I have mixed reactions. On that stretch of Independence (or any stretch before Matthews, for that matter), I would be legitimately concerned about repeatedly leaving my car outside while I watched the games, as well as the walk to and from the car. Also, the light rail/downtown location was a huge plus, but a smaller barn is better suited to minor league hockey. The cozy atmosphere will probably be more entertaining than having half of a major league arena curtained off. The rent's probably a fraction of the price, too. Wonder if that'll translate to cheaper tickets.

It might be, I've honestly never been. When I lived in Charlotte, I tended to avoid that side of town except to just pass through.

It's not a part of town where one would just randomly stroll down the street at night, but that has as much to do with the lack of any good reason to walk down those streets as it does with safety. The expansion of 74 pretty much wiped out any sense of "neighborhood" around there, so anybody just walking around is likely to be a shady character.

The arena itself is pretty much an in-and-out location. Same with Ovens next door. They're kind of isolated by the freeway so the parking attendants control who gets in and out.

All that said, the 7th St/Monroe Rd corridor is underrated, and it runs really close to the arena on the other side. If I were still there, I'd probably be looking at dinner in that neighborhood (or at South 21... omg) as a pregame option.

I worked basically right behind the Coliseum on Monroe Road around 10 years ago and never really perceived it as a particularly high crime area. More than the suburbs, sure, but seems like an overreaction. Ovens Auditorium is right there as well. There are a couple residential neighborhoods around it, businesses on Monroe Road, and then Independence Boulevard is pretty much your typical overbuilt American highway surrounded by a mixture of blight and big box stores that can't figure out if it is supposed to be a local road or a freeway.

Yeah, maybe so. I was there for about 4 years, but never made it out to a show at the Coliseum or Ovens Auditorium, so my only experiences with that section of town are from riding through. Just never had a good impression, but I never stopped long enough to find out how accurate it was.
