Lou, it's really easy to understand: when Charlie Coyle puts up career numbers in the regular season playing more minutes with better wingers than ever before those stats prove he's great. When he once again fails to produce in the playoff, like he has every single post-season but one, stats are meaningless and only morons cite them.

Hope this clears things up.

Glad I never consumed the crow that was being force fed after the regular season.

A few games into the postseason it hopped up off the plate and flew out the window.

Hope it didn’t give the people who ate it an upset stomach

There isn't any mystery with Coyle. He is a low end 2C in the NHL. The problem is come PO time when literally half the NHL goes away, you are left with matching him up against teams such as TB (Point, Stamkos\Cirelli) Toronto (Matthews\Tavares) and
Florida (Barkov, Bennett) whose Top 6C are just flat out better than him and tend to get the better of play against him.

And every roster has a weakness. If it was just Coyle’s slot you were behind the 8 ball on you can compensate elsewhere. But when you are losing the head to head battle all 60 minutes at center, that’s a tough hill.

Its extremely unlikely but I would like to see them bring in a couple of centers in
Lindholm and Stephenson to push him to 3C and Zacha to LW with DeBrusk moving on.

That would be a very expensive temporary solution that you would regret for the next 5 or so years.
They lack the center Corp to compete with Florida and you aren't fixing it with with just Lindholm, especially if DeBrusk leaves and you put Zacha in DeBrusk slot.

FLA center Corp of Barkov-Bennett-Lundell will be considerably stronger than
Lindholm (or Stephenson)-Coyle-Geekie.

If you bring in both you can slide Coyle to 3C and you have Geekie and Frederic to
step into Center roles if Lindholm, Stephenson or Coyle go down to injuries.

This isn't a terrible way to go if you can get Lindholm at 7.25 and Stephenson at 5.75.

The cap will be increasing year to year and Marchand and Coyle contracts will be ending next year and year after. So Lindholm and Stephenson contracts aren't killers.

Ranger Bruin Panther 6 game comparison.

Best team in the NHL versus Panthers
Trocheck 6 points +2
Zibanejed 2 points -3

7th best team in NHL versus Panthers
Coyle 3 points +1

If only the bruins had a true number 1 and 2 center.. The reality is Florida is friggin good and doesn't make Coyle a number 3 center.

I prefer he be a 3C with 2 centers slotted above him, who play with a bit more pace and play making ability even if the difference overall is marginal.

How did Coyle do vs the Leafs in the 7 game series where the goalie won it for them?

It’s amazing how many deficiencies get overlooked from that series due to swayman.
The Bruins top two centers scored 2 goals in 36 minutes of ice time combined per game for 13 games and somehow people still think they weren't bad. You need good defense and scoring as a top 2 player and doing only half of it doesn't cut it. there was alot of I told you so during the 82 game season, but now it's like, well he isn't a top guy. Seguin and Thornton got run out of town having garbage offensive stats in the play-offs. Standards have changed I guess

This is laughable. Coyle should never be a top center on a legit cup contender. Its not fair to him or fans that hope to win a cup in the next few years.

He's just not that good of a player

Anyone with a half a hockey brain knew they where screwed riding Coyle and Zacha as top 6 guys.

The goaltending put us in the playoffs, its the only reason we made it as far as we did. They both where historically great.

Put those two in net on any of the non playoff teams in the east and they are in.

Both those guys are 30 years old next season. Statistically, their abilities and value will diminish each year of their next contracts.

If you lack the organizational strength at the position and have to overpay in free agency in term and cap to help fill the hole, that is one thing, but to do that times 2 is cap suicide and you really handcuff yourself for the next 5 or so years.

It isn't cap suicide, stop exaggerating. Coyle had his best statistical year at 32.

Coyle filled in points wise, as did Zacha in the regular season, but their lines where constantly getting caved 5v5 as they couldn't keep up with those matchups and maintain 5v5 possession. If it wasnt a straight shadow this player and shut down kind of checking role he couldn't carry the play, did better than zacha did IMO, but Charlie is a top tier 3C through and through. He plays hard PK minutes and gets paid accordingly.
