I'm not advocating giving up the farm, but why not try to improve in the bottom 6, lower D pair and back up goalie, without giving up anything critical and reward this team with a chance to go farther than the first round? Time to take off the training wheels.
Not sure who you are looking for.
Korpi appears to be where they are going with backup G. I don't see a better backup G available without some term, getting a better backup G may only get them an extra 2-3 points the rest of the way - and that's if you assume Korpi doesn't play well. And barring injury (knock knock), no backup will see time in the net in the playoffs for CBJ.
Bottom 6? Good Lord, Saad is there right now, along with Hartnell, Anderson, Wild Bill, Gagner and Hannikaanen (until Sedlak and Calvert) get back. We don't have a bottom 6 - we have 12 forwards. The only bottom 6 pickup here would be a vet 4-C as insurance if Sedlak gets back but poops the bed in the playoffs - and even then whoever we acquire is not going to make that big of a difference.
D depth? Nuti is ok, Harrington is ok. We are at risk if someone in top 5 goes down with injury. But in my mind, a big part of the D being better is how they are slotted better (which comes from Zach and Seth bumping everyone down, and from Savard/JJ playing 1 to 1.5 levels above past performance. Shattenkirk would have been a liability compared to our top 6 during 5-on-5 play - he's a PP specialist. We already have that covered for the most part, although another cannon at the point would not hurt. But not at the expense of 1st and 2nd round picks. There is no D equivalent to any of our top 5 D-men available at TDL, and what is available is a small upgrade, of one at all, over Nutti and Harrington.
If there is a BIG splash to be made, it would be longer-term move (like Duchene). I do not see a big rental move because that is not JK's modus operandi, nor does it fit this team as constructed. I get wanting to go all in - I just like going all in with those that we went to the dance with - there is no one glaring need that is the "difference" between 1st round ouster and a long cup run - that rests on Bob for 2017, assuming that goal scoring stays spread, etc... That rests on good/great G play every year for that matter. I don't see a big move available to fill a short term need; the only big move would be a huge upgrade for now AND for the future. I am not advocating Duchene - I don't like the price now (especially at TDL) and not certain about the player. And he probably costs us Murray + Jenner + Milano +pick. Maybe that is fair value (I would argue otherwise) but that trade would gut the Jackets' room heading into the playoffs from an emotional standpoint. Duchene is not going to win them the Cup this year. A more-experienced core made up of mostly the same roster in 2018 2019 and beyond will have a much better shot at a cup - at which point Duchene or someone like him might be the difference maker. But Duchene will be cheaper this summer without risking ripping apart the comraderie that has fueled much of this year's run. Much easier to accept and adapt going into a new season, especially for the young group CBJ has.
