Well if the preseason is any indication, the Panthers are in for a bad time, but I think we all know this. The NFC South still sucks so maybe if they pull some wins out of their ass.

It very very rarely is any indication… The starters played about 11 snaps, you can’t take anything away from that. All accounts out of camp are that Bryce is the real deal which is the most important thing. There will be plenty of growing pains with a rookie QB and new coaching staff but I think this team will be by far the best they’ve been since 2017 during Cam and Luke’s prime.

The O-line in particular looked really awful. If that wasn't just rust then Bryce isn't in for a good time. We shall see.

Young and the starters only managed one first down in three drives. Looking good in practice means zilch when it comes to a game scenario, and in the game scenario they were not even remotely effective. Maybe he's the real deal, maybe he isn't, but if he is he needs a LOT of game experience and he ain't gonna get that on the bench. If they're not willing to play him in preseason he's going to be getting that experience the hard way in games that count- which means losing a lot of games that count.

And the O-Line somehow looked even worse than it's been. I don't know how that's possible, but they did it.

There was a whole lot of spin on the broadcast about young players needing game reps to learn, but that's simply not what you see with good teams. They have young players who can actually step in and play at least somewhat competently. Even the young guys on the Jets could do that, and it's not like the Jets are a great team. They wiped the floor with us. FFS, the Panthers only made it past midfield twice.

Preseason isn't everything, sure. Wins in preseason aren't worth weighing too much. But losses, and especially losses like that, you absolutely do have to take seriously.

Preseason has started up and we were talking about it in the Lounge thread, so here we are. Moving some of those posts over here.

Based on Young's individual snaps, I thought his movement and decision making looked like an NFL starter already. Each of the completions were good crisp throws, only one of them needing to be adjusted for. He was under a ton of pressure, getting hit way too often, and one of those sequences had him throwing out of the end zone.

Yes a couple of throws were overthrown, but an overthrown ball is not necessarily a bad pass:

- On the first incompletion, the receiver was being squeezed to the sideline by the CB. If Young tries to make that a catch for the receiver, it likely turns into a catch for the CB instead. Nobody else on the field was open. There was pressure developing in the pocket. Throwing it over the receiver is the best available play there.

- The second was almost identical, except Young was standing in the end zone and the WR was completely locked up with no way to make a move on the ball. There's no time for an extended check-down, and the absolute worst move is to try and lay it out there for the receiver. Just throw it to the side and move on.

To me, his decision making looked solid and he didn't seem rattled at all by the heavy physical pressure. My only concern is that sooner or later, any QB gets the yips if he's getting hit hard every third play. They've got to fix the pass protection, or commit to being a rush-heavy team this season. Protecting and developing the franchise QB needs to be the sole priority on offense this season.

The OL struggled, but again it was 11 snaps. It was the same OL group as last year minus Corbett and the OL was above average last year so I will take the sample size of a full season over 11 preseason snaps. Corbett was missing which is a big loss but he should be back within the first month of the regular season, also our highly touted rookie Zavala has been hurt and is now back so he should help fill the gap while Corbett remains out. Ickey in particular struggled a lot at LT in that game but he was phenomenal last year and has been great at camp, no reason to overreact to such a tiny sample size in preseason game 1. Also, the Jets were running complex stunts from their already elite DL, not a common preseason tactic as most teams don't like showing any of their hand and just run vanilla plays on O and D.

Young and the starters only managed one first down in three drives. Preseason is basically an extension of joint practices, there is pretty much no difference. Bryce looked good on Saturday anyways, there is no point at all in playing him with all the backups against the other team's backups, no team plays their starters that much in the preseason. 1 game, maybe Friday, we'll likely see a full half of both teams' starters which will tell us a little bit more but still very little.

Bryce looked solid despite the no-show from the offensive line. I don't think there was enough action from this outing alone that should change anyone's opinion on him yet. You saw the fast processing and quick release as advertsied on the first completion to Thielen. Went through multiple reads and got the ball out decisively while taking a shot. Also saw some anticipation throws, even on the miss to Laviska where he didn't break the route off at the depth he should have. But he shouldn't be getting many reps at outside receiver anyway. Hopefully we can see an actual sustained drive next time. I don't have concerns about his short passing game, but would like to see how he can push the ball further down the field.

I'm not too concerned about the offesnive line just yet. The unit was very solid last year while breaking in a rookie LT, finished 15th in PFF line rankings iirc. After years of terrible line play, there's continuity with Campen being retained and bringing back five legitimate NFL lineman once Corbett returns. I'll save any worrying for the actual games but I expect a better showing Friday.

Im not gonna be upset about the O line until we have starters in place. Corbett and Brady Christensen were both hurt at the very end of the year, so we arent really returning the same O line yet.

things will be rocky until the new crew gels. Hopefully Zavalla can use his familiarity with Ickey to accelerate that process for them so we can have one side of our line solid.

If we can do that it will get a lot better. Looks like Mays had a bad first game. dissapointing but im not giving up on him yet.

Please fire Michael Jordan into the sun.

I'll be honest...I hear all the good stuff they keep saying for Bryce....but I can't get Pat Whtie out of my head. If you're squeamish don't look up his Dolphins highlights (iirc it was 1 drive long)

Everyone keeps dismissing the size concerns but I think they're real. I see this as a very high risk potential high reward move from the FO. The showing from the OL would have me proceeding with caution. I would honestly start Dalton until they get their shit together.

So, Panthers got like half the yards on that drive from penalties, get to the Red Zone, then take 20 yards themselves lmao

Also, not sure who #20 was there, but he just lost himself a roster spot on that play IMO...he was barely jogging towards his man who was only 5 yards ahead of him basically walking for the catch in the endzone. Even 10% hustle there and he can probably knock that ball away or at least challenge and look like he tried. Team may be a mess right now in preseason but at least the rest of the guys look like they're trying

The thing is, what happened to White could happen to anyone. It’s a miracle it never happened to Cam, for all the times he dove into hits.

Young will be fine if he remains aware and elusive. He will take the worst of some hits that might not bother a bigger QB, but devastating hits aren’t typically a function of size.

Crazy thing about Cam is it wasn't the endless headshots that did him in, it was a shoulder injury on Thursday night.

I will forever demand Thursday games only include teams off bi-weeks because of this

So a late Panthers touchdown gets instead called a forward fumble into the endzone touchback turnover to Detroit? lmao

They traded a haul for a QB that can be compared only to 9-10 other cases. The best of the QBs that belong to the group are… Jared Goff and Michael Vick.

Regular season is here, and they're playing half decent but sloppy football. And they are playing against the Falcons, who are playing sloppy but half decent football.

Hey, it's at least an entertaining game and Young looks good. Some very bad rookie mistakes with the fumble and the interception, but he is a rookie.

Yepp rookie stuff but solid adversity recovery for a rookie debut. I like what I see. Will watch again.
