MOD NOTE: Trolling, Baiting and Flaming other users, fanbases, cities will NOT be tolerated. Report and do not engage any posts which you believe do this. You will be warned, thread banned or forum banned as necessary.

nah, if a mid-first round pick had scored 110 goals in 220 games, and gone over point per game, everyone here would be [MOD] over him, even with missing FOURTEEN whole games last year, and 20 the year before.
As they would be for a guy who produced more, has a history of durability and is considerably cheaper. The only thing that would influence that opinion is the pre draft pedigree of a #1 overall or the emotional bond to a player or team which negates analyzing it logically.

This is the kind of thing that should get Bergevin kicked out but after saying that like ten times I've kinda given up on it happening.

Unless we miss the playoffs again but ugh

trying to land a real 1C that ultimately hurt and opponent and cost us nothing, is what should get you kicked out ?

its a real shame we didnt drop 50 million for 7 years of anders lee. A crying shame.

Canes got their franchise C for 5 years instead of 8, he's 100% gone in 5 years (Huge negative for Canes) to FA in what is likely going to be a another huge payday. Well played by Aho.

That’s fine. Guys can go UFA in 7 seasons and Canes got Aho for 8 prime years (3 ELC + 4 RFA+ 1UFA). Would have liked to have him longer, but if he walks, he’s earned that right so more power to him.

8 fabulous years from a 2nd round pick is fine by me. We lost Skinner after 8 years and are no worse for wear.

At the busiest time of year for GMs, you honestly believe a GM would only have one deal he's working on at a time?

Summer just started. There will be more announcements. One OS attempt is meaningless esp. when they are mostly doomed to fail.

No what im saying is that he didnt make the OS instead of signing other players that wanted to come here.
So its not like he shot himself in the foot making the OS and waiting.
Still has plenty of cap space to make any other deals he might need to make

I actually do agree with all that. Just understand that we spent 24 hours (and everyone expected it to last a lot longer) feeling like the very core of our franchise was under fire by Bergevin, the media, and the lunatic fringe of NHL fans. With it turning around so decisively today, there's a certain amount of wanting to spike the football.
relax, I am sure the players will get a chance to do that after the next " im a little teapot"

because he will be a ufa and the canes will have to compete with everybody to pay him as opposed to pay what they want ( or what the habs wanted to pay him) because theu owned his rights.

you see, when a resource is scarce ( a proven young NHL 1C) and demand is high ( pretty much every team in the league not capped) the prices go UP. I know it doesn't seem to make sense, but its TRUE!
this doesnt preculde the canes from being in on him, but other things might.

The fact that they will need to compete to pay for him doesn't make him "gone" any more than a normal UFA. If we are in a position where we desperately need him, we will find a way to pay for him just like the Isles did with Lee.

to be fair, this all goes back a lot further than 24 hours when it comes to the history of Carolina and the fans and media of the Quebec region

First post ever... I have to say as a habs fan I feel my ticket money is already paying for Aho’s salary as per revenue sharing; maybe that’s part of it. That being said I am not bitter, found this entertaining, and am happy Carolina is on it’s way to making money some day. Congrats on keeping Aho and I hope the buzz keeps up for them!

No one's really getting hurt by this. Carolina gets certainty over the next 5 years and avoids a prolonged negotiation and the Habs provided a bit of a sideshow, which had one owner breaking ranks. I'm sure the owners are going to use this to say that they're not colluding -- which is probably what the players will try and set up at the next CBA bargaining.

Really? When?
Well, not officially, but might as well be. The owner has publicly stated they’re matching. Capfriendly has Aho signed with the Canes. TSN has a story about them planning to match.
It’s as close to a done deal as it gets without actually being done...yet

The only reason we're not matching is to delay it to needle Montreal a little more. And to prevent them from putting out another OS to someone else until we decide they can.

you are not getting him at the equivalent of 7X7 in 5 years. You are right, the canes could compete with teams that are far better finacially heeled than they are to get a monster deal in 5 years. if you think tyou are getting a hometown discount, you didnt get one this time.

Of course they are. Saying thanks to MTL for doing their work for them. Seriously, a front loaded contract isn't enough to make a team walk away from a #1 Center no matter how cheap the owner is. This was a wast of time and did nothing more than make MTL a target for retaliation when the time is right.

why would the canes care if the habs OS another RFA?? That makes no sense.

Agree. However, it won't stop the possibility to negotiate with them during that time. RFA Players that an OS is coming in the next few weeks, he might want to delay the negociation with his team.

Love that quote from Dundon. This is what fledgling teams need: Owners with deep pockets, a commitment to the team, and some balls.

Maybe he could have shown all of that before getting to the point of leaving the door wide open for someone to offer sheet.

Let's all give him credit for his after the fact balls on a captain obvious decision.
