Looking over the cap situation and trying to maximize the cap while going on LTIR:

If I use of the guys we know will be on the roster due to one way contracts and not wanting to lose them on waivers / cant waive them:

Aho, Turbo, Svech, Necas, Kase, Statsny, Staal, Martinook, Koko, Fast, Slavin, Burns, Skjei, Pesce, Andersen, Raanta, Gardiner (cant waive) and Patches (cant waive) we have a cap hit of 79,635,250.

The goal is to get as close to 82500000 as possible because we dont gain unused space. We lost 580k last year for reference. If we include Bear and waive Chatfield, Pederson, and Coghlan we would have 664k left, which would lose because that is lower than the league minimum.

Now if we were able to trade Bear and not waive Chatfield and Coghlan (Pederson can go), we would have a cap space of 1,339,750. Which we could give to Cdh making our cap space 0. We could then sign Stepan to a deal and bring up Drury and Jarvis after day 1 to use up some of Gardiner's LTIR money while minimizing the chances of losing Chatfield or Coghlan to waivers . We would then have 1.33 million of unused space for a depth trade later.

Right now, we run out of roster spots before we run out of cap..

You have to base the cap total off 23 man roster...

so if we include all the regular 1 way deals plus the expected near certain lock 2 way deal players, we have 22 roster spots filled and $1,380,583.00 cap space left to sign deHaan and/or Stepan...

Going in order from highest salary to lowest, forwards are:

Aho, Svech, Patches (not putting on LTIR and leaving fully counting against cap), Staal, TT, JK, Necas, Fast, Martinook, Kase, Stastny, Drury, and Jarvis

Totaling $51,049,417.00

Defense:

Slavin, Burns, Skjei, Pesce, Bear, Coghlan, and Chatfield

Totalling $23,580,000.00

Or you risk waivers for say someone like Chatfield and that frees $762,500 more to combine together to sign both deHaan and Stepan to whatever combo $2,133,083.00 gives you....

You can open a roster spot and use patches spot after opening day until patches comes back... but we have to expose someone to waivers then if everyone healthy as we would have 24 at that point..

So after the CDH signing we have 583,083. If we sent Pederson down (750k) and signed Stepan he could make up to 1,333,083 and we would be compliant.

Then after the season starts, you trade Bear and you have already set your season cap (at least I think thats how this works).

Meaningless now, but that Anttoni Honka performance bonus is obviously of the Games Played variety. Judging by its sub $25k sum, I hazard to guess it would have been payable upon 5 games played. Now why Honka has such a sillily micromanaged contract with minuscle tweaks in signing bonuses etc., is anyone's guess.

Is Staal gonna sign back in Carolina?

Nobody really knows at this point. Talks were reportedly close early in the season, then we've heard nothing since. Canes are notoriously a tight bargaining team with older UFAs and staff as well, so I could see negotiations going south quickly. On the other hand, Rod loves Jordo, so he has someone on management that will lobby for him getting signed.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't discount the possibility that all three of Jordan, Eric, and Marc trying to find a team that would take all three next year. Probably never an opportunity to do that again. And given the way Kotkaniemi has played in a checking role for the team, the team may not bid high enough to make Jordan change his mind if he is considering such a possibility.

we have 450k of bonuses carrying over for next year.
Jarvis:
- $212.5k for being top-6 forward in ToI (3rd in cumulated behind Necas and Aho, 6th in ToI/GP behind Aho Necas Svech Turbo Staal), and
- $212.5k for being top-3 forward in +/- (3rd at +10 behind Turbo and Noesen, tied with Kotkaniemi)

And if I'm not mistaken, Kochetkov's $82.5k is a Games Played bonus, which he unlocked by playing in 10+ games (25).
