hey there, sorry if this question has been asked already, but i couldnt find the answer anywhere

what are the penalties for going over the cap? ive heard rumors that the NHL has lots of options, such as removing draft picks, not allowing players to play etc but ive never seen anything concrete.... does anybody know what the penalties are and which penalties are used in which circumstances?

    thanks for any help

It is impossible for a team to blatantly go over the cap - the league will just refuse to approve any SPC that puts a team over the cap,

In the more grey areas of circumvention, including getting below the regular season cap on opening day (the offseason cap is 110%) the league has a bunch of penalties available:

Is it really impossible for a team to go over the cap? Yes, that's true after the season begins... but what about teams that legally went 'over' the cap during the summer and then somehow couldn't bring their contracts back into compliance before the start of the regular season? (like what some people thought would happen to the Devils last year) what does the league do then?

Makes them get into compliance with the, "either get into compliance or you'll start forfeiting games" card.
