We hear that a lot of teams are looking to dramatically slash payroll this year, and how this may have incredible impacts on player value, but something that hasn't really been talked about is how this work has already been done for a good chunk of the teams...

When you look at the top 400 contracts in the NHL (by cap hit), the total cap hit value is $1.937 billion. Their total money owed this year is just $1.79b -- a difference of $147m.

This an average of $370k PER PLAYER in the top 400, or an average of $4.75m per team -- that they will spend less than cap hit. When you look at Jonas Brodin's deal where it's mid-structured to avoid the high escrow, I think it's likely that we'll see this number grow.

You can then take an outlier team like Toronto -- who's money-out exceeds the cap hit by $12m, which causes the average to grow to $5.15m per team.

This should in theory help an economic recovery as well.
