Hmmm 1 year...wouldn't it need to be 2 years for him to be the goalie exposed in the expansion draft?

He already was signed for 2016-2017. The extension takes him through 2017-2018. This allows the Canucks to expose him to the expansion draft, since the exposed goalie needed to be signed to a contract.

That's correct.

Vegas can't have Markstrom. Hallelujah.

Well.. there's our expansion eligible goalie. That's done.

So glad he was willing to stay knowing Demko is here. Bet his AHL salary is at least a juicy one... for his sake.. Solid solider.

Fair point but it's probably not a bad situation for him, as a depth goaltender, to be guaranteed work (and money!) at the pro level for two years. As in a lot of these farmhand goalies don't always have the easiest time finding work

Nice to evidently have the expansion goalie requirement met

I was actually a little afraid that the management team would forget they need to sign another goalie for the expansion draft lol.

Thankfully they figured it out.

Half a million to play in the AHL sounds like an amazing life. And a successful pro hockey career even if it's not the big leagues.

hard to get the details. Was one a 2 way deal and this one an automatic one way deal. Can easily understand this as his best payday.

Cap friendly listed his salary as $550,000 in both the AHL and NHL for both last season and this as well. The new extension lists $650,000 NHL and $425,000 AHL.

So conflicting information?

Markstrom made $1,400,000 in his single season in Utica on a one way. That was correct.

We knew that here in Utica (575K). The interesting part of this contract extension is that he took a $125,000 pay cut.

Yeah, that's kind of ... weird. It's easy to see why the Canucks needed to do this; I'm not so sure what his incentive is. Maybe he's hoping Las Vegas picks him up and he has an OK shot at sticking as their backup goalie in their first year. :dunno:

He'll be exposed in next spring's expansion draft, but doubt he gets claimed...will be riding shotgun with Demko in Utica for the next couple of years.

Any guesses where Garteig fits into the Canucks plans?

Hope he turns into a tradeable asset.

He gets an oportunity to start and showcase himself in the E.
Onus is on him to perform and move up the ranks.
To me it seems more as a temporary organizational depth move for the Canucks to shore up the system and then cut him loose when he hits UFA.

Best case scenario is he flourishes, replaces Bachman after a season or 2, gets a cup of coffee, looks decent, and garners a trade offer from a team in need in 2 yrs.
If Demko is tracking well, G is traded.. if not we may hold on to him and bringing up to backup Markstrom...

Lots of ways it could go.
Hard to say... so fluid season to season.

It's up to him.
