Bring Phil in on a min deal. Good guy to have for a playoff run. He's been through it all.

I'm down with Kessel closer to the deadline when the rosters expand. Don't like him over any of the other depth options on the roster or in the AHL.

We do need to replace a bit of Kuzmenko’s room presence. Kessel would probably be worth it for his cup experience and jokes alone

Something to keep in mind, acquiring Tanev (50% retained) isn't possible unless the Canucks either

1. Free up cap space with an additional trade
2. Put Soucy on LTIR for remainder of the season (unlikely given the injury and initial return timetable)
3. Only keep 22 players on roster (one spare F and D, or no spare F and two D)

Without any of the above, assuming they have a 13th forward making 775k (either PDG or Kessel) and Friedman is the odd man out on D, the most they can spend on a defenseman is $1.86M with no retention, or up to $3.72M (in full season salary) with 50% retained.

kessel with garland and joshua could be interesting. joshua was actually a centre.

Kessel has absolutely zero business being on any legit contender's third line at this stage of his career. There's a reason he barely played for Vegas last year. As a depth option on the fourth line? Sure. Would rather use that money elsewhere but I don't hate it either.

I would love to get Carrier and Trenin from Nashville. Would also see if you could pry Joseph out of Ottawa. Without removing someone from the roster and LTIRing Soucy, Canucks would have around 4.35m in cap space. Carrier and Trenin cost 4.2m total. Joseph and Carrier (at 50%) also would be at 4.2m

Can play Joseph with Miller & Boeser, shift Suter to centre Hoglander & Lafferty. Carrier replaces Juulsen as Zadorov's regular partner and gives you a bunch of depth. Trenin doesn't fit a specific need other than being a good bottom-6 grinder. Having a worse season offensively so shouldn't cost much.

-Canucks still talk and discuss Kessel; keep in regular contact with his agent
-Tocchet said that "there's value in Phil, I think he could still play, 100%"
-biggest issue is conditioning
-Kessel decision is not far away
-Canucks are poking around Phil Kessel
-Kessel could be the guy driving the interest
-doesn't think the Canucks are going after another big name; not interested in trading another 1st round pick
-Flames think they can eventually get a 1st rounder for Tanev
-Canucks are not in on Vatrano, makes too much money at 3.6m

raises the question of who pays for the retention when a player is not worth his salary. he's down to circa 16 minutes a game and they're a capped out playoff team looking to move him so they can add. what's the market value of risto even at $3.5m for 3 years from a motivated seller?

otoh, if foote can do for risto what he did for myers the canucks defence would be biggest and most violent in the league behind the top pair.

Ristolainen has 1g 3a in 30 games and is -6 this season. Averaging only about 16.5 minutes a game and doesn't penalty kill. And he has been terrible for several years before that. He's signed for 3 more seasons at 5.1m and Flyers are already using one retention slot on Hayes for the next two seasons.

The Flyers think they can get a 1st round pick for this?
