how much you think he gets paid to call the devils?
I'm not even sure how to guess, but I doubt it's 7 figures a year.

Maybe half a million?

I'd imagine his salary to call the Devils is higher than his salary to call the Red Bulls, as there's more games per year/more travel in hockey than in soccer and I'm pretty sure the salaries for calling hockey is probably more than MLS soccer. I did see a stat about 10 years ago that the MLS has surpassed the NHL as the fourth most watched sport in America, but I find that hard to believe.

It’s not from 10 years ago but there was a survey last year showing that more people watch soccer than hockey; which I can believe.

“In surveys of US sports fans, soccer is now more popular than ice hockey in the US. A study conducted by the research firm, Ampere Analysis, last month, reveals 49 per cent of US Sport fans claim to like watching soccer on TV, ahead of ice hockey on 37 per cent.”

I like watching both and think they have a fair amount in common when it comes to strategies and such.

So that's all soccer combined and not just MLS?

I think the article I remember about the NHL vs. MLS is that the NHL was still on the whole more popular, but MLS was starting to draw more fans per game, largely thanks to larger venues opening up across the league. But yeah, combine MLS with the Premiership and other leagues and said leagues getting greater and greater visibility and I can see their popularity going up a good deal as a whole.

I have been hearing about the growth of soccer in the US since I was a kid rooting for the Cosmos and playing on my youth team. Sure, it's cool and hip with the kids these days to watch F1 and EPL but I'm not sure it will translate much beyond that.

Yeah I heard the same thing all the time growing up, I played a ton of soccer up till high school but then hockey took things over for me, pretty much quit soccer after that.

I used to watch the Cosmos all the time. I saw Pele's last game at Giants Stadium when I was a little kid, that was freaking awesome, place was bonkers from what I can remember.

Even if hockey fell past soccer it doesn’t mean much football is king basketball sucks baseball is meh and then you have hockey. If people are bored with baseball I can’t imagine them being fans of soccer

I'm bored with baseball and a fan of soccer. Gameplay is constant in soccer (Moreso than hockey and basketball, for sure). Baseball is sit, wait, pitch, sit wait, another pitch.

The best thing about baseball is seeing it live while you're drunk with your buddies, and preferably a minor league game. The Brooklyn Cyclones do "BaseBALL You Can Drink" games where they have a 2 hour open bar before the game, a hot dog or burger, and a ticket to the game for $40. It's incredible. It was also Star Wars Night the last time I went so there were lightsaber battles in between innings and stuff. Minor league baseball is awesome.

Minor league baseball is the best. Up my way, the Hartford Yard Goats have some wacky stuff going on too, starting with the fact that the team's name is the f***ing Yard Goats because they let the internet name the team.

There are some interesting announcers working in minor league baseball too. I'd love it if they replaced Cangy on our broadcast with one of those colorful characters, but they probably won't.

I’m a soccer/EPL fan and even I’ll admit the game is largely boring compared to American sports. It will grow to an extent, but the upside is still limited.

MLS has grown so much since the days of me being a season ticket holder sitting in shitty old giants stadium watching soccer being played on ugly football field lines. The amount of soccer specific stadiums built in this country in the last decade or so of MLS has shown the growth of the game. I've been to numerous road games that have had way bigger crowds than the Devils.

Last year alone Cincinnati, Columbus and Austin all had their own 20k+ capacity stadiums open. Nashville just opened a 30k capacity stadium. St. Louis and Miami have their own stadiums coming in the next few years. The vast majority of the league is playing in their own stadiums these days. Atlanta plays where the Falcons play but was drawing crowds up to 70k at one point.

Seattle plays where the Seahawks play but they just had like 65k when they won concacaf champions league a few weeks ago.

Sure the MLS isn't the EPL or La Liga or the Bundesliga but the talent gets better every year. The more and more the league grows the more the league will eventually will be a top tier league. If players around the world can make a lot of money and provide a nice place for their families to live more and more will be coming to MLS.

It's unfortunate that a lot of people would still rather watch whatever European or other league on TV instead of supporting their local team. The more and more people support their local teams the quicker the league will rise up and take a bigger role in the world.

With the world cup coming to the US in a few years that should really be able to grab some great momentum for the league as a hole.

It will probably be either one of the two that did all women's radio broadcast. Kelly Schultz or Erica Ayala.

I'd actually be fine with Kelly. She actually has a background in this stuff and calls hockey games on the collegiate level. She's hardly 'underseasoned' as it were.

But we could just promote Erika and tickle all those boxes and have it still be familiar.
I'd like to see Erika (Wachter) get the chance. Isn't she doing what Cangi did before he did PBP? I'm pretty sure she's done all the schooling, internships, etc, for broadcasting. (aka Paid her dues). I started on that route so many moons ago... I decided not to fully pursue it though. Very tough business because of lack of actual jobs. There's a lot more now though, though one could argue harder to make an actual living. It was 30 years ago when I started taking those communications classes (college).

It's really hard for it to take off, most likely having to do with the lack of scoring. Basketball and Football have such a big presence in college sports, whereas Baseball is of course the "national pastime". Hockey, well, it's just the best sport of them all. Soccer will never overtake these anytime soon. Maybe in several decades, but not likely.

I think having our best players go to Europe instead of playing MLS doesn’t help. If a US national team culled from the MLS went far in a World Cup run maybe thr US would pay attention. My kids all grew up playing soccer but they all moved on to other sports that they found more fun.

If they hire a Female broadcaster to do Play-By-Play, I'm sure she can't be any worse than Leah "Tommy Novak" Hextall.

That woman set back Women broadcasters 20 years with how garbage she is.

Someone mentioned Sherry Ross and I'd be all for it.

Others say Erika and I'd be down but as it was pointed out she doesn't have the background for it, though.

In the end, I think they might go with Don La Greca (just an assumption) in the end, though....(though I wouldn't be surprised if they were just too lazy to do any actual searching and just threw Matt Laughlin out there instead)
