Just because your history with drugs has dented your ability to retain memory doesn't mean he was invisible.

Three assists in 10 games and stood up for teammate. Not nothing.
2 of the assists were in the first callup.

And don't get me wrong, I'd MUCH rather have 21yo a rookie defenseman not be noticeable then be noticeable, especially when they're not an offensive dman. It means they're doing their job.

Didn't McKeown kind of have a pretty strong season in Charlotte this past year and take a pretty positive step, after struggling his 1st year? He may still end up being a career AHLr, but I thought what I had read was he had a very strong season, or am I mistaken?

He had a decent season in Charlotte, but we’re talking about a scenario where he goes directly into a top-6 spot in the NHL. That seems like a pretty large leap for a guy who still seems like an AHL’er to me at this point.

Reminds me of when Bobby Sanguinetti had a nice little season in Charlotte, so we gave him a roster spot the following season and destroyed him.

Oh I'm not arguing that McKeown is ready for the NHL, I was just commenting that I thought he HAD taken a significant step forward in his play from year 1 to year 2 in the AHL.

I don't watch the Checkers much so can't say what he does or does not look like and was only referencing what I read about him.

I only see them occasionally, so limited viewing disclaimer here. I think he’s at a point where the best thing for him would be to start in Charlotte with an understanding that there will be a callup opportunity in the foreseeable future as injuries set in. Would rather he start from a positive AHL environment, make that trip to Raleigh mid-season, and join the Canes in a low key/low expectations context. That gives us the luxury to evaluate him and decide whether he can use more development time without shaming him back down to the A.

I’ve always liked McKeown as a prospect. No reason he shouldn’t be a useful NHL player for us eventually, he has all the tools and presumably is building his toolbox. Crazy that he’s still only 22, seems like he was drafted forever ago.

I think he most likely does start in Charlotte. As it stands right now, they have 4 NHL level RHD on the roster. Even if Faulk gets moved, there are 3.
Yep, and if he doesn't have to clear waivers it's far better to have him getting ice time in Charlotte then riding the pine in the NHL at this point still.

McKeown almost made the team out of camp last year didn’t he? Or was that the year before....I’m getting old.

Either way he’s been on the radar for awhile now and has looked good when he’s gotten the chance. It wouldn’t be that shocking for him to be in the mix to stay up with us.

I’m not sure about year before, but last season he was sent down in the second round of cuts when they had to get to 33. Other than actual Canes, the guys who stayed after him were Bean, Carrick, and Chelios.

Considering he had another solid year of development, I’d expect him to play the whole camp with us this time. Along with Bean and somebody else in addition to the real Canes.

If I recall that right he almost took the spot from Nakladal outright and gave them reason to think they didn’t need that signing in the first place. He had a very good camp and John and Tripp mentioned at the time he almost stayed with the team back then.

He’s been on the radar since, IMO. I think they were just giving him time. He’s a potential TVR replacement for sure.
