He'll be UFA next summer when his contract expires. Maybe they want to show him that the road to the N is not blocked in the organization.

Because it's more important for the Checkers to win than for the Canes to win right now. Simple as that.

Only being slightly more serious, Saarela and Gauthier get more playing time in Charlotte, which isn't just better for the Checkers....it's better for their development....although I'd be hard pressed not to think that Saarla won't get a few games up here this year. He's one of the more likely candidates to bolt across the pond if he isn't shown a little love.

Saarela got on his contract a $157.500 Games Played bonus for this season. If he gets more than ten it's plenty of love.

He would probably be motivated to be loved when brought up.

Contract ends in 2020, so there also may be a rush to bolt across the Atlantic at that time.
