How are you guys liking Ferland? I've long considered him underrated - glad he's getting a chance on the top line. He was great in that role with Carolina.
Loving him so far. He is a legit complimentary player to true skill guys, but the whole "JG and SM are just bouncing pucks in off him, he'll never score away from them" clearly weren't watching the guy play. He keeps it pretty simple but he knows how to pull up and hit trailers, he knows how to get open for the skill guys and has a great quick release when they do hit him. He's smart, he knows how to take advantage of the players he's with. Not a direct comparison but he's got a lot of Verbeek in him in terms of his approach to playing with skill guys. He's a quick skater and the work ethic is obvious. He was very under rated but I felt that way before he played a game here. Two games isn't enough to hang everything on but I've been saying if we wanted "culture change" the way we said we did, this guy was the key to the trade as he brings all those things we lacked. Fox is a good prospect and Dougie is a stud but this is a tough to replace glue guy to me. I've been vocal about really wanting him back next year.

Necas is going to be a project this year imo, he's clearly trying to figure out how to do Necas things in an NHL game. As weird as it sounds he's too fast at times, blows past the play. The talent is obvious but that line doesnt look dangerous despite three dangerous players being on it.

I think Rod's biggest challenge is going to be how to arrange all these talented pieces. That hasn't been a concern in quite some time. I agree, Necas is good, but he'll have to learn how to harness that energy, and will require some mentoring. How will RB catch this lightning in a bottle.

Socks is the greatest poster we have ever had. Thank you Socks. We are not worthy.

I watched the condensed game but not the real game. From the 8 minutes I saw, it didn't look like we got outplayed, which is what I figured after reading about how good McElhinney was. Was it indeed an even game?

Also, kudos to the fine dude who quoth "The McBackup has become the McStarter." If any of you are monster factory fans, that reminded me of "the tossboy has become the tossman."

I was honestly really hoping that what I perceived was quite a bit of weight loss was going to help Faulk with his skating/speed. Doesn't seem to have transitioned. Still think his decision making is horrible.
I don't think he looks that bad myself. He doesn't look good either. He's sort of just there at this point.

Kinda like he has one foot in and one foot out the door or something. It's a weird dynamic at play, especially with him wearing A.

Feeling like they always beat us in Raleigh, don't know why.
It's even worse at MSG, last win there was 2010. I hate that arena.

Kinda stopped watching the team in the second half last season. Team looked totally different to me last night. Once they got the lead there wasn’t a nervous, “oh shit better not mess this up” energy. It was a “we want more/we want to win” type energy. Diggin what I’ve seen so far. Might even pony up the money tomorrow to go to my first regular season game in a solid 5 years.

From the isle game, I thought his skating looked tremendously improved. Still making dumb dzone decisions with the puck, but his recovery has....recovered.

I wouldn't trade him in a futures deal atm. Center or massive upgrade at winger (Saad). I like having a defense good enough and deep enough hcrb'a can focus on not overworking anyone.

I agree. I think both him and his agent, as well as the team, are pretty sure he’s an $8M+ per year player at this point. So why rush it as a team in case he falters and then you overpaid him. If he does as everyone expects, then it is an easy signing and everyone is happy with at the end of the season.

The opportunity to get a bargain left the station a while ago, so being patient is the best option now.

I can see the discussion.

Waddell: "Hey Gerry, we were thinking it was best to get this contract thing out of the way so it's not a distraction for the team. You up for that?"
Johannson: "Sounds good Don, what do you have in mind?"
Waddell: "Well, looking at some comparable players, the closest is probably Nick Ehlers who signed for $6M a year for 7 years. Now, with the cap going up and inflation, we were thinking $6.75M / year for 7 years."
Johannson: "Now Don, we both know how highly you guys think of Sebastian. Plus, he's now playing center and is much more than a 60 point player. If you want to lock him up now, it's going to cost you more than that. I'm confident he'll be a 75+ point player as soon as this season."
Waddell: "C'mon Gerry. How about a little hometown discount? We got a good thing going here and with Sebastian, Necas and Svechnicov along with our defense, this team could be good for a long time.
Johannson: "Hometown discount? You have the lowest payroll in the NHL. How about you get that billionaire owner to pry open that wallet for a guy he called untouchable and his best player?"
Waddell: "Uh, I'll see what I can do."
Johannson: "No hurry Don. I'm sure you'll see it my way very soon. If not, we'll wait."

There is a real cost of living discount that comes with Carolina. Making 8 million in Carolina is a lot more than making 8 million in New York or DC. I assume that gets factored in, and why Carolina sometimes gets players signed for less than market value.

We haven't seen it that much though. E. Staal, Ward, Williams, Skinner, J. Staal, Darling, Rask, etc...didn't take discounts. Maybe Slavin and Pesce, but it's more the exception than the norm IMO.

They're are also doing us a favor signing in a small market that hasn't been to the playoffs in 9 seasons. I can see why they wouldn't want to take a discount.

Aw shucks. I like you too.

You guys are fun. I enjoy fun.

And the Canes seem like a promising team this year. And you have McBackup, who I always liked.

This could be the beginnings of a beautiful friendship.

Yeah, there are times when his legs are going faster than his brain, at least on offense. Defensively you couldn't ask for anything better from a 19 year old rookie who made that leap.

I didn’t get the middle 1/3rd of the game and was kind of in and out of the rest, but from everything I saw we solidly deserved to win. It was similar to the Islanders game, forwards swarming and defensemen cleaning up. McElhinney didn’t steal this game the way Greiss stole the NYI game. He made a couple of big saves when we really needed them, which is something almost every other team gets from their goaltender and we haven’t had in a very long time.

I think it’s fair to say after 2 games, this should not be a cellar-dwelling team. We looked significantly better than the Isles and Jackets. How we stack up against the top end competition is yet to be determined, but it’s nice to not look like we’re hanging on by the skin of our teeth in these ones of games.

Also I think there’s a decent chance we found our goalie. At this point I wouldn’t even blink to keep McE over Mrazek, and with Darling being what he is, I’d rather have him on the bench trying to earn the starting job back than have him on the ice trying to lose it.

I don't get the whole send Mrazek to the AHL immediately when Darling gets back. Mrazek definitely held his own on opening night, not spectacular, but good enough. Darling played well in preseason, but haven't we seen a whole year on how he is? May be hes changed, may not but rigjt now he's injured, send him to the AHL when healhy and use it as a conditioning stint. It is very unlikely someone will claim Darling, but I think someone will claim Mrazek.

I was at the game last night. Couple things I noticed.

Foegele is great away from the puck and on the forecheck. His speed is a great asset combined with his size down low makes for a good possession/cycle guy.

Ferland was a nice surprise. He has that pesky play style, but he also has the smarts to know where to be away from the play, to read and put himself in the right spot to receive passes from a super skilled guy in Aho.

Svechnikov was much more comfortable than Necas. Necas can turn on the jets and it's awesome to see him move but he's still trying to figure things out. I think as he gets used to the NHL he'll be dangerous with that speed and playmaking ability.

Mac was what good Mac looks like. Consistency has always been his downfall it seems, but when he's on, he can play well and make some impressive saves. His flexibility on a couple saves last night made me feel like I pulled my own groin.

DeHaan has really good instincts anticipating plays and getting up ice, but it's clear to see why he's a defense first guy. If he had more offensive skill he would be a monster.
