Canadiens tickets sellout streak

In a recent interview to RDS (French), Canadiens owner Jeff Molson was asked about unsold tickets including side-by-side just hours before puck drop, including season opener vs Leafs. In his response, Molson states there is a general trend to sell more and more tickets at the last minute. He also later states that tickets are selling at the same pace as in the past years - a bit of a contradictory statement.

Is this being reported as well in similar markets? I wonder why fans would wait until the last minute to secure seats to an event that is always sold out. To my knowledge there is no dynamic pricing the day of the game which would make this a more interesting deal.

Habs currently have a 540+ game sellout streak.

Yeah, I dunno about the streak...I remember back when Pierre Guathier was GM for Habs and the Habs in tank mode, many nights thousands of empty seats...Oh yeah sure they were all sold..umhmm

Will be interesting to watch Oct 24th in Montreal vs Florida...lol
I'm betting on TONS of empty seats.....

There was even empty seats when they Habs played in Montreal vs. Toronto..that was before losing the 3 out west.....That's never the case, so it's a big sign of what is coming

You're 1-6-1 on Oct 24 a Tuesday night in Montreal vs Flordia..lol yeah ticket demand will be real strong

I actually watched the interview and not just read the article which omitted Molson explanation. Molson says secondary markets are the cause. Perhaps this makes sense if people are waiting until the end to snap below face value tickets. Right now stub has several tickets for Tuesday including a pair in White for around 97USD or ~125CDN all fees in well below official price of 197CDN all fees in. Will be interesting to see if below face value will remain hours before puck drop.

The Canadiens should be fine for selling tickets but if any team have trouble selling tickets reduce prices on games. Make it affordable for a family to go. We tried to go to a game in Edmonton last Christmas. Tickets were $275 each. That's not affordable especially when you can watch the game at home.

Would be nice but not very realistic. You will make those who paid full price unhappy. More people will be waiting until the end in hopes of scoring cheaper tickets making attendance or more important # of tickets actually sold less predictable.

I'd be a bit caution about kijiji as risks of fraud are a lot higher than a site guarantying tickets which some do.

The simple fact you see ads for a Habs vs Leaf game with such huge discounts in prices, then
when you actually watch the game and seen many empty seats in the lower bowl..that says it all.

If they wanna deny the streak didn't end years ago, well this year is gonna be hard to deny it...Fans are fed up, just like when Molson had to write a letter to the fans before he hired Bergevin..lol
The frustration level within the fan based is back to the same level when he had to step in and fire Pierre Gauthier...Was lots of empty seats.....

That supposes that the ticket is already sold which then makes Molson/Habs lose no revenue (or very little from concessions) which would also means the sellout streak is still active, because buts in seats =/= tickets sold.

So, in other words...the discussion is moot because if there is 21273 seats in Centre Bell, and they are all sold by Habs, it doesn't matter that 10000 of those tickets are left unused because people couldn't make it/the scalper didn't sell it. Of course someone is loosing money, but it's not the team...which is all the league cares about anyway.

Good post, informative and consistent with what I have read LeHab.

My son has been attending Sabres games for the last couple years, and spending as little as $9 per seat. If I was a season ticket holder I wouldn't be too pleased to be paying double what he pays, if not more.

He's not getting tickets for Toronto, Montreal, and a couple other teams, but most teams, especially if the games aren't weekend games.

You can always "sell-out" a game by giving away tickets. However, many people who got free tickets that don't want to goto the game will just dump them on the secondary market at low prices.

The statistic I would like to see is ticket revenue per game.

Secondary market is a better indication of true supply-demand. Perhaps a team can sellout now but if prices on secondary market consistently go below face value, some consumers will eventually catch on and go more with secondary market. Why pay more when you can pay less?

A pair of White can be had now for 92USD (all fees in) on stub for the game today while the face value is 197CDN where tickets are still available

My point is Habs had a 10000+ 5years+ waiting list for season tickets. As long as that waiting list still exists, the team won't care. Because as soon as you let go off your seats, someone else in line will happily jump to take them.

As the ticket prices continue to rocket up, the waiting list gets smaller....IMHO
Over the last 5-7 years tickets have gone up a lot.Taken people off the list.

If the Habs do decide to go full scale Vancouver rebuild, well we already got season ticket holders this year in Montreal trying to sell tickets for 50% off the face value....Imagine 3-4 years of pain....lol

Vancouver had a 6000+ waiting.list years ago.....Look at them now...lol
Tryin to sell "mini" season ticket packages during the season with an empty rink.

As long as a team is sold out based on it's primary season ticket holders and as long as it has a waiting list that will fill any season ticket holder drop-offs... then the secondary market means nothing.

Tickets on StubHub for $29each for 2 seats.

Lower bowl for $85 each for a pair lol.

$85 each... add the standard $15-20 in processing fees... that's pushing $200 for a couple to go to a hockey game. Not counting parking, food, anything. Just walking through the door. To see the last-place team in the league play the 3-4-1 Florida Panthers, in a game where Vincent Trocheck is the top statistical player involved.

Is this supposed to be "lol" level low pricing?

Meanwhile, Montrealers can see Jay-Z or Lady Gaga in concert for about half that...

Absolutely lol low level pricing.

I don't think you know the ticket market in Toronto, Montreal, or NYR very well.

If the team was even semi competitive, they'd instantly be double the price.
