sabres fan here. we totally fleeced the nucks in this trade. stillman is a bonafide fringe nhl defensemen. he got punched in the head in his first fight in buffalo and had to miss a bunch of games. meanwhile bloom still isn’t even in the NHL!! what kind of a name is josh???? lmao pick a better name next time (parents)
Quit joshin, hes just a late bloomer

Ah yes, fans of two Stanley cup-less expansion siblings fighting about which team fleeced each other over a middling prospect and a middling depth defenseman.
Watch out, we have a fan from the least successful O6 team throwing shade

Buffalos prospect list is so much better than ours that when one of their depth pieces in terms of prospects comes over here, he automatically seems so much more valuable just by the virtue of being ranked higher within our organizational prospect rankings. Like maybe he pulls off a miracle and becomes a full time NHLer but that seems quite unlikely.

Stillman sucks. He will be a healthy scratch most nights. It was a weird trade

This bump reminds me of when a couple Canuck fans were going nuts over how great Ryan Stanton was after we moved on from him a decade ago.

I feel like it was a real small subset of Canucks fans who were stoked on Stanton. He was such a nothing player who couldn't skate well.

Then Vancouver really capped it off by sending Forsling over for Clendening who also couldn't skate. Didn't do either team a whole lot of good, but the best player in the whole exchange is pretty clear. Just needed...a lot more patience than either Vancouver or Chicago had.

Hey now! He was the next Tanev! Literally every player we had that hit the following criteria: 1) A defenseman 2) A not great offensive defenseman 3) A defenseman who knew where our zone was. All of them? The next Tanev and, in fact, we still have several more to come, I think.....

Still waiting on Frankie Corrado to materialize as the next Tanev tbh. When's the ETA on that?

Hey those were the trauma years when Jim Benning would let perfectly serviceable depth players who were playing well in the lineup go for nothing so he could in this case pay Matt Bartkowski $1.75M to do the same job but at twice the cost while also being worse at it.

Sabres fans when Adams drafts in third round - Awesome player! What a steal!
also
Sabres fans when the third round player is traded away - Meh, he wasn't very good anyways

i think every fanbase does this?

a lot of ppl’s undying love affair with tyler madden ended very abruptly when jim benning traded him to rent toffoli

Stanton was a Gillis acquisition. One of his many bargain bin "gems".

Right after Brogan Raffferty turns into the next Quinn Hughes

Ahhh. cool. It's nice that they've got a schedule for it all.

that's the point

stanton was bad and cheap and was let go in favour of players who were worse and cost three times as much because of the benning-boston connection

The doghouse
This is a silly bump. Buffalo got a depth defensmen that they like and played well for us. Buffalo gave up a middling forward prospect that is a lottery ticket. That seems like a very fair trade.

It’s nice that the prospect had a good dev camp, but weird time to bump it

I understand that Sabres are flushed with forwards, that should still have 0 effect on trading from a massive leverage position that they had on the Canucks.

Whats the value of getting rid of 1.3 mil anchor in cap space? 3rd? 4th round?

okay now factor in the fact that Stillman had term and is still under contract for 1.3 mil this year.

whats the value in that in terms of a sweetner? a 2nd or a 3rd?

If Sabre fans think they are so flushed with talent that they can afford to waste getting a 2nd and 3rd round picks then by all means.

In value , this trade should have been,

to Sabres
Stillman
3rd round pick

To Canucks
Future Consideration

What are you talking about? Bloom was drafted at the very end of the third round and is developing fine. Stop acting like he was a valuable asset

And the trade doesn’t make sense to you because you are valuing Stillman as a cap dump when no one else clearly did. The Canucks clearly didn’t, and the Sabres clearly didn’t. I get it, he sucked on your team and you think he was a cap dump. But pro scouts clearly thought better of him. nothing you are saying is anything more than your opinion that is contradicted by everything

Bloom would be maybe the 15th best forward prospect in the Sabres organization right now. He would never make the team there. They moved him for someone who played NHL games for them and helped the third pair turn it around late in the year. That trade makes perfect sense

Congrats on your new top forward prospect.

And congrats to Bloom for finally hitting a PPG in his draft +2 4th season in the OHL. What a stud.

What even is this. Bloom was like 3 years away from being anything. Stillman was an excellent bottom pairing D for us last year. Sure he got pushed down, oh well. Injuries happen.

If he ever makes the NHL, it will be in the bottom 6 role. He's not competing with the more offensive minded prospects for the top 6.
