He didn't quit - he's retiring.

Someone should change that. Guy at least deserved to step down without controversy.

- A retiring employee is considered to be quitting, the California Supreme Court has ruled in McLean v. State of California.

When deputy attorney general Janis McLean retired in 2010, she alleged the state did not pay wages owed within 72 hours pursuant to the labor code section 202. The state argued that as she retired and Section 202 covers employees who quit, not employees who retire, there had been no wrongdoing.

The California Supreme Court affirmed unanimously in August that employees who retire are, in fact, quitting.

Spurrier quit. Stoops retired. The timing is odd but other than that he retired fair and square. Good man.

There's a difference between what he did and what saban, Spurrier and petrino did. To me they quit out of nowhere in the season or right after because they failed.

Bob Stoops is retiring at OU, effectively immediately, a source told me Wednesday, confirming a Daily Oklahoman report. Lincoln Riley is set to take over the program as the new head coach.

"He's ready and wants to go live life," the source told me about why Stoops is walking away now. Stoops' father Ron, died at just 54 after he suffered a heart attack while coaching a high school game and then died on the way to the hospital.

The 56-year-old Stoops led Oklahoma to the 2000 national title and took the Sooners to 10 Big 12 titles, including in each of the past two seasons. He won Big 12 coach of the Year honors six times. The Sooners went 60-30 (.667) against AP Top 25 foes during his tenure—the highest winnning percentage against ranked teams of any school during that stretch. His teams also went 25-11 against its two biggest rivals (14-4 vs. Oklahoma State and 11-7 against Texas).

In 1999, Stoops took over a proud program that had gone five years without a winning season and by his second season, he coached the Sooners to the national title. In 18 seasons, Stoops produced seven Top 5 finishes and 11 in the Top 10.

The 33-year-old Riley won the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach in 2015. The Texas native, who has spent seven seasons as an offensive coordinator, is the latest in a run of Sooner coaches who took over the program in their 30s.

Legendary OU coach Bud Wilkinson was 31 when he was promoted to the head coaching job. Chuck Fairbanks was 34 when he took over at Oklahoma. Barry Switzer was 36 and Stoops was 39 when he was hired in Norman as the new head man. Three of those four head coaches won national titles at OU, and the fourth, Fairbanks, led the Sooners to three top three finishes in his six seasons there.

Riley has passed on several FBS head coaching opportunities in recent years, including at Purdue, USF, Cincinnati and Houston. OU brass has been grooming him for this opportunity for over a year. Last fall, OU began working on an unprecedented three-year deal for an assistant.

In 2016, QB Baker Mayfield and WR Dede Westbrook finished third and fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, while Westbrook was a unanimous All-American and OU’s first recipient of the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. The Sooners averaged 7.5 yards per play, second-best in school history (7.6 in 1971).

Riley is expected to remain in his role as the Sooners play caller this season, per sources.

Riley grew up under Mike Leach, but has also been mentored by Stoops, Ruffin McNeill and Donnie Duncan.

"Lincoln's very bright and prepared," said Leach. "Becoming a head coach is a little like getting married. You're never truly ready for it till you're in the middle of it. There's a lot of moving parts.

"Lincoln thinks independently, and a lot of guys don't. That's one of his real strengths."

Nobody should take anything seriously determined out of Cal-i-forn-i-a. They are closer to being their own country than anything else.

He didn't retire though because apparently he's going to be the assistant to the athletic director or some ****.

To me retiring means no employment.

The sad part of fear mongering. Just because his dad got a heart attack doesn't mean that he will. There are reasons people get them but family history is a scare tactic. Its like cancer. Cancer loves an acidic body and is a parasite that needs a host. What causes the heart attack is the person's habits. Sure coaching and sports are stressful if you let them be but this depends on your outlook at life. I wouldn't be a serious coach. I would want to win but enjoy it. The fact I'm being paid to coach is cool. It beats having a lame office job and coaches now make enough money to live off of one contract. Its all about what you value or how you see life.
