Hi,

Bob Froese came 5th in Vezina voting in 1986-87, yet only played three games all season. Anyone know the story? He looked to be backing up Hextall in a Vezina season.

Cheers...

Thanks -- I'm trying to come up with a case for the debate on the main board, and I'm amazed how many goalies with less than 40 GP are getting vezina votes. NHL.com has Froese only playing 3 GP that year, their stats are messed up....

You're missing the 28 games he played for the New York Rangers.

All in all, Froese had 17 wins, a 0.885 SV% and a GAA over 3,50.
Considering that Froese had a very good season in 85-86... Wouldn't that be a typo?

Froese finished 2nd in voting for the Vezina in that 85-86 season. Perhaps he finished in 5th because GMs were either remembering what he did that season and he got residual votes, or they were upset he didn't win in 86' and voted for him the next year to show their disapproval.

It should be noted that although he finished 5th, he only received 2 votes (1st, 2nd), so it only takes a couple knuckleheads to make this happen. The Rangers starter, Vanbiesbrouck, also received a 1st place vote (and a 3rd) even though he didn't have a great season. Maybe the Rangers GM just voted his own goalies 1st and 2nd. That's a possible explanation for one of Froese's votes.

as for goalies getting vezina consideration witn less than 40 games, keep in mind that starters didn't play nearly as much as they do now. Platoon situations were much more common. 40 games meant more than it does now, that's for sure.
