(AP) Florida: In the end, they fell one game short.

The story book ending for the St. Louis Blues ended on Saturday night, as the Blues fell 4-2 to the Florida Panthers in game 7 of HFNHL Stanley Cup Final.

The Blues players watched the Panthers lift Lord Stanley, their HFNHL record 2nd consecutive title, a bitter moment for a team that felt it was destined for the Cup this year.

The Blues had held a 3-2 series advantage going into the final weekend, only to lose back-to-back games in two tightly fought games. While the loss of game 6 at home was a lost opportunity, the Blues had been the playoffs top road team this spring, having won and two out of three in Florida thus far in the Final and only suffered two other losses on the road all playoffs, having gone 6-2 in the first three Western series.

The team felt confident they could win game 7, given their success in that arena thus far in the series.

And while the Blues attempted to storm back and win game 7 after falling behind 3-2 after 2 periods, they couldn’t beat Jonathan Quick, who stopped all 19 shots he faced in the third period to seal the victory, and 36 of 38 shots over the game.

While their run through the Western Conference had been coined The Spring of Vengeance for the Blues as they knocked out three conference rivals, all of whom had eliminated the Blues at least once in the last five seasons, the final against the Panthers presented a different narrative, where a team with a long history of regular season success, but disappointing post seasons, went up against the league’s top franchise in the Florida Panthers.

In the end, the Panthers remained the class of the league and deserve full marks for the victory.

And so begins another offseason of discontent for the Blues, albeit one with a slightly later 1st round pick than they are used to.

While the team should remain relatively in tact for next season, some changes are inevitable given the cap situation for the franchise.

Game 7 has gotta sting but you had an excellent season and built an outstanding team. Great work!
