  • The Bruins cap hit is at $62.12 mil. This leaves the team over $16 mil of space.
  • The average age of our NHL roster is 25.5 this year. Aging core pieces were moved out and cheap young talent was brought in as the B's try a semi-rebuild on the fly. There's tons of cap room for the B's to make further deals to improve.
  • Jeremy Lauzon will make his debut as the last of Sweeney's 3 excellent 2015 draft D prospects joins the Bruins. Lauzon made huge strides in the offseason and much is expected of him.
  • The Bruins have 5 open contract spots.
  • Pending UFA on the NHL roster this year: Alex Petrovic.
  • Pending RFAs on the NHL roster this year: Daniel Sprong, Nick Merkley, Dennis Yan, Jeremy Lauzon, Jakub Zboril, Vinnie Hinostroza.
  • An incredibly young and talented team is shaping up in Boston. It will be exciting to see how their young players progress.
  • The Bruins went 4-2-1 in the preseason. Daniel Sprong, Auston Matthews, and Nick Merkley led the way with 8 points each. Sprong had 3 PP goals and the power play was deadly. The offense was effective, but the defensive play was inconsistent. It looks like they could have some wild hockey games in their future. Can Subban handle the insanity?

Jan. 16, 2020
At the halfway mark the Boston Bruins are 22-17-2, 5th in the Atlantic and 11th in the East, 5 points out of a wild card spot. Just 3 days ago the team made a small deal with Vancouver, sending last summer's 6th round pick Josh Brook in exchange for Vancouver's next two 6th round picks. The team has shown flashes of offensive brilliance but have yet to find consistency in either end throughout the season. The power play has shown marked improvement and sits at over 20% for the first time in the GM JJ regime. The young defense corps have been up and down but display tons of potential. Offseason acquisition Victor Hedman at 29 is the oldest of the bunch. Malcolm Subban has had some trouble this year but backup Felix Kollejan has been very successful. Rask was aging and regressing and the return of Hedman in the deal with Jersey was unquestionably good, but it remains to be seen if Subban can fill Rask's shoes.

Jesse Gabrielle made his NHL debut early in the season following injuries to Krejci and Sprong. He dressed for 3 games without a point and stayed with the team for some time but was eventually returned to Providence. 22 year old Daniel Sprong looks like a great pickup as he has 14 goals in 37 games so far. He had 13 in each of the last 2 full seasons with Pittsburgh, who tried to trade him for a long time before the deal with Boston finally came to fruition. It's hard to say how the Bruins should approach the upcoming deadline. They certainly moved all in in the direction of youth in the offseason. Let's take a look at their trade clause situation leading up to the trade deadline.

Hedman has full no movement this year.

Bergeron may be asked for a 3 team list.

Okposo may be asked for an 8 team list.

Krejci, Spooner, and Krug may be asked for a 15 team list.

At the deadline...

Boston|94 OFF|93 DEF|92 GOA|82% CHEM

Mar. 6, 2020
At the trade deadline the Bruins' record is 34-26-3. They are 11th in the East, and 5 points out of a playoff spot. The East is particularly strong this year and it seems like it will take an unusually high number of points to claim a playoff berth this year. The team made a few moves leading up to the deadline, sending prospects D Benjamin Gleason and LW Jason Robertson to Vancouver in exchange for a pair of 2021 picks; a 4th rounder and a 5th rounder. They also shipped off C Marcus Kruger along with their own 2021 4th round pick for G prospect Chad Brophey. The biggest move saw the team acquire goaltender Michael McNiven from the Montreal Canadiens who simply had more goaltending talent than they need with Price, McNiven, Stuart Skinner and Zach Fucale all quality NHL options. Boston parted ways with Malcolm Subban but also received Montreal's 3rd round pick in this year's upcoming draft as part of the deal. Subban will join his brother P.K. in Montreal. Trade action was busy league wide this year and one of the biggest deals saw Brent Burns moved for the second time in less than a calendar year from the Rangers to the Flyers along with Chris Kreider for Steve Mason and a pair of excellent prospects. The Rangers also acquired Connor Hellebuyck from Winnipeg as they continue to search for goaltending answers in the post-Lundquist era. The Panthers sold the farm, sending Erik Gudbranson off to Anaheim for Frederik Andersen, a first round pick and a second round pick, and they also sent Reilly Smith and Jonathan Huberdeau to the 'Canes for a first rounder, second rounder, third rounder and a pair of prospects.

Providence have continued their strong play this year and are now third in the AHL Eastern Conference. Matthias Greilinger has proved to be an exciting prospect to watch as the recent 2nd round pick has already recorded 18 goals in his first pro season, a mark which presently leads his team.

May 13, 2020

The Bruins had their strongest regular season to date since GM JJ took over registering 97 points, which was 11th in the NHL. Incredibly, that mark was only good enough for 9th in the East. It would have been tops in the West's Central Division. While the team missed the playoffs there is generally a sense of optimism surrounding the team's future, and the team has tons of cap space to work with in the offseason.

The salary cap will increase to $79.52 million for the upcoming season which leaves the Bruins about $23 million dollars to work with. They've got a few players who will need to get a pay raise. We'll see if they have enough leftover to pursue any high profile free agents.

Washington defeated Colorado in the Finals in 5 games, for the second Cup in team history.

Tyler Seguin (44 G) took home the Rocket Richard Trophy, while Alex Ovechkin won the Art Ross (40 G, 57 A) and the Conn Smythe (13 G, 11 A). Carey Price (1.74 GAA, .941 SV%, 10 SO) won the Vezina for the second year running- and the Hart as well with his historically excellent season. Morgan Reilly (19 G, 38 A) took home the Norris, while Vladimir Tarasenko (40 G, 82 PTS, 0 PIM) won the Lady Byng. Sonny Milano (20 G, 57 PTS) of the Blue Jackets won the Calder and Ryan Getzlaf was named the Selke winner as the league's best defensive forward.

AHL REPORT

The Providence Bruins lost in the second round to an extremely good Bridgeport Sound squad but finished 6th overall in the regular season as they continue to be a top AHL team each year.

2020 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
The Bruins have 8 picks this year; 1 for rounds 1, 4, 5, and 7, and 2 each in rounds 3 and 6. Their third round picks initially belonged to Philadelphia and Montreal, while their extra 6th round pick initially belonged to Vancouver. The B's are unlikely to move any key pieces at the draft, but it is possible they could make some moves on the minor league level to make room for this year's draft class.

ROUND|PICK #|PLAYER|AGE|HT|WT|POS|TYPE|POTENTIAL|OVERALL
1|14| Warren Grahame |20|5'11"|189|D|OFD| MED TOP 4 D |81

7|194| Dan McFarland |19|6'2"|200|C|PLY| LOW BOTTOM 6 F |63

A very good draft for the Bruins this year. Grahame was slated to go late in the first and the Bruins took him earlier than expected but the 20 year old already has a strong game and could compete for an NHL job in camp. Will Chapman is a real pest who slid down the board a little to the Bruins and Harry Pominville is expected to have a shot at making the Baby B's starting lineup this year. Gogolev is a slick Russian playmaker with excellent speed on the wing. 5th round pick Brandon Grantham is the younger brother of Providence winger Tommy Grantham and many think the younger brother has the potential to some day make the jump to the NHL; something it's starting to look like his older brother will never do. Anthony Tamura is still quite young and plays a similar game to the Grantham brothers. Howes is a solid G prospect and McFarland was not expected to be drafted but was a solid playmaking centre with good size in the U.S. National Development League.

  • The average age of our NHL roster is 26.2 this year.
  • LW Ryan Gropp is the sole rookie on this year's squad as a very similar team returns from last year.
  • The Bruins have 4 open contract spots.
  • Pending UFA on the NHL roster this year: David Krejci.
  • Pending RFAs on the NHL roster this year: Ryan Gropp.
  • The Bruins went 4-3-0 in the preseason. Daniel Sprong led the club with 7 points and Mike McNiven had a SV% of .969 in the 4 games he started and the team won them all. Meanwhile, backup Felix Kollejan was shelled for the three losses and had a SV% of .853. Kollejan was decent last year but if his play continues to be poor he could be a candidate for replacement.

After 41 games...

Boston|94 OFF|95 DEF|87 GOA|83% CHEM
Providence|87 OFF|81 DEF|78 GOA|83% CHEM

Jan. 15, 2021
At the halfway mark the Boston Bruins are 21-13-7, 3rd in the Atlantic and 5th in the East. First string goaltender Michael McNiven is currently injured, and Evan Fitzpatrick has been called up from Providence, recording a win and a loss since his recall. The team has a goal differential of +21 and you might think their record would be a little better with such a stat. The power play was top notch at the start of the year but has cooled recently. Ryan Gropp is having an outstanding rookie season, leading the team in points with 35 and Auston Matthews is second with 32 points in 37 games. The team called up Matthias Greilinger earlier in the year when there were some injuries but he did not see action before being returned to Providence. Val Nichushkin has 12 goals this year at the halfway mark after never having surpassed 15 in the first 6 seasons of his career.

The trade clause situation remains the exact same as last year. Krejci is the sole player on this list who is on an expiring contract. At 34 years old he has played his entire career with the Bruins, who drafted him in 2004 in the second round. His play is regressing, yet he still holds some value as he could be a second line centre in many markets. His cap hit is large at 7.25 million. The team must consider trading him, or they could roll the dice and hope he will sign a much cheaper deal in the offseason to remain with the team. A compelling reason to keep Krejci if possible is his utility and skill on the penalty kill. Other than Bergeron he is clearly the team's best defensive forward. Spooner is a trade candidate as well, he is having a decent season but is losing ice time to the younger stars on the team and carries a cap hit of 3 million. The same could be said about Carl Hagelin, and another player who could be vulnerable given the team's depth at left wing could be Jake DeBrusk. He had 16 goals in his rookie season, 13 last year, and had 5 through 32 games this year before finally being scratched for the first time in his pro career. At 24 his progress seems to be stalled and if it is his stock will only drop in the future.

Providence had an historic first half, posting a record of 31-5-2. Their points percentage is an incredible 84.21%. Their 64 points are 11 better than second place in the AHL. Matthias Greilinger leads the team in points and is 2nd in goals in the AHL despite missing 7 games while called up to the big club. The team is outscoring opponents by an average of 3.47 - 1.95 per game, an astonishing figure of over one and a half goals per game plus and both league leading figures.

Hedman has full no movement this year.

Bergeron may be asked for a 3 team list.

Okposo may be asked for an 8 team list.

Krejci, Spooner, and Krug may be asked for a 15 team list.

Boston|95 OFF|93 DEF|92 GOA|82% CHEM
Providence|87 OFF|81 DEF|78 GOA|83% CHEM

Mar. 5, 2021
At the trade deadline the Bruins' record is 34-22-8. They are 5th in the East, and 3rd in the Atlantic. The team made a huge trade in front of the deadline, sending Jake DeBrusk to the Capitals in a straight 1-for-1 for Alex Ovechkin. The aging winger still has plenty of offensive pop, but is likely just a rental as it will be hard for Boston to re-sign him in the offseason. The team also made an exchange of prospects with San Jose, sending LW Will Chapman and G Ray Howes off for C Ola Helmersson. Backup goaltender Felix Kollejan has been out for some time with concussion issues but Evan Fitzpatrick has done a decent job in his place. D Jeremy Lauzon is also out right now but expected to be back soon.

Meanwhile, even without their first string goalie, Providence have continued to roll, and now have a record of 45-8-5 as backup Chad Brophey has been quite good in Fitzpatrick's absence. G Theo Weber has made his pro debut and while not everything has gone his way- he has just 1 win in 5 games on a very dominant team, he does in fact have a SV% of .926 which looks very good on the 20 year old netminder.

Notes

MacKinnon missed 31 games in the middle of the season due to a concussion.

In playoffs, I also had few key injuries. Landeskog was injured in game 3 against Hawks, and MacKinnon injured in the next game.
Down 4-0 after the 1st period of Game 5, I forced the OT and won the game at the end of the 1st OT.
After being down 5-2 after 2 periods, I thought it was over, but another huge comeback forces game 7. Johnson tied the game 5 and also the game 6 in the last minute. And O'Reilly scored a SHG with 0.8 to go. Penalty taken between goals 6 and 7.
After playing game 5 and 6 95% of the time with 2 lines, MacKinnon came back to play game 7.
I put Ryan O'Reilly on the first line (LW) to start the OT. And that change payed in the middle of the OT. He scored the GWG. We're in the CF.

Another sweep in WCF.

In SCF
Vrbata 2 goals in G1, 1 goal in G3
Landeskog came back after missing 11 games. Back for G4
A lucky bounce, and the puck come right on Martin St Louis stick. G4. Turning point of the series.

Vrbata (14+11) and Duchene(10+15) finish both with 25 points in the playoffs. Best in the league. Vrbata also the best in goals and Duchene in assists.

Rangers won the Cup and the Presidents Trophy.

Notes

Last year WCF to begin the playoffs this year.
In game 2 Ellis injured, in game 3 Mitchell injured, in game 4 Williams injured, in game 6 Holden injured. I recalled J.Caron from AHL. And he will stay with the big team, because Lake Erie are out of the playoffs this season. At least they were injured for 1 game maximum. Just Mitchell are out long term, like Armstrong who was injured in the regular season at the end.

Same 2nd round as last year.
Was easier than last year.

WCF. When I finally thought everyone one was healthy, Johnson injured himself in the last game against Chicago. Will miss the start of the series against the Kings. Johnson cameback in game 3, but Ellis injured himself in the same game, and will be out until august. So I'll play 0 games with a full healthy at 100% lineup in this playoff.

SCF. We're back.
Fedotenko and St. Louis both scored their 4th goal of the playoffs in game 1. Duchene and Gaudreau scores in 3rd period to give us a huge win. Gaudreau injured in game 4, will miss the rest of the playoffs.
Game 7 of the SCF, it's what why we playing this game.
Duchene open the score with 17:38 remaining in the 3rd period. Almost 10 minutes later, McGinn give us a breathing room. Holland scores with 6.3 to go during a 6-on-4. But it wasn't enough. A monster game by Varlamov. 1st star of the game.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS:yo: Duchene Conn Smythe.:yo:

Like last year, the President's Trophy winner, win also the Stanley Cup.:yo:

How do you do an expansion team setup? You have to substitute for an NHL team, so what do you do with that teams players/assets?

Yeah, you have to substitute a team. I substituted Arizona, and then traded all the good prospects away from Arizona's team. Maybe you can do the expansion feature actually implemented into the 'Franchise Mode' section, but never done that.

I don't think there is an expansion draft feature, but there is one rumored to be in NHL 18.

BREAKING NEWS: David Poile out as Preds GM, Paul Fenton promoted to GM

EcjZoKL.png

After serving as the Nashville Predators GM for 18 years and 17 seasons, the team and David Poile reached a mutual agreement for him to step down as general manager. Poile has been the GM since the team's inception in 1998. He will remain in the organization as President of Hockey Operations.

During Poile's tenure, the Predators have made the playoffs 9 times and missed them 8 times. During those 9 post season runs, Nashville made it to round 2 just 3 times, and has never made it to the Western Conference Finals. They have also never won a regular season conference or division championship.

Nashville's ownership group cited lack of success over a long period of time as the reason for the changeup.

"He means a lot to this team and this city, and that's why we're keeping him in the organization. Unfortunately, we feel he's been given more than enough time to have success with this team, but we have yet to see it, so we decided to move on".

Paul Fenton, who has also been with the team from day one, had been serving as the Predators' assistant GM as well as the GM of their AHL team, the Milwaukee Admirals.

Many hockey insiders are speculating that this season will be a trial run to see if Fenton brings a different approach than Poile. If ownership likes what they see, they'll keep him around. If not, he may not last past this season as ownership is growing increasingly impatient for the team to have true success.

Training Camp Roster Openings

2nd Line Center
Candidates: Mike Fisher (83), Mike Ribeiro (84)
Fisher gets the benefit of the doubt for now because he's been around longer and knows the team better, but it's a toss up and whoever has the better preseason will likely get the spot. The loser will center the 3rd line.

3rd Line Right Wing
Candidates: Viktor Arvidsson (81), P.A. Parenteau (83)
Arvidsson gets favorability here because he's younger and close to the same skill level. Loser will play 4th line left wing.

4th Line Right Wing
Candidates: Justin Fontaine (81), Vernon Fiddler (81), Austin Watson (80), Cody McLeod (80)
Easily the most crowded battle, anybody can win this spot by beating out the rest in preseason. The losers will either be scratched, sent down to the AHL, or traded.

3rd Pair Defensemen (2)
Candidates: Yannick Weber (81), Matt Irwin (80), Anthony Bitetto (79), Petter Granberg (78)
Weber and Irwin are the favorites, but they aren't locks for those two spots.

Backup Goalie
Candidates: Juuse Saros (79), Marek Mazanec (79)
Saros is younger, so they may want him to get a majority of starts in the AHL rather than only a handful of starts in the NHL behind Pekka Rinne.

2017 7th round pick (ARI)|Jonas Gunnarsson

Player Profiles:
Player|Team|Pos.|Age|Overall|Potential|Contract
Jonas Gunnarsson|NSH->ARI|G|24|63|Medium AHL Fringe G|1 YL, $635K

Fenton: "Arizona needed an AHL goalie, and unfortunately, he wouldn't have gotten any starts here, so it's good for both sides".

Analyst: "Not much to talk about here. Probably just as Fenton said, just giving Gunnarsson a chance to play".

Player Profiles:

Cody Bass|NSH->CAR|C|29|75|Exact AHL Top 6 F|2 YL, $615K

Fenton: "Just a move to clear some roster room so we can add some players via free agency, waivers, or a trade later in the season".

Analyst: "Probably just Fenton shipping out a player or two that he doesn't see fitting in. No big deal".

Fenton: "We wanted to clear up some cap space, and this accomplishes that goal for us".

Analyst: "Have to think there's something coming with Fenton moving out three contracts today and clearing almost two million in cap space".

Player Profiles:
Player|Team|Pos.|Age|Overall|Potential|Contract
James Wisniewski|FA->NSH|D|32|85|Exact Top 6 D|3 YL, $3.5M AAV

Fenton: "This will give us a really good bottom pairing guy, or if there's injuries, a guy who can hold his own in the top 4".

Analyst: "The money isn't terrible, but the term is questionable. 3 years for a 32 year old who's had injury problems? This could come back to haunt them down the road".

Notes

A meeting with the Wild in the playoffs for the 3rd straight year.

Bonino (hate you) scores the lone goal in the 3rd period to deny a 3rd straight SCF for the Avalanche.

Vancouver will win the Cup a few weeks later.

Like I said when I started the GM mode, at the end of the contract, if I won a Cup during my tenure, I'll change the team. So, I'll GM a new team in the next post:)
