Basic NHL 13 GM Mode Question

I've been playing GM mode for a while now and I still can't figure this out. Is there a way to negotiate a new contract with a player before their contract expires?

Example: Orpik has 1 year left on his contract with my team and I want to negotiate a new contract during the season before he hits free agency next year. Is this possible?

no, you can only re-sign players after the draft

Ok, so if Orpik had 1 year left on his contract and its during the draft, can I negotiate an extension/new contract with him during the draft?

Or can I only negotiate with players that are going to be UFA, RFA?

Yup you can only resign him after the draft during the resigning period when he hits UFA or RFA. but make sure to sign him before the FA or hell or any high player will ask for more money.
