I was surprised by the shot count. For all the shots Minnesota had I didn't really think they had any really dangerous chances or situations where Juicy was floundering. They were on the powerplay for about 90% of the second period and with their season on the line they're obviously going to come out hard in the third, but I didn't really think they overwhelmed us at any point.

Still, us sending them golfing is always amusing. Good riddance.

Yeah you are right. It is very hard in Bednar's system to play a full 60 minutes especially the last 3-4 minutes of all periods due to fatigue.

Regardless of systems though it is very rare that any hockey team will play 60 minutes. It is just humain nature. The team will have a let down for a few stretches during any games, or they will sit back on a lead, or the other team will push back, etc. playing a full 60 minutes is very rare and that goes for all teams. I would say the best teams are probably around 55-56 minutes most nights if that.
I agree most teams aren't playing a full 60 every night. It's more of a phase to indicate that they need to me effective for the entire game not small portions.

I guess me there are too many games like last night where we played well for a period then like shit for 2. Yeah we won but we probably shouldn't have. We are lucky that when we are playing our best it's virtually impossible for teams to keep up and often it's enough to win a game. But far too many games we aren't playing at a high enough level for a long enough period of time. Somehow this team needs to figure out a way to bring a higher level on a more consistent basis. You aren't going to win playoff games with 20 mins of good play.

I unfortunately missed the game last night outside a clip or two of the third and the game recap.

How was Justus?

First goal he gave up wasn't great. After that he was rock solid, especially on the penalty kill. The one goal he gave up there was after they had just survived a 5-on-3 and the point shot made its way through a perfect screen.

I seriously cannot recall the last time I truly loved the Avs' penalty kill. I've never understood why a team that emphasizes up-tempo play with excellent skaters up and down the lineup employs such a passive penalty kill. It's not just Bednar, his predecessors did it too. There's no reason IMO they can't do what the Rangers, Canes, and Stars do on a regular basis.

Also, I was reading a Jack Han breakdown of--I think--Toronto's penalty kill and why it had suddenly broken down, he blamed the fact that not having a RH RD really limits a team's ability to clear the puck. Thing is, the Avs' current system actually does this on purpose. I'm assuming they like having the LH/RH guys on their off-side so that there are sticks in the slot area. But then this makes it that much harder for them to dig out pucks and clear it. Just one aspect of many where I just don't like the choices the coaches make on the penalty kill. It is my one consistent criticism of Bednar's tenure.

Last critique--someone see if Mark Barberio is interested in coming back as a chip-the-puck coaching specialist, because I swear he is the only Avs player I've seen in the last 5-plus years or so who could do it consistently. Too often the guys are either rifling it all the way down the ice, and when they try to lift it they either don't get enough on it and it's intercepted, or they sent it sailing over the glass.

Anyway, not really mad or anything about the effort tonight. I think they're definitely in "start the playoffs already" mode (heavens knows I definitely am) so a somewhat uneven effort like this is to be expected. Glad they turned it on long enough to pull out a decisive win and Justus was more than good enough.

Wild announcers call themselves a playoff caliber team while simultaneously already making excuses for why they miss they playoffs.
Absolute joke. Oh yeah, they're a playoff team but just had some bad luck. Sure, they would have won the last 5 cups in a row if it wasn't for - you guessed it - bad luck.
Yeah, that was a weird conversation. They also talked about their injuries while conveniently leaving out the Avs injuries.

That broadcast team has had a tough night.
Seemed like a new guy doing the color commentary. I don't think you could actually program an android to do a better job of representing who this classless, garbage, entitled franchise really are and I'm sure it comes from the very top and trickles down.

How many times did he mention that the Avs just lost to Columbus on Monday??? Three times by my count and that was only the 1st period. Whatever helps them feel good about their team, I guess.

Laughable 'explanation' of the Lehkonen goal saying the Avs 'set a pick' to explain why Zucc sucked so bad on that play.
(Psst - dude, your Hobbit wasn't picked, he just didn't feel like giving a f*** defensively.)

It's par for the course really...he fits that team and that broadcast perfectly.

It's the "gegenpress" defense. A term I wasn't familiar with until now.

A very nice read. Didn't actually think to make the connection between the Avs and Jurgen Klopps Dortmund/Liverpool teams, but it's not that far-fetched TBH.

Criticizing other broadcast teams is very glass house-ian IMO.
Avs broadcast are homers - no doubt about that but they certainly wouldn't go out of their way to basically mock another team three times because they lost a game to one of the worst teams on the league.

They're homers but not assholes.
