That's honestly unbelievable! It certainly makes a statement about the state of officiating and the lack of supervision of officials at the AUS and CIS level.

Hopkins did 5 other UNB games this season and in those 5 games UNB averaged 10.8 penalties per game and 58.8 minutes per game. Opponents averaged 8.75 penalties per game but only 35 minutes per game.
He was also the official in the UNB / St. FX game on Jan. 16th where he had absolutely no control and called a total of 192 minutes in penalties.
He certainly seems like a strange choice for officiating at Nationals!

Maybe unb has a discipline issue. They were the most penalized team in the regular season and play on the edge.

They were the most penalized team in the league... but almost half of their total PIMs came in the 5 games Hopkins called.

They had 676 PIM in 27 games in the regular season (for some reason, the AUS website is missing the Feb 6 game against Acadia) for an average of 25.0 PIM/game. However, they averaged 58.8 PIM/game in the 5 games Hopkins called for a total of 294 PIM. That means that, in the other 22 games, they averaged 17.4 PIM/game -- that's a pretty significant jump from 17.4 PIM/game to 58.8 PIM/game...

My issue was not with the amount of penalties, but what was a penalty? There was no consistency, the Carrol penalty was a bad call, the non call on Willick, the Thomas penalty, well he had been waiting to call him, another weak call, and at a key point in the game.
I was surprised that GMac didn't get one from the bench!

St. FX over SMU 5-1 in a game that was much more closely played than the score would indicate. X was the better team, but Owsley was very, very good tonight to keep SMU to just one goal.

Not an excuse, but missing Johnston, Beyers and Duffy doesn't help the offence. SFX had the edge on face-offs, physical play, territorial advantage and PP goals. The third goal with 4 seconds left in the 1st period was a back-breaker. SMU never really threatened after that. Owsley played very well and didn't face many rebound shots as SFX were pretty good boxing out. Again, they were the better team by a good margin. Winning 3 straight is a huge task for SMU.

Smu

if Johnson and Duffy don't see action in game 3, that will be a long layoff entering a must win game at Nationals. Those are two skilled players that SMU are missing, especially on the pp.
X is playing very good structured hockey right now, they are better than the team that hosted last year, that's for sure.

SMU without Maynard/Duffy/Johnston/Beyers tonight. They are going to be in tough tonight.

I also noticed that SMU has announced they will be playing their UCup opener on Friday night.

Do you run the risk of getting rusty if you start Friday and end Tuesday, for example?

Doesn't the AUS Finals need to be over at least a week before the UCup begins? That would mean the latest it could get over is Wednesday or Thursday....not much difference really.

If both series end tonight I could see them go Friday/Sunday/Tuesday...or perhaps Saturday/Monday/Wednesday. I would think they would want to get at least one game on a Friday or Saturday night...although as we have seen many times, the AUS doesn't always make sense when it comes to that kind of thing.

UNB 4 UPEI 0 - No big surprise here. UNB jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Parks got pulled after the third goal in favor of Mahalak. Marcoux with 25 saves for the shutout.

SMU 4 STFX 0 - Didn't see any of the game. Score is a bit of a surprise. Especially considering the players the Huskies are missing. X was 0 for 11 on the power play. Max Iafrate got a 5min major. Might be suspended for next game.

They announced a Match for Iafrate. That is an auto 3 games or 2?

SFX were not on their game tonight. They looked flat while SMU had some jump and capitalized on a turnover or two. I would expect a better effort on Wed by SFX.

A lot of people thought Mad Max got off lightly back in January so it will be interesting to see how the always interesting ( to be kind ) AUS Disciplinary Review handles his latest performance.
