coGMs Habsfan18 & VanIslander
coach Peter Laviolette

Herbie Lewis
- Mark Messier (C) - Didier Pitre
Bob Pulford
- Joe Nieuwendyk (A) - Jack Darragh
Don Marshall
- Leon Draisaitl - Blake Wheeler

Moose Johnson
- Jacques Laperriere
Babe Siebert (A)
- Tom Johnson
Babe Pratt
- Leo Boivin
Gennady Tsygankov

Terry Sawchuk
Rogie Vachon

Notes:
  • The Ottawa dynasty line re-united.
  • Babe & Punch top wingers in Maroons' 1st :stanley:
  • HHOF goalie Clint Benedict said:
You didn’t need to have a great defense in front of you when you had Frank Nighbor working that check on the front line.”
  • PP1: Draisaitl - Messier - Wheeler - Siebert - Pitre
  • PP2: Denneny - Nighbor/Nieuwy - Darragh - Pratt - Moose Johnson
  • PK1: Nighbor - Pulford - Johnson - Johnson - Sawchuk
  • PK2: Marshall - Nieuwendyk - Boivin - Laperriere - Sawchuk
Draft strategy:
Round 1: Messier qua BPA.
Round 2: Our division has Gretzky, Orr & Jagr! ... either we f them up with Lindsay added to Messier, & co later (e.g., Cleghorn, G.Suter, Tikki)... or 'contain' them with Nighbor (the master at that); to be clear, my co-GM talked me into the latter (hence 4 of our next 6 picks were dmen).
Round 3: There are no #1D available so #1G makes sense. Sawchuk? K. (I accepted, although always having chosen - 3 times in previous drafts - Hall over him).
Round 4: Having drafted Nighbor already weaponizes his linemate Denneny here! Locked & loaded & anticipated.
Rounds 5 thru 9: four BPA at their position on the blueline.. our first 8 picks had 4 defenseman picks despite going Messier, Nighbor, Sawchuk, ... 1,2,3.,...
Later rounds: Get Punch to re-unite the line, but also get Darragh, Nighbor's pre-dynasty linemate, to maximize the pivot's value.
Every round: Seek Duster types: gritty, hard working, high energy guys, preferably with size and speed, and durable excellent play.
Never round: Never chase the tail. 'Try not to be last... ?!' That strategy is playing scared, is about minimizing losses rather seeking advantages. Better to pivot than follow the leader.
(the truth sets you free, or kills you, or maybe both's the same message?

To be clear, this was to be the ideal team to build around Nighbor.

Chicago Shamrocks Real World Team History
In 1930, James Norris pursued the NHL for rights to a second NHL team in Chicago, but was spurned by the league who supported the NHL Chicago Black Hawks concerns regarding competition for fan base. He turned to the American Hockey Association who gave him rights to an expansion team in Chicago. The league had renamed itself the American Hockey League and declared itself a major league, to the anger of NHL president Frank Calder, who branded the league an outlaw league.

In 1931-32 season, their second, the Shamrocks won the league championship. Convinced they should be given a chance to play for the Stanley Cup, they petitioned the Cup trustees for that opportunity. However the trustees would have to convince the NHL to accept that challenge and the NHL would not. Perhaps frustrated by this, Norris once again looked to join the NHL.
