ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

It's (luckily) sort of a moot point now, but I don't believe that interpretation is consistent with past ATD practice. In a previous draft, I made a post (which I can't find now, on account of the site's post-searching functions perambulating to the land of llareggub once again), asking if the clock re-set on consecutive picks. I was informed that once a pick was skipped, subsequent GMs could pick until »all« skipped picks were made up.

I agreed that this interpretation made the most sense, organically. To interpret otherwise would allow (for example) the holder of the consecutive picks of Rounds 9 & 10 to place the flow of the draft into the House of Bondage for nearly 20 hours, without serious consequence.

Don't think anyone would ever want THAT to happen.

The last round of voting will end no later than Wednesday .

Then - after everybody makes every pick, including skipped picks - there is an ADD/DROP period (if needed only) to add one and drop one AT THE SAME TIME, to fix any minor mistake or adjustment needed. Some years there are NONE, some years one or two or a few GMs make changes. The add/drop period has been 48 hours in some years, a whole week in others, unwisely unspecified once.

A one-week clock ADD/DROP period, to commence after the last team (including skipped picks) are made, is a reasonable time frame. We don't want the time to drag like some have complained some years. Ideally we will have everything lined up, all teams assassinated, by the end of the month, or certainly by the end of the NHL regular season, April 18th. Hence regular season voting ought to be held no later than that date.

A defensively good playmaking wing is pretty hard to find. I still didn't want to take Marner on a top 3 line though until I trust him more in playoffs.

Three Rivers will round its team out with a well known name, even today by the casual hockey fan, thanks to an award.

Anyway, he has enough scoring punch to feature on a scoring line in an emergency, while playing the type of abrasive game that would fit as a bottom 6 C/LW.

As a player, Jack was a nuisance to opposing teams and was very crafty in the way he wove through their defenses. He was tough and he got into fights on a regular basis.

A raw, talented center who played top-level hockey in Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa over 10 years. He was known as a great digger and a fiery leader.

One game in 1919 speaks volumes about his burning desire to win. In the late stages of the tilt, many oaks like xxxxxxxxxxxx, *** *******, and Rusty Crawford were in particularly rough shape. xxxxxxxwas the first one sent hobbling off the ice, followed quickly by *******, who was taken away on a stretcher. As for big Crawford, he was whacked across the forehead by Newsy Lalonde. Goalie Hap Holmes lost a handful of teeth. Adams' head was cut up in a flurry of bodychecks, crosschecks, and high sticks. despite it all, the pudgy pivot played till the end, dashing up and down the boards with blood dripping over his eyes and ears.

...his last year in the NHL as a player was 1926-27, and although he wasn't used on the top line, he was lauded for his guts, brains, and leadership skills. The Senators took the cup and Adams took early retirement.

While I normally would've liked to pair my spare Turgeon with more of a grinder type guy, I didn't really see anyone I loved talent wise at RW at that mold (which allows me to fill in for both wings since Jack Walker can switch), so taking a player who's the probable 3rd most important piece on b2b title run sounds good enough to me: Phil the thrill Kessel.
