ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Irvin was a four-time Cup champion, that was also a 16-time Cup finalist. He was able to bring the most of his players, perhaps most famously by invigorating Rocket Richard into being the playoff monster he was. He was also famous for helping turn Plante into the superstar goalie he became. With Roy as our starter, it helps solidify a strong blue-line with rock-solid goaltending.

I happened upon this exchange between you and TDMM from a couple years back and though I also disagreed with his implication that Hull was effectively "Kovalchuk Mark II", his analysis of who a Hull/Kovalchuk type would thrive with seemed appropriate

"play defense" - Datsyuk's defensive capabilities are well established and Alf Smith's defensive acumen seems to have been a significant factor in his stock rising over the last couple years here on the board
"clear space" - Between Datsyuk's tremendous stickhandling and Smith being an absolute physical juggernaut, there should be no shortage of scenarios where defenders find themselves overwhelmed which will open up additional shooting lanes for Kovy
"get him the puck" - Both Datsyuk and Smith have been heralded for their playmaking and if Kovy is unavailable for a feed, they're also both legitimate scoring threats in their own right (Smith more so than Datsyuk)

Add in the multi-wing capability that you mentioned (which also applies to Smith) and that feels like a strong, versatile line

I happened upon this exchange between you and TDMM from a couple years back and though I also disagreed with his implication that Hull was effectively "Kovalchuk Mark II", his analysis of who a Hull/Kovalchuk type would thrive with seemed appropriate

"play defense" - Datsyuk's defensive capabilities are well established and Alf Smith's defensive acumen seems to have been a significant factor in his stock rising over the last couple years here on the board
"clear space" - Between Datsyuk's tremendous stickhandling and Smith being an absolute physical juggernaut, there should be no shortage of scenarios where defenders find themselves overwhelmed which will open up additional shooting lanes for Kovy
"get him the puck" - Both Datsyuk and Smith have been heralded for their playmaking and if Kovy is unavailable for a feed, they're also both legitimate scoring threats in their own right (Smith more so than Datsyuk)

Add in the multi-wing capability that you mentioned (which also applies to Smith) and that feels like a strong, versatile line

I guess I just don't remember how much Datsyuk liked to have the puck in the neutral zone. Kovalchuk was like a rocket who gained momentum in the neutral zone and tried to set himself up for a shot, but of course he could do more than that, but it was still his classic play.

Even my own comments on Hull/Kovalchuk was a little reductive of Kovy in tone, although it's true that Hull brought more than him.

Edit: Also, that 2021 draft was painful for me. I got busted on gambling for my 1st line RW and the whole thing ended up in a team-breaking catastrophe! Defending Hull became a life or death matter for my team, though in reality it was already a cadaver after that 1st RW fiasco.

They did @ Sochi in 2014 with Radulov as the RW to complete the line, that trio was responsible for the vast majority of Russia's scoring, even in the shootouts vs USA/Slovakia

Ovechkin and Malkin scored two quick goals within the first five minutes of their game vs Slovenia and never found the back of the net again

I remember waking up to watch Russia/Slovenia because it was the first game of the Olympics and almost immediately questioning that decision when it looked like it might be an absolute blowout

Russia still emerged victorious and was clearly the superior team but that game silenced any critics who viewed Slovenia as little more than "Kopitar & friends"

Had a rough time deciding because I really wanted an active player, but this guy checks off a bunch of boxes - playmaker for Stamkos on our 3rd line, good shot, can play both special teams and most notably the point on the PP.. he was known for being a bit soft but he's sheltered here and the positives outweigh the negatives.

Totally different skillsets, different role. Getting our 4C now really affects options targeted for later rounds, a cascading effect.

In a no-trade draft you can't just look at your choices for the present pick but the opportunity costs of waiting nearly 40 picks, the length of lists one deems fitting for other positions, etc. In a no-trade draft one looks several rounds ahead at the effects of one's picks. In a trade-galore draft you can shift gears and trade up and down whenever: a huge difference.
