ATD 2014 - Draft Thread II

The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

Now on a 6 hour clock.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.

• 12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (sending a shortlist to another GM highly encouraged here)
• then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
• then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
• then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
• then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick (two hour deduction for missing a 12 hour clock - leave a list), with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trades - No trades!

• Swapping your entire set of draft picks with another GM before either of you has made a single pick is allowed, however.

4). ADD/DROPS - At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 7 day period for add/drops. All add/drops must be 1-for-1. Dropped players will NOT be eligible to be added by other teams.

5). At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 10 day period for lineup assassinations. Assassinations will be divided by division.

6). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a potential lowering in the standings because each GM will rank his own team first. Co-GMs who both vote each get half a vote for the regular season rankings in their own division.

GMs who vote in every round of the playoffs will get preference of their draft positions in the following draft.

7). All Teams make the playoffs. The conferences will be divided into two divisions of 7 each, with the regular season divisional winner getting a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs will feature three intra-divisional matchups in each division, after which the remaining teams will compete in divisional semifinals (standard high vs. low seed) and divisional finals rounds. Winners of the divisions will meet in the conference finals, and winners of the conference will meet in the draft finals.

8). NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!!!

9). PM the next team after you have made your pick. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL!

MacKay won the Cup twice, you are correct, though he was a secondary player on Boston's 1929 Cup. I'm assuming that is the one Sturminator forgot.

He clearly was not the best player on the 1915 Millionaires - Nighbor and Taylor are generally given the lion's share of the credit for that Cup, but regardless, the 1915 Millionaires were absolutely stacked.

Perhaps it's unfair to MacKay - two-way players seem to be more judged on how they bring in the championships than more offensive players, who can more easily be judged based on their stats.

I've never seen this brought up before, but that's a pretty significant blow to his career missing almost 2 years of his prime because of an on ice attack.

Count me among those who think he has been the best goaltender in the world over the past several seasons due to his consistency at a high level.. but I think you're going to have a tough sell here, mostly because of his lack of NHL team success which goalies seem to need to be taken seriously here.

He missed the entire 1919-20 PCHA season after getting his jaw shattered late in the 1918-19 season by a Suter/Kariya-esque crosscheck to the face that earned the offending player a lifetime ban from the coast league.

How far, if at all, has Mickey MacKay slipped since that fateful night in Seattle when xxxxxx laid MacKay's jaw open with a blow from his stick and brought on himself a perpetual banishment from the Pacific Coast Hockey League.

Never over robust, spectacular in style and always able to uncork a lightning flash of speed in the pinch, MacKay has been, in the eyes of the critics, self-elevated to that position by virtue of repeated seasons at the Arena, an in-and-outer. One night he looks like the star of old, the next he couldn't be seen through the world's largest telescope. Changes in league personnel, the flooding of the hockey market with star players and the general expected revolution in hockey practice now that Vancouver is merged with the Western Canada Hockey League, induced MacKay to do some thinking recently.

When he signed yesterday for another year with the club he has served so long, Mickey expressed a determination to get into first class shape ere the season opened and to stay that way. Perhaps it will be news to many of the close pursuers of the hockey stars to know that last year, in the opening game, MacKay stopped a hard driven shot with his good right thigh. By the time he was in the dressing room it was necessary to cut away his hockey clothes, so badly swollen was the injury. MacKay was not himself again until toward the end of the season. He was used only on the pinch till the series in the east and the final playoff, when he went with much of his old-time speed and abandon.

"I wasn't right last year," Mickey said recently, "and I know it. I couldn't seem to get going. This year I'm starting out early, taking the game seriously and will make an honest endeavor to deliver everything I possess in every game."

If Mickey carries out his preseason promises it may result in a comparative in-and-outer returning with a bang to stardom. MacKay joined Vancouver in 1915, coming here from Grand Forks, where he set the sticks ablaze with his form. MacKay leaped right into the forefront in hockey and for several years was among the league's leading scorers.

Interesting thing about MacKay's career is his postseason performances before and after the shattered jaw:

Before: 11-8-19 in 10 career playoff games (8 Cup finals games and 2 PCHA playoff games)

After: 7-4-11 in 29 career playoff games (16 Cup finals games and 13 Western League playoff games)

*out of fairness, I omit MacKay's NHL postseason stats, as he was past his prime

MacKay's Vancouver teams were actually quite good even after Taylor passed his peak, featuring MacKay, Lehman, a strong defense and a few other good forwards (including a young Frank Boucher). They came out of the PCHA for four years straight from 1921 to 1924, and four years straight lost to the NHL teams they faced, twice going down to the Ottawa Senators. MacKay scored 2-1-3 in those 16 games.

MacKay seems to have been a great player who didn't quite live up to his full potential, for various reasons. His career was nevertheless outstanding, but he was definitely no Frank Nighbor.

He's not on a team that is near good enough to compete deep in 7 game series (NHL playoffs). That's just an easy fact.

I think individual awards is where he'll build any sort of lasting legacy. And obviously there is no guarantee of that. He's been rather average for stretches this season. Time will tell.

It was often said that while Trottier, Bossy, Denis Potvin, Clark Gillies and Billy Smith were considered to be the keys to their success, it was Nystrom and Tonelli who were the heart and soul of the dynastic powerhouse.

It still took John a couple of years to hit his stride at the NHL level, but he always seemed to raise his game in the playoffs.For example, in his second season J.T. scored 14 goals and 44 points, relatively modest numbers. But in the playoffs he erupted with 7 goals and 16 points in 21 games. His last point of that playoff was an assist on the famous XXX XXX overtime goal that clinched the Isles their first Stanley Cup!

For much of his career John was a consistent 30 goal, 65-70 point threat whose real value to the team's success could never be quantified in a statistic.

Tonelli established himself as a digger, someone who could go into the corners and come out with the puck. But as he gained confidence, he also became more aggressive in open ice and began to score more. Not coincidentally, the Islanders also started to win. Tonelli was part of the four Cup victories the team won from 1980 to 1983, but in some ways his career culminated in the fall of 1984 when he played for Canada in the Canada Cup, an invitation he almost turned down.

He not only made the team, he had nine points, including a key assist on Mike Bossy's goal in overtime of the semifinal. Canada won the championship and Tonelli was named the tournament's best player. He then rejoined the Islanders and had his best season ever, scoring 42 goals and 100 points.

Lundquist is a top-notch goalie who should actually be argued for more hart nominations than hes got. Kept the rangers as a contender for many seasons now.

He was 2nd in the league in scoring, first team All-star and awarded the Retro Hart...why is that claim so far fetched?

A retro Hart?! Really?

You want to quantify the offensive difference between them. My "answer" is that doing so is extremely difficult, and that your first attempt was a poor one. I'm not sure if their respective offensive values can be quantified in a coherent way, but I am sure that it would take a lot of work, and I'm not going to be the guy that does it.

edit: you must forgive me mark. You broached this subject at a tricky time. I am working on a large comparison of the various PCHA centermen (Frederickson, MacKay, Foyston and Morris) for the next round of the HOH top centermen project, and digging up old information on MacKay has been part of that process.
