A huge goaltender that is technically skilled. Nilsson has good hockey smarts plays with calmness and has good mental strength. Challenges the shooters and has been very consistent during his career, rarely having bad games. Furthermore, he is athletic and quite agile.

By the sound of his stats he has far more bad days than good...

Hoping a change of scenery is what he needed to get into form.

yeah he was weak. rebound control was bad and for a big goalie he sure seems small when the shots are coming.

He is big .. many holes.. terrible style

When squared up to a single shooter in a non-breakaway situation, he can make a great first save and has decent rebound control.

When asked to move laterally, he drops to the ice way too easily and gets killed on the return pass.

When asked to defend against a deke, he can be beaten pretty easily, and despite his huge frame he leaves massive holes open for shooters with any real skill.

A lot of what is wrong with him can be coached out of his game... but if that was going to happen, you'd think it would have already happened by now. He's going to be 29 before the season ends. What you see is what you get - a naturally gifted athletic goalie with fantastic size who has never been able to, and probably won't ever be, able to think the game at a high enough and intuitive enough level to ever be a reliable long-term starting goalie at the NHL level.

The difference between a good backup and an average starting goalie is consistency. Nilsson doesn't have the vision to be consistent enough as a starter. He'll have just enough good starts to get you excited about what could be, with just enough bad starts to leave you frustrated about what he'll never be.

Nah, it's his season and he'll stand on his head. Three year contract extension incoming :sarcasm:

I find when forced to move he opens up too much ; it looks like several holes open up.

Yep, and they're all above the waist.

Classic early 2000's Roy-wannabe butterfly style. Goes down to his knees when moving across the crease, shooters know it and count on it, and all they need to do is get the puck off the ice and not shoot into the crest.

Deserves credit right now. He's been very very good. Could even give Anderson a run for his money. If he keeps playing like this, he should be our starter next season.

Definitely shakey in his first game and looking much better now. Dorion should not have waited so long to get the team a quality tender.

Do you retract your retract?
That would be a yes.

I just had an immediate reaction to how hilariously bad he was as soon as I posted. I do think he is a better option than everyone not named Anderson in the org. Not a big fan of Anderson either personally but he clearly has had a better track record. I have found Anderson lets in poor hoals at important times this season.
