I don't think the league understands that the older product was better. I don't get why they are so worried about being "legit" as a AA league.

Because what they have now is the better business model.

For them or the fans? I'm not sure its better for either. They are dependent like every league on fans. I think you'd get more overall fans if you had continuity and rivalries then the sale of a Pipedream. The product has grown stale. The affiliation thing was cute for awhile but I think its hit it's peak.

If they leagues wanted league to have names that represent where their teams play

NHL > Major League Hockey
AHL > International Hockey League
ECHL > North American Hockey League
SPHL > East Coast Hockey League

The only one who wouldnt have to change is the FHL

I think the North American Hockey League would take umbrage towards it having its name taken away, though I get you're speaking in a hypothetical sense.
