In 1971, the leafs were a team still trying to rebuild after their last original 6 cup win.

They lost in the quarter finals to the eventual Cup winners that season the Boston Bruins.

The team was comprised of future hall of fame goalie Jacques Plante and future Stanley cup winner Bernie Parent in goal. Plante started the best of 5 series and gave up 4 goals in a 4-0 drubbing. Esposito and Orr at their height of talent and skill, were just too much for the Leaf team and coach John McLellan.

Adjusting for the next game, Parent is put in and the Leafs win. Parent stays in net, and although the scores are closer for the rest of the series, the Bruins prove too much for the Leafs.

The next season Parent is traded. And despite an influx of youth and players like Salming, Turnbull and Lanny McDonald in their rookie seasons the Leafs fail to make the playoffs and the sell off begins. They Trade Rick Kehoe to The Pens. Keon, Henderson, Ullman, Pelyk leave to the WHA

This is what could have been by 1976 if they were a little more patient and the NHL took the WHA threat more seriously.

Errol Thompson - Darryl Sittler - Lanny McDonald
Paul Henderson - Dave Keon - Ron Ellis
Inge Hammarstrom- Norm Ullman - Ric Kehoe

Tiger Williams - Garry Monahan - Pat Boutette

Turnbull Salming
Rod Seiling Carlyle
Glennie McKenny

What great memories those names conjure up for me... I started playing hockey and watching the Leafs around 1974 or so and many of those players were my childhood idols.

Saw most of those players too. Started watching the Leafs around 77-79...gradually until I was 10 in 1980 then pretty much die hard since then. Good thread thanks for the memories.
