Yet in overall point production, aside from one outlier year, Drury scored about the same relative to the leader or #2 as Romnes did. Those assist finishes are misleading fluff.

I have asked you a few times but you never answer - what's more impressive? 4th with 60% of the leader? Or 15th with 70%?

Are you saying he had the most playoff points during a selected period? This is not uncommon, you know. Was his per-game average dominant?

4th is definately more impressive.

He has the most play-off points during his prime. No, the PPG wasn't dominant, but is was very good. During that time, I'd say only Syl Apps and Bill Cowley had better play-off performances.

You're right. Mark Howe needs to be on this team big time. I forgot that Gordie's kids were Americans. Move Phil Housley to the 4th line at even strength, where he can't hurt the team as much with his defensive gaffes (Buffalo apparently used him at forward at times so it isn't unheard of). He can still play on the PP with Leetch.

New team USA:

John Leclair - Mike Modano - Brett Hull
Keith Tkachuk - Pat Lafontaine - Joe Mullen
Chris Drury - Jeremy Roenick - Cecil Dillon
Phil Housley - Neil Broten - Tony Amonte

Extras = Scott Gomez, Bobby Carpenter, Brian Rolston, Zach Parise

Chris Chelios - Mark Howe
Brian Leetch - Rod Langway
Derian Hatcher - Gary Suter
Extras: Kevin Hatcher, Taffy Abel, Dave Langevin, Brian Rafalski

Frank Brimsek
John Vanbiesbrouck (or Tom Barrasso or Mike Richter)

PP1: Leclair - Modano - Hull - Leetch - Housley
PP2: Tkatchuk - Lafontaine - Mullen/Roenick - Chelios - Howe

PK1: Modano - Drury - Hatcher - Langway
PK2: Broten - Dillon - Chelios - Howe

Actually rather surprised not to see Kevin Stevens on your USA team. Not that he'd be a top liner or anything, but he'd definitely be a good 3rd line option to be sure.

Personally I would keep that top 6 intact, move Stevens into the #3 LW spot and bump either Housley or Amonte with Drury in that spot due to his ability on the PK.

I will say good pick on Dillon though, I had forgotten that he even was an American.

another thought experiment might be to come up with rosters based only one guys who played for their countries in the olympics, and count only the players that year (i.e., if you put gretzky on the canadian roster, you get '98 gretzky, not mid-80s gretzky).

i suspect most of the european teams will have lots of guys who didn't play in the NHL, especially russia/USSR. but would the north american teams? does, say, '94 kariya or '92 lindros make the canadian roster? or the "miracle" guys on an all-time team USA?

here goes for canada:

nash ('10) gretzky ('98, C) lemieux ('02, A)
crosby ('10) sakic ('02) iginla ('02)
shanahan ('02) yzerman ('02) lindros ('98)
gagne ('02) toews ('10) fleury ('98)
peca ('02)

bourque ('98, A)* niedermayer ('02)
pronger ('02) macinnis ('98/'02)
blake ('98) doughty ('10)
keith ('10)

roy ('98)
brodeur ('02)
burke ('88/'92)

injury reserves: weber ('10), staal ('10), kariya ('94)

* not allowed to participate in shootouts

You're right about Stevens. I just forgot about him. I'll put him on the 2nd line for chemistry reasons - Lafontaine is kind of like Lemieux-lite and Tkachuk and Roenick actually played together.

I'll move Dillon down with Drury and Broten to form a sort of shut-down line that can take faceoffs in its own zone.

Doc Romnes can be a spare; I really don't see him being that different from Gomez.

New new Team USA:

John Leclair - Mike Modano - Brett Hull
Kevin Stevens - Pat Lafontaine - Joe Mullen
Keith Tkachuk - Jeremy Roenick - Phil Housley
Chris Drury - Neil Broten - Cecil Dillon

PP2: Tkachuk - Lafontaine - Mullen/Roenick - Chelios - Howe

PK1: Broten - Drury - Hatcher - Langway
PK2: Modano - Dillon - Chelios - Howe

Extras = Some combo of Scott Gomez, Doc Romnes, Bobby Carpenter, Tony Amonte, Brian Rolston, Hobey Baker, Kevin Hatcher, Taffy Abel, Dave Langevin, Brian Rafalski

That's a pretty good looking lineup, and while in the all-time sense it falls a bit short, if you had them all playing in their primes, they could probably compete with anyone, except Canada.

With current Olympic rosters allowing you to dress 20 skaters though, you could make Housley a PP specialist, and have Amonte skate a regular shift with Tkachuk and Roenick

Swedish all-time

Sterner - Forsberg - Loob
Mats Näslund - Nilsson - Tumba
Zetterberg - Sundin - Alfredsson
Markus Näslund - Rundqvist - Bengt-Ake Gustafsson

Extras: Hedberg, Jönsson, Bergqvist, Dahlén.

Lidström - Salming
Stoltz - Svedberg
Eldebrink - Waltin

Extras: Samuelsson, Abrahamsson x2, Nordlander, Johansson, Jonsson

Leif Holmqvist
Pelle Lindbergh
Peter "Pekka" Lindmark

I'd probably slot in Lundqvist as 3rd. I'd also rather have Samuelsson than Eldebrink, and the fourthline is a bit weird with Näslund on it. I'd probably swap Näslund and Zetterberg there.

It would have been cool with a pairing of Lasse Björn and Douglas Murray, but they are not really good enough..

I went mostly for what they have doen for the swedish team. Samuelsson havent played much for it and Eldebrink is just a better defenseman. Same with Näslund, he is a energy line type of player when there is players like Sterner, Mats and Z on the team.
