#35 Billy Smith,G-5'10" 185 lbs
His lifetime playoff won-loss record of 88-36 (.710) is second only to Ken Dryden.

For several years, Smith shared the Isles goalie duties with Chico Resch; but in 1980 he finally was given a chance to go the distance in the playoffs, and he delivered a Stanley Cup. Then another the next year. Then another the year after that. His greatest triumph was in 1983, the Isles opponent in the Final was Edmonton and many experts were picking the Oilers take them. Smith had other plans, he totally neutered the Oilers high-powered 400+ goal offence. In a 4 game sweep he only allowed a total of 6 goals with a ridiculous save percentage of .953.
Smith was hated by many fans during his prime for his penchant of whacking his stick at player`s ankles. In his mind it was justified; the crease was legally his area and if a forward was trespassing then Smith would evict him. It was nothing personal- he`d whack his own defencemen if they were screening him. Several people were put off by his refusal to shake hands after beating a team in the playoffs, but he thought the routine was hypocritical.
He devised exercises to keep his reflexes sharp; sometimes he would spend hours throwing a rubber ball against a wall and catching it. Hockey was serious for him. On gamedays he wouldn`t talk to anybody, he`d just concentrate on the game. He simply devoted all his physical and mental energy towards one goal- winning.

#8 Sid Smith,LW-X4B-5'10"177
Some of Smith's many goals were momentous, including an overtime goal in the 1951 Stanley Cup finals against Montreal, a series that featured extra-time thrillers in each of the five games it took for Toronto to win its fifth Cup in six years. He also scored the winning goal in the first televised Maple Leafs game, against the Boston Bruins on November 1, 1952.
A model of consistency, Smith recorded six consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals, achieving that distinction in 1954-55 along with Gordie Howe. Only four others had been so reliable?Cy Denneny, Brian Hextall, Maurice Richard and Ted Lindsay?and Smith led the Leafs in scoring categories for eight seasons, four times for goals and four times for total points. Twice Smith was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy as the league's most gentlemanly player, in 1951, when he cracked the top 10 in league scoring with 51 points, and again in 1955, when he recorded a career-high 33 goals. Three times he was a league All-Star, earning First Team honors in 1955. He played in the All-Star Game in seven of his eight full seasons in the NHL. When Teeder Kennedy retired at the beginning of the 1955-56 season, Smith was elected the team captain, a role he filled with his quiet brand of leadership for one season before Kennedy returned to put the "C" back on his sweater in late 1956.

In 1957-58 Smith retired after Twelve games. At the time of his retirement, only three active players?Howe, Richard and Lindsay?had scored more goals. He was the Leafs' top goal scorer of the decade and was involved in 25% of the team's scoring plays during his highly productive stay.

#94 Ryan Smyth,LW/C-X5B- 6'1"190
Rushes the net like Glen Anderson use to do in his hay day. Goes to the net with ample vigor and scores the majority of his goals due to supreme determination. Is afraid of nothing, energetic warrior who works hard in the corners, strong along the boards will sacrafice his body to finish a play.Has underrated playmaking skills and displays a sound overall game. Was once hit by a car in Banff Alberta. The driver of the car was Edmont Oiler Glen Anderson.Smyth was hospitalized but would be alright; in fact, he was well enough to play for the Oilers seven years later and played with Anderson in the 1995-96 season.

#2 Nikolai Sologubov, D-X2-5' 10"176
Bobby Bauer, coach of the Canadian Olympic team in 1956, said he was good enough to play on any NHL team at that time. Aside from Viacheslav Fetisov, Nikolai Sologubov is often considered the best defenseman in Soviet hockey history. Because of the many changes in the eras the two defenders played in, who is better becomes sort of a generational debate much like Bobby Orr and Eddie Shore in the NHL. Sologubov nearly never played as he was severely injured in combat in WWII. He betrayed doctor's orders and worked his way back to become one of the all time greats.Sologubov, a long time captain of both the Red Army and Team USSR, scored 132 goals in 350 games (only bettered by Fetisov in a more offensive era for defensemen)

#26 Martin St. Louis, RW-X2-5'9"180
A crafty pint-sized sparkplug who can reach warp speed in a few strides, and plays with great determination. With growing confidence and responsibility in all situations, St. Louis really broke out in 2003-04, leading not only his team but the NHL in scoring with 94 points and by doing so captured his first Art Ross and becoming the first collegiate player to lead the league in scoring. St. Louis finished tied for second in the Maurice Richard goal scoring race with 38 goals and finished tied for first in assists with 56. Martin also finished first in the league with a +35 plus/minus rating (tie), and eight shorthanded goals. St. Louis continued his strong play in the post season, finishing second in playoff scoring with 24 points (9-15-24) while helping the Tampa Bay Lightning capture their first Stanley Cup title, with a hard fought seven game series win over the Calgary Flames. Coming off a Stanley Cup win, St. Louis ended his NHL season by winning the Lester B. Pearson award, as the league's top player, as voted by his peers, as well as the Hart Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player.

#12 Pat Stapleton,D-X4B-5'8"180
Whitey" Stapleton was a tremendous defenceman who was able to succeed despite his limitations. At only 5`8" he wasn`t going to push around any forwards physically, but he used his positioning to force them to the outside; he also had one of the best poke-checks in the league. Offensively, his shot was pretty tame, but he was a top-notch playmaker who twice led defencemen in playoff assists and set a record for most assists by a defenceman in a season in `68-`69 (broken by Bobby Orr the following year).
After an 18 month stint with Boston early in his career, he was sent down to the minors where it looked like he would stay; but he worked hard to improve his play and patiently waited for another chance. The chance came in 1965 when Elmer Vasko suffered an injury and Chicago called up Stapleton- he never went back to the minors again. He was a three-time 2nd Team All-Star in the NHL and won the best defenceman award in the WHA in 1974. Most fans top memory of Stapleton was his fine, steady play for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series. Amid the celebrations when Canada won the game, he had the foresight to grab the puck which Paul Henderson scored the historic winning goal with. Stapleton still has the puck to this day.

He was the complete package on defense during his dozen years in the NHL. A devastating hitter, Stewart was at his best in the hardest-fought games. Stewart was also admired for his defensive poise. He rarely miscued in his own zone or neglected his position to take a run at an opposing player. A solid work ethic and excellent stamina were also major features of the rugged defender's game. He was a wiry 185 pounds but extremely powerful. He was key member of two Detroit Stanley Cups and his string of five all-star team selections were only interrupted by 2 years of service in WWII.

Stinchcombe was somewhat of a novelty among hockey players in that his vision was limited - he could only see out of one eye, and yet was able to enjoy an extremely successful career.During his playing career, Archie Stinchcombe was described as being a ‘rugged player with a powerful shot, who rarely got penalised.’ Through out his career, he was used as a specialist penalty killer and had the rare distinction to complete a full season without visiting the penalty box himself.

#9! Hod Stuart, Point/D -X2-6'1" 195
Stuart rose to prominence as one of the greatest defensemen to play the game in hockey's early day. He was as complete a player as there was back in the days of the "onside" game. He could skate, shoot, and make the big play from his point position. He was a clean player who played for keeps. His punishing checks and long reach frustrated his opponents as much as his offensive rushes dazzled the fans. He was with the Montreal Wanderers in March 1907 when they defeated the Kenora Thistles for the Stanley Cup, and was being called the greatest hockey player in the world. Tragically, it would be Stuart's only Cup championship. In the early summer of 1907, he suffered a fatal injury when he struck his head on rocks while diving into the unfamiliar waters at the Bay of Quinte, breaking his neck and being killed instantly

The European Bobby Orr, Jan Suchy controlled games like no other European defenseman before him. His rink length rushes on the ice became legendary back home in Czechoslovakia. Suchy was one of very few defensemen who could get people out of their seats. Although he was a heavy smoker it never affected his fitness. Never before had anyone in Europe seen a defenseman as complete as Suchy. He could do it all. He was a great skater who could set the pace of a game in the same fashion as a Bobby Orr or Doug Harvey. Suchy was virtually a fourth forward on the ice with his fine technique, vision and skating. He not only excelled offensively but did it defensively as well. Suchy was also a master shotblocker who never hesitated to throw his body in front of a shot

#13 Mats Sundin,C/RW- 6'4"228
Captain Mats is a durable elite forward who has an excellent package of size strength and finese He uses his reach to a degree that it is very hard to get the puck from him. Is extremely slick, loves to find the holes and has a wide variety of shots. Consistency is the name of his game. His shot is feared because of its accuracy. He is used in all game situations power play pently killing and is a great faceoffman especially when the game is on the line.

Mats Sundin has gone on to become an ambassador for Swedish sport, unarguably one of the most popular Swedish sportsmen ever. But there was a time when Mats Sundin was banned from Swedish hockey. There was even a time when controversial Swedish Ice Hockey Association boss Rickard Fagerlund promised he'd see to it that Mats Sundin never again played in a blue and yellow jersey because mats left sweden for the nhl.

That was a decade and three World Championships ago. In 1991 in Helsinki, in 1992 in Prague and in 1998 in Zurich, Sundin led the proud Tre Kronor to gold medals in competition with the best the world could offer. He bettered that in 2005 winning a Hockey Gold Medal for his country.

Mats started to play in the NHL on a young quebec nordique squad in the early 1990's.

After being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1994 ,the young Swede became a smashing success. In just one year he rose to stardom in a city well known for its taste for fine hockey and fighting spirit. He won the honor of being named the team's captain, the first foreign captain in the history of the Maple Leafs.

A member of Sweden's Olympic Team in 1998 and again in 2002, Sundin has represented his homeland in international competition a total of twelve times as of the 05-06. In 2002-03, he became the first Swedish born player to reach 1,000 points at the NHL level, continuing his productive ways on the ice for the Leafs in 2003-04, leading the team in scoring for the 10th time.

05-06 Mats suffered asevere eye injury but returned to play 12 games later. When he returned he dawn a visor but his game was subpar and wasn't the pre-lockout player leaf fans had know. Mats was enduring the worse season of his career before the Olympics. He teamed up with Forsberg Alfredsson and Lidstrom and won the Hockey Gold for Sweden. In Sweden he started using a stick given to him by Alfredsson and started to tear up the league. Since the Olympics, Sundin has 14 goals and 12 assists inlcuding nine-game point streak as the surging Leafs challenge for a playoff berth very late into the 05-06 season.

#20 Lennart Svedberg,D-X3-6'O"180"
Svedberg is regarded to be the most talented Swedish defenseman ever. Everybody called him "Lill-Strimma". He was an exceptionally creative defenseman who was a joy to watch. His unpredictable moves and effortless skating made him extremely hard to stop. He was a Paul Coffey type of player in regards of skating and offensive play. He didn't score many goals, but he set up a lot and created havoc in the offensive zone. Tarasov was fascinated by Lill-Strimma's spontaneous rushes and his creativeness

Lill-Strimma represented Sweden 125 times, scoring 16 goals. He was named to the World Championship All-Star team three years in a row (1968-70). In 1970 he was voted as the best defenseman in the World Championships

On July 29,1972 hockey fans received the shocking message that Lennart "Lill-Strimma" Svedberg had died in a car accident, only 28 years old and at the peak of his hockey career.

Those who saw him play will never forget his high speed rushes over the ice that captured fans everywhere. He was a bohemian player and didn't follow any given patterns. It was this unique trademark that made him stand out among the players.

He was a "Michelangelo" on ice

Robert was one ofthe better creative offensive defenceman during his era.He had a great point shot and is a heavy hitter from the blueline. He was adapt to making smooth passes and quick decisions. He played an important role on the power play.

At the age of 25 he was still considered a rookie, but on the ice he didn't look at all like the typical nervous greenhorn. Instead, he became one of the team's workhorses. Former coach Doug MacLean called him the toughest player to come into his hands during his three years with the Panthers. Svehla could get respect in front of the net. As an experienced skater, he cleared space at the net and attacked near the boards just as strongly. But he wasn't getting about 30 minutes of ice time per game for those reasons alone. He brought the Panthers perspective and a talent for clever passing and hard shooting. H e was a premier offensive d-man duuring a very defensive ear.1996-97 Played in NHL All-Star

A left wing who was a two-time WHA MVP and the only player to lead the WHA in goals and assists in a season, which he did twice He played most of his first four pro years with the Montreal Canadiens from 1969 to 1973, developing into a true goal-scorer Habs fans were starting to admire.

It was in the WHA that he played the prime six years of his life, joining the Quebec Nordiques midway through the following season and becoming a provincial hero for all French-Canadians in Quebec. In 1975-76 he signed an unprecedented 10-year contract with the Nordiques, then went out and led the league in goals, assists and points. But in the playoffs he suffered a horrific injury in a game against the Calgary Cowboys. He was charged from behind by Rick Jodzio, who hammered Tardif in the chest and head area with his stick. Tardif fell to the ice unconscious, but Jodzio jumped on top of him and continued to punch him violently.

Tardif suffered extensive damage to his mouth and teeth, but he also suffered a brain contusion that at first threatened his very well being.

Remarkably, he continued to play and score and in 1979, when the Nordiques joined the NHL, Tardif was still playing.

After four more years back in the NHL, Tardif retired a hero in Quebec and was given a proud sendoff. His number 8 was retired by the Nordiques near the start of the 1983-84 season.

#6 Cyclone Taylor,Rover/D/C-5'9" 170! -
Taylor performed exceptionally well at several positions during his legendary career. His dynamic rushes and memorable scoring feats made him one of hockey's first superstars. He was one of the few players in the history of the game capable of skating backwards as fast as many could forwards. The nickname "Cyclone" was first accorded this exciting figure by local reporters after a cartoonist with the Ottawa Journal depicted one of his cyclonic rushes in vivid detail. He broke into hockey as one of the game’s earliest rushing defensemen. When he moved west to the PCHA he switched to the forward position, and there he thrived from 1913 to 1921. While employed on the West Coast, Taylor averaged more than a goal per game in a formidable display of offensive prowess. His second Stanley Cup triumph came in 1915. He scored six goals in the Millionaires' three-game domination of Ottawa in the championship showdown. The sheer magnitude of Taylor's excellence in the series elevated him to the status of hero right across Canada. Taylor won 5 PCHA scoring titles, leading the league in goals 4 times and assists 5 times. He earned the remarkable distinction of being named to the First All-Star Team everywhere he played from 1900 to 1918.

#32 Steve Thomas,RW/LW-X2-5'10" 185
A little clutch scoring in a player who scored 89 game winning goals in his NHL career, on LW
A hard-working, right-winger with good speed and a quick release, Steve Thomas entered the league in 1984-85, he became one the most consistent scorers in the game with nine 20-goal seasons to his credit. Is very intense, fearless, a fine forechecker and the owner of a bullet shot. Works the boards extremely well and adds versatility to the lineup.

After starting the 85-86 season in the AHL, Thomas was recalled to the Leafs and scored 57 points in 65 games. That spring, he scored 14 points in the post-season as Toronto came within a game of reaching the semi-finals.

Thomas battled injuries his first two years with the Hawks before scoring 40 goals in 1989-90. In Oct 1991, he joined the NY Islanders in a trade and helped the club upset Pittsburgh while reaching the semi-finals in 93. Thomas set a career high with 42 goals in 93-94 but slipped to eleven goals during the lockout-shortened season. Prior to the 95-96 season, he joined the Devils where his lower goal totals reflected the defensive system employed by his new club. NHL Totals 1235 421 512 933 +17 Playoff Totals 174 54 53 107 +3

Jimmy Thomson was a rugged defenseman and team leader who spent nearly 800 games in the NHL during the 40s and 50s. In addition to his feisty nature he was a fine passer who often helped his club's transition game by carrying the puck up ice efficiently.

In all, "Jeems" supplied toughness and leadership on the Toronto defense for eleven seasons. He was regarded as one of the league's toughest foes and placed on the NHL 2nd All-Star team in 51&52. He also participated in seven All-Star Games and was an integral part of Stanley Cup wins in 47,48,49 and 51. During the 56-57 season he spent time as the Leaf's captain. Prior to the 57-58 schedule, Jim was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks for cash. The deal was a result of his involvement with Ted Lindsay's attempt to found a player's association

Tikhonov brought hi-tech of the 1970s to the Soviet hockey. He seemed to be the first to use a VCR in the coaching analysis. Maybe it happened because VCRs became more affordable in the 1970s. Other coaches didn't use VCRs to analyze the games. For what? Their notebooks had it all. Tikhonov spent hours rewinding and fast forwarding the tapes. No mistake could be hidden from the camera. There was no way the tape could miss the opponents' tactical secret.

Tikhonov was a king of tactics. Even people who didn't like him accept that there were few (if any) in hockey world that could compete with Tikhonov's tactical vision

#18 Walt Tkaczuk,C-X5-6'0"185
Walt Tkaczuk spent all 945 games of his career with the New York Rangers and was one of the most popular players on the team. The tough New York fans loved Tkaczuk`s tenacitous style of play and the honest effort he gave in every game. Early in his career he twice led the Rangers in scoring, but he found his niche as a checker. He was always assigned to shadow the opposition`s top centre, so while he never hit high point totals again he was a force defensively. Phil Esposito said Tkaczuk did a better job shutting him down than anyone else. Ken Dryden said that Tkaczuk was the one Ranger who always raised his game at playoff time. In the 70s whenever a coach or player was asked who the most underrated player in hockey was, Walt Tkaczuk`s name would always be mentioned.
Although average sized, he was possibly the strongest player in hockey at the time. He played a very physical, yet clean style, and when he bounced a player off the puck it was practically impossible to get it back. Emile Francis compared it to trying to knock over a bull running at top speed. Tkaczuk was a master at ragging the puck, and would frustrate the opposition`s power play by just skating around with the puck for lengthy periods of time on the penalty kill. He was invited to play for Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series, but couldn`t attend due to committments with the hockey school that he ran most summers.

Perhaps the hardest worker and greatest corner man the Islanders team has ever seen. John Tonelli didn't just work a corner. He owned it. His uncanny ability to emerge from every scrum with the puck, arms and legs pumping away full steam, became his trademark-along with his ability to score goals when his team needed them the most. Tonelli knew only one speed and one way to play - all out. Four Stanley Cups, two all-star team appearances, a Canada Cup MVP, Islander records for a left wing that still stand today, clutch goal scoring and most importantly - a work ethic that was second to none. John Tonelli truly achieved his success the old-fashioned way - he earned it.

Being an extremely gifted athlete, Tretiak was rangy, acrobatic and focused a very classy goaltender with an amazing consistency in virtually every game he played for his Red Army Club and Team USSR. Besides his impressive performance in competitions, he was famous for his great ethics and hard work in training. Tretiak was respected by all hockey opponents he had to play against. Despite numerous offers, he never got a chance to play in the NHL. Tretiak captured Olympic gold in 1972, 1976 and 1984, adding a silver at Lake Placid. Besides Czech forward Jiri Holik (two silver, two bronze), he is the only hockey player with four Olympic medals. Throughout his career in hockey, Ian Turnbull was a natural, rushing defenseman and puck-handler who knew what to do in the other guy's end of the rink. He started out in the youth hockey programs of Montreal where he quickly discovered that he was naturally better at the sport than most of the other kids around the neighborhood.

He continued being a superior performer right up the ranks to the junior level where he skated for the Montreal Junior Canadiens and, later, the Ottawa 67's of the OHA from 1969 to 1973. In his final year as an amateur, he skated with Islanders great Denis Potvin Turnbull was picked up by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1973 Amateur Draft. He and the stalwart Borje Salming were teamed together to form one of the more accomplished defensive pairings in the league. All was progressing according to plan until a second-year collision occurred between Turnbull and Blues' enforcer Bob Plager. Turnbull ended up tearing knee ligaments that severely limited his action during the 74-75 campaign.

After a year of healing, he bounced back, establishing himself as a premiere offensively capable rearguard. In 77, however, he slipped into a lengthy scoring drought. He waited until a match against the Detroit Red Wings on the night of February 2 to break free from his malaise. He became the first blueliner to score five goals in one game en route to a 9-1 pasting of the Wings. The record still stands today. He ranks 3rd all time in leafs defensive scoring and holds leafs record for points by defensman in a single season(79 Pts)

The 1980s are not an era that Toronto Maple Leaf fans look back at with fondness, as the team struggled on-ice primarily due to the antics of owner Harold Ballard. However there was one bright spot for the team during this period: Rick Vaive. His hard working, gritty approach, and offensive flair made him a crowd favourite. He was the first Leaf to ever hit the 50 goal plateau, and did it 3 years in a row. As captain, he led by example and was the most popular and respected player on the team.
Vaive was best known for his booming slapshot while streaking down the right wing, but he was hardly a finesse player. Most of his success came from aggressive work along the boards and in the corners, bouncing the opposition off the puck and jostling for position in front of the net. He was one of the league`s top power forwards before the term became commonly used. Early in his career he would be among the team leaders in penalty minutes, until his coaches told him to not play so rough as he was too valuable to spend time in the penalty box

#1 Georges Vezina,G-X3-5'6" 185 lbs.
A man who has awards named after him in multiple leagues, in the "Chicoutimi Cucumber"
One of the elite goaltenders in the annals of NHL history, Georges Vezina was a key figure in the early history of the Montreal Canadiens franchise. His outstanding play served as a model for stand-up goalies in the future. Long after he retired, fans were introduced to his name and his contributions whenever the Vezina Trophy was awarded at the end of each NHL season to the best goalkeeper in the league.

Vezina stood out in the Canadiens' net even though he played in a league that was very offensive-minded and on a team that initially struggled. In addition, goalies were forbidden to fall to the ice to make a save. So, Vezina managed to perfect an early version of the stand-up style of goaltending. A quiet, clean-living man who operated a tannery business in his home town during the off-season, his calm and cool demeanor resulted in his being labeled the "Chicoutimi Cucumber." - HHoF Bio

The Canadiens were a team in transition during the early twenties. Veterans Newsy Lalonde, Didier Pitre, and Loius Berlinquette were moved out, as Dandurand gambled on a youthful forward line for the 1923-24 campaign consisting of rookie Morenz and second-year men Aurel Joliat and Billy Boucher. In what might correctly be labeled as the first instance in NHL history of a goalie carrying a team to greatness on his shoulders, Vezina proved to be the glue that held the club together until they jelled. At midseason of the 24-game campaign, Montreal was a mediocre 4-8, despite Vezina's solid 2.31 GAA. At the end of the regular seaon, Montreal had improved to 13-11, good enough for second place and a playoff spot, while Vezina's 1.97 GAA was the first under 2.00 in league history.

In the playoff opener against favored Ottawa, Vezina turned aside 78 shots for a 1-0 shuout victory, posting a sensational 1.00 GAA while leading Montreal to the Stanley Cup. - Without Fear

"Vezina handled his goal stick with the sterling touch of a Ty Cobb, batting pucks away from his net with supreme confidence and ease. Vezina developed the knack for being able to angle shots into the crowd, deflecting them from danger while keeping rinkside fans on their toes." - Johnny Bower, Without Fear

A gangling six-footer, Vezina guarded the Montreal Candiens' nets when the team played in the National Hockey Association and later for the Habitants when the National Hockey League was organized.

In each mileau, he excelled. The Candiens won the NHA championship twice with Vezina between the pipes and won three NHL championships and two Stanley Cups. He played a total of 373 consecutive games for Les Canadiens in an era when goaltenders' masks were unheard of and was nicknamed The Cicoutimi Cucumber for his birthplace and his cool under fire. - The All-New Hockey's 100

He stood erect in the cage, he was blessed with lightning-quick reflexes& stick-handling skills uncommon among goalkeepers of his day. When the pressure around his net intensified, he often deflected the puck over the glass, because he played on offensively oriented clubs, it as not uncommon to see him playing keep-away with an enemy checker until a teammate came to his aid.- Ultimate Hockey

A defensive specialist RW/D/C in the Islanders first captain, and the scorer of the franchises first goal, in "The Shadow" To a younger generation of hockey fans, Ed Westfall is likely better known for his hockey broadcasting history, mainly with the New York Islanders. But for those who remember hockey in the 1960s and 1970s, Ed Westfall was a successful NHL forward, playing 18 years in the big league.

Westfall's professional career began in 1961 when he suited up for 63 games with the Boston Bruins. He was known as a defensive specialist and the Bruins were not disappointed with what they had. Westfall scored just twice while assisting on nine others in his first year. Westfall's first notable offensive season came in 1964-65, when he managed 12 goals and 15 assists in 65 games. His mandate was to keep the opposition away from Bruins' goaltenders Eddie Johnston and Gerry Cheevers, and he performed that function admirably.

A relatively late bloomer, Bill White developed into one of the game's steadiest defensemen. He was an effective positional rearguard, a very fine bodychecker and impressive puck handler, and was regarded as perhaps hockey’s finest defensive defenseman. It was in the Windy City with defense partner Pat Stapleton, forming one of the top blue line tandems in the league, that White found his niche as a pro. Playing superb defense and making smart offensive plays when called upon, White helped the Black Hawks reach the Stanley Cup finals in 1971 and 1973 and was placed on the NHL Second All-Star Team for three straight years from 1972 to 1974. A high point in his career came when he played seven of the eight games for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series versus the USSR. It was his textbook defense and ability to thwart opposition attacks without ending up in the penalty box that made White such an important member of the blue line corps. In his brief career, White played in 6 all-star games, on 3 Vezina winning defenses, and finished 3rd in Norris voting 3 times.
A rock solid defenseman who played in 6 straight all-star games from 1969 to 1974, and three times finished 3rd in Norris Trophy voting in

Bill White belongs to the list of steady but not spectacular NHL defensemen known for their solid and reliable performance. He was a very fine bodychecker and impressive puck handler. His reliability in defense was recognized with several appearances in the NHL All Star games and found respect of the hockey professionals.

Bill White was one of the best Canadian blueliners of the 1972 Series. Teamed with Pat Stapleton, he demonstrated an extremely steady performance in seven games that he played with Team Canada and earned an impressive "plus 7" at the Summit.

The Seventies – Best Defensive Defenseman – Bill White didn’t reach the NHL until 1967, when he was the ripe old age of 28. He’d spent five years under the brutal Eddie Shore in Springfield. “Some people knock Shore, but he was one of the all-time greats on defense and he certainly taught me a lot,†said White. “He didn’t pay me much but he showed me plenty about playing defense.â€
– Ultimate Hockey

He was developing in Rochester in preparation for a chance to play with the Maple Leafs when a trade sent him to "Eddie Shore's graveyard" in Springfield. Chicago tried to acquire the lanky defender but, as was his style, Shore demanded too much in return. In the meantime, White's mental toughness and defensive game were strengthened as he played under one of the strictest coaches in the history of the game. In May 1967 White finally caught a break when his rights were acquired by the expansion Los Angeles Kings. White went on to demonstrate the benefit of increased roster space for NHL-caliber players.

It was in the Windy City with defense partner Pat Stapleton, that White found his niche as a pro.

White's only goal of the series was a crucial one that tied the score 3-3 in the second period of the eighth and deciding match. It was his textbook defense and ability to thwart opposition attacks without ending up in the penalty box that made White such an important member of the blue line corps.

White remained a pillar on the Chicago defense after his long-time partner Stapleton joined the WHA in 1973. White's career was ended by an injury he suffered during the 1976 quarterfinals versus the Montreal Canadiens. While chasing a puck in the corner, Habs forwards Doug Jarvis and Bob Gainey converged on him, causing White to fall awkwardly into the boards. He was diagnosed with an injury to the cervical nerves route and wasn't able to gain full use of his right arm for months.
- Legends of Hockey Bio

White of course counts game eight as his favorite memory of the series - Henderson's goal and the celebrations. But don't forget the Canadians had to kill off the final 34 seconds of the game following Henderson's goal - 34 seconds which felt like an eternity.

Who was put out on the ice to help kill off the final seconds? Bill White. In fact it was White who relieved the pressure the Soviets were applying late in the game when he flipped the puck high down the ice. White's clearing attempt was perfect, as it was not far enough for icing. That effectively killed off the rest of the game.

An all-heart player, a guy who had two 100+ point seasons in the WHL and one NHL season of 35 goals 62 points in 1980-81 and a trip to the NHL all-star game; he scored 241 NHL goals and 513 points, averaging 40+ points per season over his career. His hands were as talented on offense as they were when taking on the leagues heavy weights.Tiger williams always played the game at full throttle. He is remembered for his pugilistic skills as being one of the strongest enforcers in the history of the game with the NHL record for PIM: 3,966. And another 455 PIM in the NHL playoffs. If you want to find out how great of an all-around player you are, go stand toe-to-toe with some guy 6-3, 230 pounds and then go play the next shift. Not many guys can do that

#1 Gump Worsley,G-X2-5'7"155
Worsley won his first Cup with Montreal in 1965. After helping his team build a 2-1 lead going into game four of the Finals, Worsley got injured and his backup Charlie Hodge lost 2 of 3 games, setting up a dramatic game seven showdown. Despite the injury, coach Toe Blake played Worsley (reasoning that he would be "less nervous" than Hodge). Worsley responded with the best game of his career, completely shutting down Hull, Mikita and the Hawks. He recorded a 20-save shutout and earned his first Stanley Cup.

Worsley also won the Cup in 1966 (helping Montreal come back from a 2-0 series deficit to beat Detroit in 6 games, including a dramatic 3-2 overtime in game six), 1968 and 1969 (another goalie, currently undrafted, takes over midway through the series, despite the fact Worsley won all six games he started).

Worsley led the regular season in save percentage once and the playoffs three times. He was third for the Hart (after Beliveau and Sloan) in 1956. He won two Vezina's and was runner-up twice. He was a first-team all-star once and a second-team all-star once.

#15 Alexander Yakushev,LW-X2-6'3" 200lbs -
In a 16 year career with team CCCP, spanning between 1965-1979, Yakushev played his best hockey between the 1972 Summit Series to the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. This IIHF Hall of Famer is noted for his gentlemanly play, his long / powerful stride, his great play in the slot area and his booming slapshot off of the wing. His name is on the list of all time Russian scorers and has won 3 Russian championships with Spartak. Great offensive instincts, intimidating size and a natural give and go player add to the legend known as "The Big Yak". #66

#25 Peter Zezel, C-X4B-5'11" 200
In Peter Zezel's first NHL season, he established a Flyers rookie record of 46 assists while helping the team to a berth in the Stanley Cup finals. He was quickly regarded as one of the league's premier faceoff men and used his tenacious style to earn himself duty on the penalty-killing unit.

Zezel played a vital role in the resurgence of the Maple Leafs in the early 1990's as a checking centre and faceoff specialist, but he also added his share of timely goals using the soft hands and hard shot developed in his junior days.

Zezel was a face off machine because he studied how an opponent would take their face off and try to exploit their weakness. He would also see the ref's pucking dropping mechanics and try and use this to his advatage and if that didnt work he would tie up the opposition players stick and kick the puck with his feet.

The faceoff is perhaps the most under-appreciated element of the game but on closer inspection it plays a critical role. It’s one of those games-within-a-game that coaches and players zero in on.

“People in the stands don’t take much notice of it, but players do,†says Zezel. “We know how important they are. We know how a game can change on who wins a faceoff. I took a lot of pride in taking faceoffs. I never wanted to chase the puck. The idea was to gain possession and have them chase you.â€

Part of Zezel’s pre-game preparation was to look at tapes of the opponent’s centermen and study their tendencies when taking a draw. Zezel also kept a mental book on each referee and linesman and he studied their mechanics when they dropped the puck.

Zezel had a routine of his own when he was taking a defensive draw. He would skate small circles before taking the faceoff, studying how the opposition had lined up for the draw. He was trying to get a sense of the play the opponent’s were trying to work off the faceoff.

“I would circle (the faceoff dot) to make sure the goalie was ready. When I saw how they were lining up, I’d tell the goalie what I thought they were trying to do. It was important to see how the other team was lining up. You take a faceoff against a left-handed shot you know he is going to try to backhand it to the defenseman for a shot from the point.†- By Alan Adams

Zezel's skills were not only limited to the ice. He saw action with the Toronto Blizzard of the North American Soccer League and the North York Rockets of the Canadian Soccer League.

Zezel was traded by Van to Anaheim in exchange for future considerations on March 23,99, but the trade was voided on Mar 24,99, because Zezel never reported to Anaheim.

Zezel opted to end his NHL career rather than go to Anaheim because his 3-year-old niece Jilliann, the daughter of his sister, was dying from neuroblastoma cancer back in Scarborough, Ontario, and he wanted to spend more time with his family. Zezel's agent Mike Gillis let the Canucks know that he was considering quitting hockey to be with his niece and would only accept a trade to Toronto or Buffalo. Jilliann died on May 16, 1999, but Zezel opted to remain out of the NHL, retiring for the first time that summer. He never came back to the nhl.

He is currently recovering from hemolytic anemia , a rare disorder in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. Zezel was diagnosed with the condition in the summer of 2001. A side effect of the medication is weight gain.

He has had two bouts of this blood disease one attacked his red blood cells the other attacked his white blood cells.

"I’m just taking it easy now. I can’t get too worked up because that seems to trigger it. I’m really taking it easy."

Zezel was anything but laid back during his 15-year NHL career that included two tours with the Blues, 1988-89 and 1989-90, and 1995-96 and 1996-97. In 873 career games, he scored 219 goals and 389 assists for 608 points. He also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks

Zezel is also working with former NHLers Bill Berg and Mark Osborne on a scouting website for players (www.playerprospect.com). The site allows teams from across North America to discover players who fly under the radar screen and track their progress

Peter played 873 NHL games scored 219 goals and tallied 608 career points

Career Highlights:Played in over 1000 NHL games, Holds flyers record for assists by a rookie,Went to the Cup finals with the flyers twice, On Jan16, 1991 Peter realized a childhood dream and got traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He helped lead the leafs to the conference finals twice
