- QUOTES -

JON COOPER:
"The first game (Volkov) played, he scores two that don't count, but they're right around the net. That first one he got tonight, right around the net. The second one he got tonight, going to the net. I think probably in the end, that's what has drawn him to us. That's a good trait to have because that's kind of a trait you don't teach. You can tell guys all you want, 'Go to the net. Go to the net.' A lot of guys don't do it, and he's come in here a couple days and done that. So that's probably the impressive part about him."

"Most of those players, it was either their first or second pro game ever. And so I think nerves come into it. There were so many things that come into it. Every game we've played, we've gotten better as the game went on. We had a really young lineup in tonight. You can't really sit here and expect these guys for what they did in junior all of a sudden to come to a NHL preseason game and do the same thing. It's an entirely different league. You want to see improvement, and that's what we saw as the game went on. So, it was good."

Better shot at quality players tonight or Thursday? I'm going to head down for 1 of the 2.

Eh - I prefer watching the prospects and players looking for a shot, honestly. I don't really care to see Stamkos and Kucherov play 12 minutes and coast.

And I think Peca has been sent down.

Have the Panthers been streaming their games? I'd rather not set up an alarm at 2:30 AM just to go back to sleep again.

I'm excited to see who gets iced tonight. If the Panthers roll a more complete lineup then it'll make for better competition for guys like Volkov and Sergachev and it'll give us a better assessment of them. I'm really pulling for some changes to the roster and by the looks of things both would be welcome additions to the team.

As far as I'm concerned we can move on from the likes of Paquette or Brown or possibly even both. We've twice tried and failed against Stanley Cup Champions in Pittsburgh and Chicago and both times we fell short because our big scorers had a few bad nights and there was little to no scoring depth within the lineup to bail us out. It's time for us to fight fire with fire by responding with better depth. I pray Jon Cooper has realized by now that we are not gonna get anywhere with things staying the way that they are.

A more experienced Point, Kunitz, a healthy Callahan, Conacher and someone potentially like Volkov could be the difference between winning and not winning it all this year.

If it means saying goodbye to someone like Brown or Paquette then so be it.

Kind off topic but does anyone know if Florida has been streaming their games?

Yes they have.

Edit: I guess it could be they just used our stream as the game was in Tampa. So actually no clue if they will cover it from their arena tonight.

Good to see that Strålman might make his pre-season debut tonight and I guess playing him with Sergachev is to get another look at how Sergachev play with different guys since he's now played with several of them.

As much as I hate splitting up Hedman-Strålman (even if I understand the reasoning) I think the Sergachev-Strålman pair could be really good. Stråls might just be the perfect mentor for Serg if the kid stays with us, even if just for the max 9 games allowed before going down.

If he gives us a better chance to win games than alternatives, he'll be here, draft pick or not.

This could mean Volkov's getting a legit chance to make the team.

How crazy that a few months ago this was The Mystery Man. Now he might actually make the team straight from the draft.

Really cheering for him. Biggest reason to watch tonight is to see if he can keep up the good work while surrounded by NHLers.

Hedman AND Dotchin scratched??? Ooooo, so Sergachev and Strålman will probably be the top pairing. Then Coburn-Sustr and Koekkoek-Girardi. This could be FUN! :D

Can't believe that Volkov is still in the mix!! He might just pull off a Point and crash the roster. :yo:

Oh, please let the Panthers streaming work here in Tampa!!

Can't believe Volkov has gone from 'who the heck is that guy' to dark horse to not only make this team, but be in the top 6.

I'm not entirely surprised about Volkov. If you're a skilled Russian player we are going to find you and take you. Everything is making sense now as to when we took him.

Impressive feat for any rook. Especially being able to do that on a contender is even more impressive. Hope he sticks. We need some hungry players.

If you're not entirely surprised that a kid drafted in the second round, just four months ago, has a chance to make a frikkin Jon Cooper team out of camp, I think you're lying. Russian or not, we have no precedent for this.

I'd point out he is an overager - this wasn't his first draft eligible year. Still insane though.

This kid is not 18 straight out the draft though. This kid is 20 ... same age as Drouin and Point when they broke the lineup. Sergachev would actually be more impressive making it as a 19 year old.
