With JJ, I'm just going to accept him as a PK and shootout specialist who can play bottom six minutes for now. At this point, I still don't see production from him, and it's been his lack of production in the past that has hampered him from becoming a top six forward. When I see JJ produce consistently in the regular season, I'll begin to regard him as a top six forward. Until then, he has a role on the team, but I don't think it's as large as we would've hoped when we drafted him.

380 forwards have played over 1,000 ES minutes since 12-13. Josefson is DEAD LAST in even strength scoring. That's an unheard of level of futility - Josefson has been worse offensiely than Manny Malhotra, Zac Rinaldo, Brandon Bollig, Dan Cleary and Jarred Boll. All of those players would also see their point totals increase if given a greater role - it doesn't mean they should be given it.

We'll certainly know better by season's end, I just see no reason to expect anything from JJ at even strength.

Not debating the stats, his ES production is horrible....but he has a clear set of raw skills (to the eyetest), much more than Manny Malhotra did, or Boll, at least in my view. Just something else can't put it to use, probably as you said maybe his tactical insticts are poor, although he reads the defensive game well.

They shouldn't be "given it", its just I feel he has a lot more to offer, skillwise, than as a 4th liner. We'll see how this season shakes out.

JJ had about 3 passes i can think of last night that let to great chances and could very well had 3 points.

He has the stick still to be a good PP QB from the hlaf wall. He feed Severson 2 very good cross ice passes during 1 of the PPs.

He will not likely be a get 5v5 player. But as long as he can play D and play on the PK and PP he had value.

When you have Pete DeBoer telling you to carry it to the boards for 3 years and scratching you if you don't, you're not going to change overnight

If he did in fact say this, or anybody told a center to play along the boards, they'd have been fired on the spot.

Interested to see where Pete said this. Until then, it's just more of blaming the coach just because, without anything to support it or thought put behind it.

I can't really blame Pete for JJ's performance when there hasn't really been any improvement yet. He's basically the same player now as he was under Pete. He just gets more ice time, but he has yet to improve his production.

JJ isn't like Larsson, whose performance has a clear Pete and post-Pete demarcation and who basically was ready for top pairing minutes as soon as he was given a chance with a new coaching staff. I wish JJ was like Larsson and Pete was to blame, but it doesn't look like it.

JJ might just be a case where he is what he is: bottom six forward adept at killing penalties and in the shootout. We might have wished for more, but I don't have the impression that we're going to get it at this point.

Josefson is 24 years old and I would think if he was going to produce we'd have seen something from him by now. I'm perfectly fine with keeping him as a bottom six, PK, shootout specialist (although I think goalies are eventually going to catch on to his one move).

Pretty much this. There's no need to get rid of him, but I don't think we're going to get much more out of him than what he's showing now. He is what he is as far as I'm concerned. What he is isn't bad, although we might have hoped for more.

Josefson now looks much better then he did at any point under DeBoer. He's playing with confidence and swagger he never had under DeBoer.

He doesn't really have one move though. He has one way he comes in and many different moves off of that. Similar to how Kovalchuk always came in the same way and he either shot, went backhand, or faked the shot and went forehand.

I'd love to be wrong and see Josefson improve a lot, but I just don't expect it at this point. if confidence was his issue, then we will probably see an uptick in his production soon. If something else is his problem, we might not see such an improvement. One thing about this season is we will definitely find out one way or another exactly what JJ can offer.

Small sample size, but so far he has 2 assists in 6 games. He's producing and on the power play, he's had a couple of noticeably good shifts on the half-wall.

He didn't exactly show too much in a top six role, but I thought he's looked solid every since he's been put down to the third line. Him, O'Neill, and Tootoo created some nice chances last night.

Could of had more. I think it was the San Jose game where he pretty much had the game won in OT. Just couldn't bury it.

Did everything else beautifully. Created space, got in front, he just couldn't roof it.

I think JJ is quite similar to Frans Nielsen. Good all-around player, PK, shootout specialist... Nielsen didn't have any NHL success until age 25-ish, and I'm hoping/waiting for JJ to turn into a similar player for us.
