Bobby Hull - Adam Oates - Brett Hull
Michel Goulet - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jari Kurri
Bob Gainey - Jean Ratelle - Alexander Maltsev
Brian Sutter - Dale Hunter - Brian Bellows

extra: Doug Jarvis

Victor Kuzkin - Vitali Davydov
Gary Bergman - Mike Ramsey
Craig Ludwig - Carol Vadnais

extra: Sergei Gonchar

Jacques Plante
Grant Fuhr

extra: Gerry Cheevers

penalty kill unit #1: Jarvis-Gainey-Ramsey-Ludwig
penalty killl unit #2: Hunter-Kurri-Davydov-Bergman

powerplay unit #1: Oates - Goulet - Hull - Gonchar - Kuzkin
powerplay unit #2: Ratelle - Hull - Maltsev - Ramsey - Vadnais

TEAM COMPETITIVE STRENGTHS:

(1) Superior set of wingers. Hull, Hull, Kurri are arguably three of the Top-5 all time. Gainey is the best defensive winger, Goulet and Bellows together add another 1000 NHL career goals, Maltsev is as skilled a Russian winger as ever played, and Sutter is indisputably one of the hardest working grinders in the history of the game.

(2) Solid, deep goaltending. Injuries or a cold spell won't derail any team with Plante, Fuhr, Cheevers in the stable.

(3) Great defensive defensemen. Ludwig, Bergman, Davydov. With Ramsey usually in the role, though he was offensive too.

(4) Proven chemistry. Jarvis-Gainey were legendary together as a shutdown duo. Oates-Hull clicked like very few offensive duos have. Goulet scored three consecutive 50+ goal seasons with Hunter as his centre. Kuzkin-Davydov were one of the best Soviet defensive pairings ever.

TEAM COMPETITIVE WEAKNESSES:

(1) Offensive defensemen. Gonchar is the NHL blueline scoring leader the last five seasons combined but he's not strong enough defensively to play much more than the powerplay and the occasional offensive face-off situations late in the game when behind a goal. Ramsey has a great first pass but doesn't press offensively. Kuzkin isn't known for his shot from the point and Vadnais has great puckhandling yet again is more of a passer than a finisher. The powerplay will be fine with Gonchar, Hull, Hull, all able to man the point for a hard shot. But the team cannot score much off of the set up in the offensive zone. A lot of goals will have to come on rebounds, or from the slot or off of passes to forwards in deep, rather than from the point. That's fine. But it will require attentive coaching to adapt the style of play.

(2) Legendary centres. Oates' passing and Hunter's tenacity can match anyone's, but after that, other aspects of the position are better represented on some other drafted teams. Nieuwendyk's aggressive play around the net and Ratelle's skating will occasionally outshine the opposition's, but there is no total package in the lineup of the Cambridge Tabs at centre ice. The centres drafted are expected to thrive in combination rather than isolation, as members of units (Oates-Hull, Hunter-Goulet, Jarvis-Gainey) and with enough defensive acumen to almost hold their own against the opposition's best (though players like Kurri, Gainey and Sutter may have to take some of the workload especially on turnovers and transitional play).

Guy Lapointe GP 884 G 171 A 451 PTS 622 PM 893
1st Team All-Star (1) - 1973
2nd Team All-Star (3) - 75, 76, 77
Stanley Cups (6) - 71, 73, 76, 77, 78, 79
He was a solid checker and opposing goalies feared his slapshot, which was particularly effective on the Habs' lethal powerplay. Being a solid two-way player was something he worked hard on throughout his career.

Fred "Cyclone' Taylor PCHA GP 130 G 158 A 104 Pts 262
194 goals in 186 games
Art Ross (PCAHA) (5) - 14, 15, 16, 18, 19
1st All-Star (PCAHA) (5) - 14, 15, 16, 18, 19
Stanley Cups (2) - 09, 15
Goals (3) - 14, 18, 19
Assists (5) - 13, 14, 15, 16, 19

He earned the remarkable distinction of being named to the First All-Star Team everywhere he played from 1900 to 1918.
