SCOTT AND LOGAN GRUHL EARN ECHL FATHER/SON DISTINCTION

19 Jul 2023
By Joe Babik

Referee Logan Gruhl was a part of history when he skated on to the ice for Game 1 of the 2023 Kelly Cup Finals in Boise on June 3. Even if he didn’t realize it at the time.

Gruhl’s father, Scott, played in the 1995 Riley Cup Finals, helping the Richmond Renegades capture the ECHL title, making the Gruhls the first father/son player/official combination to both participate in the Finals in the ECHL’s 35-year history.

Scott Gruhl played the final two of his 17 pro seasons in the ECHL with the Richmond Renegades from 1994-96.

“It’s a huge honor,” Gruhl said. “I didn’t even really think about it to be honest with you until we were talking about it in Florida after the series ended. Obviously knowing my dad’s playing career and how accomplished he was, it’s awesome to be able to share this accomplishment with him.” ...

Of all the lists, the Qualifying Offers is the most important. A team who qualifies a player maintains that player's rights for the entire 2023-24 season.
Fair enough. So it means a half-bupkis more than the season-ending rosters.

It actually means quite a bit, especially now that the UHL and CHL are gone. While there was an agreement between the ECHL and those two leagues to honor each other's player contracts, a player who's rights were held by a team but was unsigned by that team could sign in the UHL or CHL. There were options.

Now, if an ECHL team makes a player a QO and he doesn't want to go back, he has four choices: get traded, get an AHL deal, go to the Sorta Professional Hockey League, or go to Europe.

Otherwise, it's back to the ECHL team that holds his rights. There's only one Double-A league now (and really, there always has been. The CHL and UHL weren't nearly the same level as the ECHL), so if you want to play Double-A and a team holds your rights, they hold the leverage.

ECHL preseason game in Idaho Falls. Idaho vs Utah. Personally I think an ECHL team in Idaho Falls makes sense if the league is looking to add more teams out west. 4 team division with Boise, Salt Lake, IF and Tahoe. Maybe revive Fresno for a 5th team? Full disclosure I live in Idaho Falls and, while I'm grateful for the NCDC team, I'd love some higher level hockey out here. If the fans keep selling out the 4,000 seat arena I could see NAHL moving in or as previously stated ECHL. I'll keep dreaming.

So it seems you've got the "exciting match up" fever. Happy Hockey!

It costs $3M/year, approximately to operate an ECHL team. Sixty percent, often more, of the revenue comes from ticket sales.

To make $1.8M (60% of $3M), you need $50K in revenue for each of the 36 home dates, which is 4,000 tickets at $12.50 each - provided there are no comps. You'd also need to get $1.2M in sponsorship/trades to break even.

Idaho Falls has a population of 66,000, and roughly double that in the surrounding area. Between a low population and high travel costs, it wouldn't work in the ECHL.

Might work in the NAHL where they can exploit child labor don't have to pay the players, though.

They’re doing $20 a pop for junior hockey and fill 95% of (gak) Hero Arena.

Plus it’s a bigger market than Rapid City, and that’s before you consider Pocatello for being at most 40 minutes away. (Without Pocatello, it’s bigger than CrazyEddie represents)

But they’d probably try to match Boise ticket prices, and that would be, eh, interesting

I mean, OK, Rapid City's had hockey for a while. But has the team ever broken even? I doubt it - even with sold out crowds. Cities that small just don't have a large enough population nor the sponsorship base to draw from to make it financially viable.

Of course, financial viability is in the eye of the beholder. If you're willing to lose $3 million a season, you don't have to sell any tickets or sponsorships at all!

Ice time in North America couldn't hurt, and it might just get her a sniff from the new PWHL. Meanwhile, she'll put a few more butts in seats in K'zoo during and maybe after her stay in town. Win for both parties.
I hope so 🙏
