Simple enough.

What do you think the opening line-up looks like come next Fall?

We don’t know obvious “What ifs?” like Bergeron coming back if they don’t win the Cup.

So, those who want to play this little game, speculate away with different scenarios.

And for those not quite ready to think about it, feel free to ignore and move along!

Edit:

@goldnblack contest rules:
Welcome to the first ever GUESS THE OPENING LINEUP contest for next Bruins season, 2023-2024. You are listing who you think the Bruins 23 man roster will be on opening night.

To simplify things, you don’t absolutely need to work with the cap, because Don has to. If you manage to guess all 23 players, then it means you’re cap compliant.

Feel free to list salaries beside the UFA/RFA new contracts, because we’ll use those for tie breaks in the unlikely event a dead tie.

You can submit answers right up to the last game of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

I could see bergeron back, with another 1/4 deal, effectively eating the bonus money from this year, Krejci retires, that one feels like a swan song. Zacha slots into the 2C spot.

I would not be surprised to see Beturzzi and Orlov resign, Hall moved at the draft, Coyle perhaps moved? Idk, Gryz would likely be moved then as well.

Biggest question is are Lauko and Zboril still on the roster at the seasons end and was reilly kept and bought out

Moving out Gryz, Coyle and Hall = 14,937,500

also a shit ton of ELCs in the roster?

Marchand - Bergeron (1x1) - DeBrusk
6.125 - 1 - 4

Bertuzzi (4x5.25) - Zacha - Pastrnak
5.25 - 4.75 - 11.25

? - Frederic (2x2.15) - ?
? - 2.15 - ?

Greer - ? - Lauko(2x950k)
762k - ? - 950k

?

Orlov (4x6.5) - McAvoy
6.5 - 9.5

Lindholm - Carlo
6.5 - 4.1

Forbort - Zboril
3 - 1.137

? - ?

Ullmark - Swaman (2x2.5)
5 - 2.5

Dead Cap: 4.65 Million in Bonus $ and 333k for Reilly Buyout

=75,595,834 or 7,904,166 Space for finishing the roster

part of the reason Bertuzzi was moved is because he's apparently looking for big money. I don't think 5.25 gets it done.

Marchand - 6.125 --- Bergeron 2.0 --- Pasta - 11.25
Hall 6.0 --- Zacha 4.75 --- JDB - 4.0
Frederic - 1.9 --- Coyle 5.25 --- Lysell .895
Merkulov - 925K --- Beecher 925K --- Greer 750K

Orlov - 4.25 --- McAvoy - 9.5
Lindholm 6.5 --- Carlo 4.1
Lohrei - 925K --- Clifton 2.75

Ullmark - 5.0
Swayman - 1.75

Comes in with about 800K to spare according to capfriendly

Grzelcyk, Forbort, Zboril traded for picks and futures
Krejci retires??

Positives --- hopefully this is the team that sees the banner raised in October
---- infusion of youth

Minuses -- Fantasy exercise --- LOL
Obviously I'm hoping against hope that Clifton will come back here for 2.75 x 3 and Orlov for 4.25 x 3
Still no true #1C in the pipeline

Hmm this is good. I need a day to think on this.

But my lineup won't have 37 or 46. Gonna look very different. We'll also be cup champs :)

I love Lohrei as a prospect, but I would be surprised if he is in the opening night lineup next year. Maybe by later in the season.

But i bet they can also go find a decent defenseman to eat 12 -14 min a night for cheap in the postseason.

No way is Swayman down around 1.75 million. He has argitration rights. I would think he gets a minimum of 2.5,

This is decent, but I think we have to let Clifton walk and use that money for a cheaper 3RD + a 13th forward and 7th D. They won't go into the season without some injury backups.

Fair enough -- There are a lot of variables. Maybe Foligno will stick around for league minimum to play 4 LW?

Maybe Krejci doesn't retire?

Either way --- the roster will be very different next year.

Here's my question for you. You can only keep 1 of these. Who would you keep:

Swayman
Orlov
Bertuzzi

Might be how that goes...

That I absolutely agree with. Honestly I'm not likely to add a lineup here just because
1) not worried about next year right now

2) Absolutely sure anything I try to suggest would be wrong, as the only thing i know is things are gonna look a lot different

I'll do anything to avoid the paperwork that's staring at my right now.

I think 46 and 37 are gone. I am not sure about 37. Everything I read speculates that he returns. However, nobody can know at this point. Either Grz or Carlo are gone, probably Grz for a 2nd or something. They will try to trade for a 2c and play him as a 1c....Your guess is as good as mine as to whom.

OK, @smithformeragent, it appears you've offered me a job as a GM. BUT you technically didn't specify when and for how long. So, I will accept your offer to be GM of Boston starting tomorrow at 3:01PM EST. I'm hoping against hope that I win the Cup for all of you later this Spring/Summer. After which I will immediately retire, and leave 2023/24 to my less accomplished successor!

All kidding aside, I'd need some real time to think this over. Not an easy job at all. Probably beyond my capabilities, if I'm honest.

Btw make this thread a contest like we do for trade deadline.

Gotta enter before final playoff game of the year. Be a really fun one.

Most players right wins, with cap totals as an (unlikely) tie break.

I really wonder if being the captain for the 100th Bruins team has any pull on Bergy?

Obviously, health and what happens this spring may have an effect as well.

Write up the rules you propose and I’ll be happy to edit the OP to reflect them!

What do you think of this draft? I went for ease of participation

Works for me. I’ll amend the OP. We can always tweak if need be and people who already posted can resubmit if they’d like.

What I'm trying to understand is the cap and $4.5m in bonuses for Bergeron and Krejci that can bleed into next year.

Capfriendly says this: "At the end of the season, if the team does not have enough cap space to cover the earned bonus, the difference will be applied as a carryover performance bonus overage penalty the next season."

Question is: The Bruins have around $3.5m in LTIR space right now. Can that money be used for those bonuses to open up a lot more space for next year? That would be the difference between keeping/losing Bertuzzi or Orlov or someone else.
