So far, there are 29 games on the schedule for Lindenwood. "Rubber Stamp Rick" Zombo fancied himself a Division I coach and he's quickly going to find out how much higher the level of play is in real college hockey with series at Minnesota and Michigan to open the season. With four games in Alaska, they could add as many as nine more games to the schedule.

Panel approves changes to video review challenges in ice hockey

Unsuccessful reviews could lead to a lost timeout or a two-minute minor penalty

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a significant overhaul to the video replay process in men's and women's ice hockey effective for the 2022-23 academic year.

In the new process, coaches may challenge a reviewable play. If the play is not reversed, a timeout will be charged for the unsuccessful challenge. Any subsequent unsuccessful challenges would result in a minor penalty for delay of game.

Committee members think the previous process created significant issues with game flow and put unnecessary pressure on officials to review plays without a formal challenge being made. Previously, teams that lost a challenge could not formally request another. ...

DI Board of Directors adopts student-athlete benefit legislation

Transfer package to be revisited later this month

The Division I Board of Directors adopted the first group of Transformation Committee recommendations aimed at allowing schools to provide more benefits to student-athletes. While generally supportive of elements of the transfer package, the board took no action on changes to transfer rules during Wednesday's meeting.

Schools now are empowered to support student-athletes in a variety of ways without asking for waivers, including providing support needed for a student-athlete's personal health, safety and well-being; paying for items to support a student's academic pursuits; purchasing insurance of various types (including loss-of-value and critical injury); and funding participation in elite-level training, tryouts and competition. The benefits proposal is effective immediately. ...

UMaine is hiring for one of nation's lowest-paid hockey coach positions

by Larry Mahoney, Bangor Daily News
Thursday, August 4th 2022

ORONO (BDN) -- University of Maine athletic director Ken Ralph has a tall order when he and his search committee look to hire a new women’s ice hockey coach.

Not only does he have to replace former head coach Richard Reichenbach and his top assistant coach, his wife, Sara, who both resigned last week for undisclosed reasons.

But the new coach will be one of the lowest paid in Hockey East — and in the country.

The university intends to raise the salary for the new coach to try to close the gap between UMaine and the rest of the Hockey East schools. The school will have to make a significant investment to bring the salary in line with that of its competitors, as most head coaching positions at UMaine are among the lowest paid in their respective conferences. ...

BDN isn't Sinclair Communications, JM..... It's the Bangor newspaper, since Bangor is the major city close to Orono, where the University is based.... WGME is based in Southern Maine as well... WABI 5 is the local outlet that covers and telecasts or simulcasts Maine Athletics outside the market.... Larry has being assigned for years to cover the university by the BDN....

it's like the Press Herald and the Sun Journal, who are now under the same ownership under Maine Today Media

RPI Coach Smith Gets New 5-Year Deal

CHN Staff Report

TROY, N.Y. — Rensselaer coach Dave Smith has signed a five-year contract extension, taking him through the 2026-27 season.

Smith has actually been working without a contract at RPI since it expired at the end of last season. The school has been going through a transition to a new president, which delayed getting a new deal done until now. ...

Smith, who is entering his fifth season, has led the Engineers to increased win totals every year, including 18 last season. The team did not play in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last season, RPI won a first-round series in the ECAC Tournament. ...

A native of Arthur, Ontario, Smith graduated from Ohio State in 1992, where he played four seasons. He was captain as a junior, and as a senior led the Buckeyes with 41 assists and 63 points. He went on to spend six seasons in professional hockey, primarily in the International Hockey League, where he was part of a 1993 Turner Cup Championship with the Fort Wayne Komets, and the American Hockey League.

Smith should have been locked up before his contract ended, but Shirley Jackson and Lee McElroy don't know how to run their school's marquee athletic program with a semblance of competence. At least he got a deal done. He's got the potential, if the admissions office will work with him a little bit, to win his way into a better job the way Greg Carvel did at St. Lawrence.

OSU and Michigan at First Energy Stadium in Cleveland… wonder what the tickets will run for that? I know Notre Dame has done this in the past, I believe at Soldier Field vs Minnesota. Anyone go to that game? How much were the tickets?

According to this USCHO.com list of outdoor college hockey games, Notre Dame has played in two such games: facing off against Miami-Ohio in the Feb. 2013 Hockey City Classic @ Soldier Field in Chicago; and hosting Michigan @ Notre Dame Stadium in January 2019.

I found an ESPN article citing sale of $50 student tickets for the Minnesota vs. Wisconsin half of the 2013 event in Chicago. I also saw web evidence of ticket prices of $20 & $80 for the 2019 outdoor game @ Notre Dame. I presume the latter were prices available to students (and maybe alumni) per the typical NCAA team allocation scheme. Face values for admission would have increased since the 2019 event, and pricing would be influenced by the venue's financial structure & presumed demand for tickets. But it would appear that bargain prices could be yours if you have an association with one of the participating teams. Good luck.
