Can anyone come up with a top 20 between 2018 and 2019..

For example

1. 2018 Rasmus Dahlin
2. 2019 Jack Hughes
3. 2018 Andrei Svecnnikov
...
20. 2019 Ryan Suzuki

I am hearing 2019 is a stronger Draft ... If we rank the top 20 between the 2 how does it look? I know that it can be harder to project the 2019 players but give it a shot.

This will be very interesting to see. Don’t want to try myself but if it will help anyone, here’s some top names off the top of my head (sorry, pretty much only know NA players for 2019).

2018: Dahlin, Svechnikov, Zadina, Boqvist, Hughes, Tkachuk, Dobson, Wahlstrom, Bouchard, Smith, Veleno, Farabee, Denisenko, Kupari, Hayton.

2019: Hughes, Turcotte, Byram, Knyazev, Newhook, Foote, Dach, Krebs, Cozens, Suzuki, Poulin, Parent, Lavoië, Warren, Vlasic, Kappo, Kapponen (sp?), Soderstrom.

I’m really interested in the potential of this thread, so if I have to get my list torn apart to facilitate it’s growth, so be it. So much will change, but here goes:

Dahlin
Hughes
Svechnikov
Byram
Newhook
Zadina
Turcotte
Knyazev
Cozens
Vlasic
Boqvist
Suzuki
Dobson
Hughes
Wahlstrom
Tkachuk
Krebs
Bouchard
Lavoië
Smith

HM: Denisenko, Foote, pretty much everyone, y’know?

To be open, I’m biased to NA (especially Canada) because of who I regularly view and am pretty low on Tkachuk.

So hard to do this, when there is such a big jump between 16 and 17 year old seasons. I think I like the depth (especially among the WHL centers) of 2019 more. But, 2019 obviously requires significantly more projection.

Please take a shot!
I personally don't think I've seen enough of certain players to even attempt it. I'd need to really up my WHL viewings on the year (its pretty bland for 1st rounders this year). I really like someone like Kirby Dach for example in my viewings of him, Cozens and Krebs. But, I also see things that could scare me if they continue into his older years. He's a big kid, which tends to lead to taking awhile to fill out core strength and I think he's a bit too passive. But, he has a strong shot when he uses it, and great vision. I would hope he can add that level of explosiveness. He could easily be viewed like Nolan Patrick, RyJo, Monahan, or D. Strome, in a years time. Or he could notably drop.

I wouldn't take Hughes over Dahlin at the moment, because I'm skeptical of his ability to remain at center, but I do think as a forward, he might have a safer projection as a Patrick Kane type player than Dahlin does of reaching top 3 defender in the league.

Damn, I keep thinking about my list, and how the hell I could keep Poulin and Pelletier off of it. Tons of talent coming to the league soon!

Yeah, I remember everyone hyping up 2018 so much last year and saying how weak the 2017 draft was. Well 2017 is looking pretty solid so far.

I'd much rather have a top-15 pick in this draft than in 2017. Seems about the same quality the rest of the way.

I'm joking of course, but the only one I can really remember it not being true for was the McDavid draft.
Are you serious? It absolutely isn't true for the 2016 draft. Matthews was hyped as the best thing since sliced bread and Nolan Patrick was described as a second line center.

On topic, I'm really not sold on Dahlin being better than Hughes at all. Not sure where that comes from.

It's not just about 1st and 2nd overall.

It's the entire first and second round.

I can agree that MOST times it seems like people are drooling over the next year's draft vs the current one.

I have a hard time putting a defender over an elite center - it will be interesting to see how Hughes evolves next year and see which route he takes to play

Its part of the reason I started the thread. I have heard more than once next year is stronger.. (Sens predicament causing some interest) ... If it is stronger .. there has to be some rationale behind believing that and with the difficulty there is in projecting the top 10 2019 and rating them against 2018 , its hard to give a lot to the belief that 2019 is arguably stronger . As someone said if you look at 2 rounds but .. to me that projection would be quite a bit more difficult. I really appreciate that some people are giving it a whirl .. I know its hard and very subjective. Hopefully we get some more people trying it.

I have heard pretty regularly that 2019 is a better year. More star power, equal if not better depth and the 1st 15 are loaded with talent.

And oh by the way, I’m pretty confident that Dahlin will be a top pairing defender but this generational player nonsense gets thrown around way too casually by the guys on NHL Network. I expect him to be on par with a guy like Ekblad, maybe with a little more offense or perhaps similar to Seth Jones. But for everyone who thinks they are about to see the next Lidstrom or Neidermayer, don’t hold your breath.

Jack Hughes is another great player in the making with that crazy hockey IQ and skating combo but if he plans on playing center in the NHL, he’d better figure out a way to throw on 30lbs of muscle or no coach will ever put him on the ice for a face off
