Full disclosure....I have Necas as our #1 prospect....and I don't think I'm wrong (and not in a 40 point Chris Terry kind of way).

I'd say I agree. Necas has more experience at a higher level, and has shown he can hold his own, plain and simple. Svechnikov may come in and blow the doors off PNC arena, but if you're making an estimated guess, Necas is a clear #1 IMO.

Svechnikov is probably going to have a lower bar to clear, especially this season. As a goal scoring winger, he could blow the doors off simply by feasting on the top PP and being respectable on defense. Assuming Necas is a center here, he’s going to have a much sharper learning curve to navigate. He won’t be the top PP guy and he might not have much time on the second unit either, and most of the rest of the game involves facing off against the other team’s top scoring threat if they can target him successfully. He could be the better player and still have a much rougher go of it, for positional reasons alone.

If Necas is on the team there is a low chance he’s not on the 2nd PP unit. Are there 8 forwards more likely to get PP time than him?

Svechnikov

Ferland

It could happen.

What’s really tough to figure is what happens on the points. Hamilton and Faulk in two different units would make sense, but I think Faulk is gone. What then? RBA is a fan of Lavi, so having 4 forwards seems plausible in his PP units, but it’s tough to see any other defensemen as regulars on the PP. Then again, didn’t Lavi run 5 forwards at times?

Yeah, those are the two big factors in my mind. Do we deploy that high-priced defense on the PP, and do guys like Williams, Ferland, Zykov have a role on the PP? And also, are we going with Aho/Staal as our centers? If so, that puts Necas on the wing where playing time can be more ephemeral than at center.

I don’t think Necas is going to go the whole season without seeing PP time, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t think he’s going to be an automatic fixture right from the get-go, so the points might be a little slow in coming.

FWIW The Athletic posted their top 50 U-23 prospects list:
Wheeler: The Top 50 drafted NHL prospects ranking, 2018...

Svechnikov at #3 (disagree entirely with having Pettersson over him)
Necas at #9
Fox at #34
Bean, Foegele, Kuokkanen, Wallmark, McKeown all listed as HMs.
And I likely would have had Bean over a good segment of the bottom of that list.
Zykov having recently turned 23 was ineligible

I'm not sure what the construction of the power play units will be, but I cannot imagine a scenario where Valentin Zykov isn't on one of them, likely the 1st unit. Granted, AHL stats and all, but this is a guy who scored 17 of his 33 goals on the power play (leading the entire AHL). This is also a guy who's body is built to camp in front of the net. Add that to the fact that he has been in Raleigh working out for most of the Summer, and that's a guy I want parked in goalie's faces.

Not bad, not bad. Two in the top-10 is super promising.

Yeah, it would seem that he fulfills a role for which the only possible suitors are Staal and Ferland (apologies to McGinn), and we've come to realize that Staal is not be the answer that we hope for in that spot.

Ferland's effectiveness is obviously unproven, but he got PP time in CAL, and from the little evidence I've found, wasn't entirely a perimeter player in their PP.

It would seem Zykov has as much of a chance as anyone to claim that spot, if not having the inside track to it.

I think it's pretty exciting to see the level of depth we have in the system now. I'd be stunned if we weren't around the top 3 best prospect groups in the NHL. If we had any serious goalie prospects we'd probably be at the top or just behind Philly. Drafting and development are a big part of winning in the league now. Having a ton of good kids available to fill in for injuries as they happen, push middling NHL players for spots, and to have kids come in and be on the ELCs is great if we can get more high end players here. The foundation to be good for a long time is here. Now they just have to execute.

I believe in our youth and our senior team. It may not come together this season the way we want but I really believe we will be back in a major way very soon.

What is most impressive is the improvement in the prospect group in just two years. Middle-rounders like Foegele and Wallmark have shown real potential. Players from other organizations like Zykov, Saarela, and now Fox have risen. Finally, the last two first-rounders have Canes' fans convinced they will turn this organization around. It is realistic to think that 6-10 players who weren't in the NHL at the beginning of 2018 will be contributing this season and next.

Add this to the fact that we will have the youngest or one of the youngest NHL rosters in the league next year. Yes, part of that is because of Necas and Svech. So many core players are 26 or younger:

26: Skinner, Ferland, Martinook, Faulk, Mr. Azek
25: Rask, Hamilton
24: McGinn, Slavin, PDG
23: Turbo, Pesce
22: Fleury
21: Aho

And none of these guys are considered prospects. When you put it all together, I'd consider this the best young core in the entire NHL. (I'd consider the Avs to be pretty close but our defense is much more of a sure thing. Also the Sabres are close but I'm not sold on their D aside from Dahlin)
