The highest ceilings left are Tuulola (top 6 complementary forward) and McDonald (starting goaltender) with an HM to Ollas-Mattsson (2nd pair D) and Pribyl (no one knows).

I generally agree those are their ceilings. They all seem like long shots to me for the most part though. Which is why I would rank a 4th line guy like Hathaway over them at this point.

You can sign 4th line guys for vet min yearly. Heck look at Alex Chiasson, still looking for a job in the middle of his prime while being better than Hathaway as an NHLer and only a year older.

Guys who project to have higher ceilings, however long shot, have more value as players to develop, and as potential trade pieces. A 19 year old with a useful ceiling is more of a prospect than a 25 year old with a throwaway ceiling.

None of the guys left on the the list will be potential trade pieces, at least not as anything other than to balance contracts.

They will either make it as Flames or that'll be it. Save for maybe McDonald.

With that in mind I take into account which guys have the best chance of actually playing for the Flames, and at this point in the list its Hathaway in my opinion.

In 2014, Byron, Ferland, and Kulak were all still on the board at this point.

All would have more trade value right now than contract-balancers. Kulak, a year from now could be a highly coveted piece. Ferland IS a covetted piece. And Byron is a piece I covet.

None of these guys "surprised" past their original ceilings - they just always had higher ceilings than the Hanowskis and Breens that seemed more NHL-ready

Notice how none of them were trade chips? Byron is actually a perfect example because he was a throw in on the Regehr deal to balance contracts.

Byron was the prospect, he wasn't a throw in. Butler was the throw in if anyone was.

I disagree. Chris Butler was a young defensive defenceman, and Byron was a prospect thrown in that everyone assumed was an afterthought. If Butler was a throw-in, I doubt the Flames would have kept him for as long as they did.

I'm not sure either was a throw in. It was a classic 2 lesser assets for one larger one.

No one was really a throw in. From what I remember, the deal was originally Regehr for Byron+Butler but then Feaster wanted to include Kotalik to clear up even more cap space for that 9 year, 7M per offer to Brad Richards. The Sabres GM said the only way he'd take Kotalik is if either Byron was taken out or the Flames added a second round pick, to which Feaster obliged.

So, Feaster did value Byron a fair bit, at least to the point of a second round pick. And in hindsight, he was right.

The thing about Hathaway too is that he's not likely gonna be some typical 4th liner. He's fast and he hits everything in sight.

Okay, but are we going to try and argue that Byron was a valuable piece at the time of the deal? Also, my understanding was always that the 2nd was added so we could dump NHL legend Ales Kotalik. Because Flames ownership didn't want to pay him anymore money.

He was the piece I liked most tbh. 21 year old kid coming off a 26 goal and 53 point season (in 67 games) as a sophomore. He was also described as a "bulldog" by Sabres fans I spoke to around that time.

Linus "Second coming of Mikael Backlund" Lindstrom.

Just for background, Lindstrom played in the Swedish men's league this past season as an 18-year-old, and really impressed the coach with his 200-foot game. Here's a good write-up on his season: https://flamesnation.ca/2017/03/14/prospect-wrap-up-linus-lindstrom/

Seems like the guy is on the right track.

He is my next pick as well. Very intriguing prospect. Not sure how much offensive upside he really has, but I like him as well.
