Don't know why Butcher is dropping so far. Easily one of the top 13 most talented prospects. We could still sign him, just typical Chambers BS. Obviously have shown interest in college players.

It's not because of chambers but I think there's a real chance they won't sign Butcher, I think they are still deciding and haven't made up their minds like Chambers thinks. In a way it is true that unsigned guys tend to fall lower on these polls than signed guys. But after the top 10 there were all these D without much separating them, they really could have gone in any order.

I also think there's a real chance Butcher never gets a contract. He's just not a good fit with the new draft philosophy and team construction. I could maybe see him carve out a nice AHL career, but the Avs would probably rather give the playing time in the minors to one of the many other D with a chance at the big club. I think he has talent, and character to spare, but just doesn't have a future here.

I see Butcher as the Barrie replacement at the end of that contract. Barrie will price himself out, and Butcher will be ready for that role (OD/PP guy, but 3rd pair, not 2nd). He wont be the elite scorer, but he will be OK, and has a head start on being a bit better defensively.

He may be small, but he is just as big as Barrie, who was just proven to fit into the scheme here going forward. He was not far off a PPG pace as the #1D on the #2 NCAA team in the country last year. He may not be ready to step into an NHL spot just yet (and there is no room for him, even before recent UFA signings). But after another year at DU and a couple with SAR, I think he will be a good fit next to Meloche on the bottom pair and ready to slide up if needed. A solid 5D with PP time (you know, like Barrie is "supposed" to be). Melo would be the one moving up to 2nd pair upon Barrie's exit.

2020-21 D pairs:

Zads/EJ
Bigs/Melo
Butcher/Mironov-Boikov

To me this is a tossup between Butcher and Lindholm. I lean slightly towards Lindholm as he will have an impact on the organization over the next 3 seasons. It is unknown if Butcher will. I think Butcher has a higher ceiling, but he still needs to work on his skating.

I don't think any PMD is the Barrie replacement because they don't even draft that type. It will be Clurman in 4 years that replaces him :sarcasm: I don't know about what it says on paper but in person Butcher is like Hishon tiny.

I wouldn't take Elite Prospects' word on size. Butcher is listed at 5'10" 186lbs by DU... seeing him in person, the weight is probably close (I think he might be a touch heavier), but the height is probably an inch or so too tall.

I think Hishon in his last year or so here was listed at 5'10" 175lbs... so Barrie, Butcher, and Hishon are all in the same range.

Barrie might be 5'10 short but his frame isn't as slight as the other two.

Butcher hasn't put on a ton of muscle, but I think the frame is similar. There was a point where Butcher was over 200lbs and he could be again. IMO it hurts his game because his skating isn't good enough to play at 190. He needs to be a solid 180-185 to be most effective. Barrie is a good enough skater that he could probably play at 200 if he could build up enough... I don't think he has the frame to support that.

Barrie might be 5'10 short but his frame isn't as slight as the other two.

Barrie isn't exactly in tip top shape either though. 190 pounds with some fat on you and you're going to look a lot thicker than 190 pounds with more muscle.
