Began today. There have already been two named storms. The strongest of which, Hurricane Alex, formed way back in January peaking at 140 km/h. The last time a tropical storm formed in January was in 1978. Most recently, Tropical Storm Bonnie made landfall in Charleston, South Carolina on May 29th peaking at 75 km/h.

How expensive is hurricane insurance in those areas?

Depends on a lot of factors.

Proximity to coast. Closer you are, more likely you are to have damage, so the more you're insurance is going to cost.

Likelihood of your area getting hit. Gulf coast is going to be more expensive than the Atlantic coast in many cases (outside of Florida).

Depends on the type of damage, too - some may only cover flooding from storm surge and/or rain. Wind and hail damage are also common in hurricanes. Some even spawn tornadoes (albeit they're usually weak and short-lived).

Every insurance company is different, so there's really no way to say for sure what will be covered and the cost of it. Too many factors.

Current system in the Gulf has 0% chance of forming in two days, 30% in five days. Probably not going to turn into anything but some thunderstorms.

Third storm named. Tropical Storm Colin looks to be making landfall in Franklin County on the Florida panhandle with sustained winds of 85 km/h. The government of Canada has already issued a weather statement for Cape Breton and Newfoundland.
