Game Day Thread Sign-up

It's that time of year again! We're looking for posters who want to participate in creating Game Day Threads (GDT's) to give HFJets a place to discuss the game that day.

Not many rules, although there are a few official and unofficial ones: don't post until 12 midnight the day of the game, and follow the site rules regarding content, which includes not posting content of a political, religious, or sexual nature - dat's it!

This sign-up thread will ensure that there's no duplicated effort, and enable posters to grab games that they're interested in. Divisional rival game? Favourite O6 team coming to town? Looking for revenge against a particular opponent? Nab that game ahead of time to ensure you can express your thoughts via a GDT.

There are no 'standards' in terms of what needs to be created: we're only looking for your creativity and your sense of humour. It can be a text only GDT, it can be a Photoshop masterpiece, it can be a MS Paint GDT - whatever strikes your fancy. The most important part of a GDT is your participation. Please don't be intimidated by GDT's, and feel that you must meet some certain level of 'polish' in order to post one!

New this Year: Trophies!

We'll be tracking W/L/OT/SO results, just for fun. In addition, we may do fan voting at the end of the year, resulting in trophies for things such as: Most GDT's during the regular season, longest win streak, highest winning percentage, worst record of the season, best GDT of the season, funniest GDT, etc. We're looking for your input on these trophies - it should be something fun and in jest, or an acknowledgement of a positive nature.

Rules

• Explicitly state the game you want to sign up for: give a date and an opponent, so it's very clear
• First come, first served! If you want to bargain with someone over a particular game, either do it through the PM system, or bargain here. I hear vCash works well.
• If you claim a game and can't do the GDT for some reason, no big deal: just post in this thread that you can't do that game, and someone will take it over for you.
• Biggest rule: have fun! Put in hours, days, or minutes - it really doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it and give fellow fans a place to cheer for the Jets during the Game Day. Do what you can to help the HFJets community, and have a good time with it!

I would love to add my name to the list, but I'll see what amount of time I have available - between battling an illness and significant changes in Mrs. Monty's job, free or down time isn't as frequent as it once was.

I don't have the time to actually make a GDT for any game, but I can throw out ideas for those that have the time and photoshop skillz.

Obviously we have to have a halloween one again with the players dressed up. (Thorbz as a hockey player last year was priceless)

I had the idea someone should do a "carnival" one in the fall sometime with players having "carny" names or assigning Pavs as the "Juggler" or something lol and decorating the borders of the GDT with a carnival theme (including lettering). I don't know if anyone wants to make that happen, but its an idea.

I don't think many people have the time to make GDT's (I certainly don't - I usually finish mine up at or near midnight, or rush to get it done before heading to work in the morning). It's important to remember that GDT's don't have to be a work of art, they don't have to be filled with custom Photoshopped images, etc - when I do that, it's just me being OCD because I'm in a visual arts medium.

It's really just about providing a place for us to discuss the game. Anything beyond a "Game's at 8pm @ Rexall" is a bonus, but even "Game's at 8pm @ Rexall" would be fine!

Don't be afraid to give it a try!

MAKING A BASIC GDT:

Things you will need:

- Your Favorite Image Editor (I use paint, so no "I don't have photoshop" excuses. Even my Slam Jam GDT with Charles Barkley's face over every Jets Player's face was done 100% in paint.)

- Access to an Image upload site (I use imgur.)

Optional:

- A theme (many great GDT's don't have this)

- A creative spark

- Skill in photo editing

COMMON THINGS A GDT MIGHT HAVE:

TOM SERVO'S TOP TIPS!

1) Here is a free size template: http://i.imgur.com/PF5idVK.png I use this width for my GDT's.

2) If you're using Paint I would recommend using multiple windows and setting stuff up in one window, and then pasting it into another. save the Main image lots of times.

3) Right click on an online image - then click "copy image" you can now paste right into paint.

4) The Snipping tool is your friend: Or any screenshot tool. Too lazy to post the standings? Just snip them from NHL.com. To lazy to write up a Game preview? Snip away my fellow creators.

5) On that note: Helpful Websites: Obviously NHL.com/Winnipeg Jets official site, but if you want up to date roster info IllegalCurve/twitter is probably your best bet. For opposing lineups, lurking the opposition's boards seem to work for me.

6) Learn to embed. See these buttons?

You can use them to embed all kinds of things, from video's to NHL stuff, even tweets! (For YT - Use the video code. For Twitter - Use the tweet number. For NHL videos - use the video numbers.

7) Your info doesn't have to be 100% accurate, (esp. Line up wise) That is what the edit post button is for if someone corrects you, just edit your GDT and claim it was correct all along!

8) Speaking of HF board tools, you can preview a post, and it will not actually post! Right next to the submit thread button! Nice way to see how your GDT will actually look.

9) Have Questions? If you message any of the "mainstays" of GDT creation we'll be happy to help! (Well Gin has to because he's a mod, and I will as well. I assume everyone else will be cool) about fire safety - Rich Evans

10) (and Most important) Have Fun. It's your GDT, screw the rules and suggestions, make your GDT your GDT! (Except for Tip 11)

11) Make it a Bro Day Thread. Don't ask. Just do it. You should see the "Tag Post" right next to the title. Scroll all the way down and choose BDT: Bro Day Thread

Thanks for all that are signing up! Heading out to drive in TO rush hour traffic in 5mins, but I'll update the list of people that have asked for GDT's. I wanted to mention one more time, as this is important:

It becomes a bit of a scramble when a GDT breaks the rules listed in that quote, as we have to determine what to do with the GDT when everyone's looking to post in the thread, etc. Try to stay away from those three items listed above when you're assembling your GDT.

I wrote a Python script that "grabs" them from any of the teams from nhl.com - I can run it for you on the weekend, Derf. WPG - CGY, yes?

Yes - although I'd like to edit them, and have them available for other games in the future. Are they all on the NHL.com team pages? If so I can just do it manually...

Yeah, the roster pages for each team is where I grab them from - they're 150x150 in size. It's not a huge deal to run the script, but it's up to you. Once run, I end up with a directory full of the jpg files for each team. Ended up writing the script, as it takes quite a while to jump to each player page and back to get the individual images.
