Supposedly the list below comes from Scotty Bowman... Anyways, for those of you who haven't heard about it, it is supposedly the most important pieces for a cup contender. The link at the bottom of the page isn't great, but it provides a little bit more. Thought it would be interesting to try to see how the Caps current roster compares. For a point of reference, I listed last years Blackhawks below.

I don't have time to type out every other teams rosters, but I'd be interested to see if you limited your view of any team to these 7 positions, whether or not there is any team you would pick over the Caps this year.

1. #1 all star center Backstrom
2. #2 all star center Kuznetsov
3. Top power forward Ovechkin
4. Specialist/Utility Player/Agitator/Shutdown center
5. All star offensive d-man Carlson (or maybe Niskanen)
6. Top shutdown d-man Alzner (maybe Niskanen?)
7. All star goalie Holtby

As an Example, last years Blackhawks:

1. #1 all star center Toews
2. #2 all star center Richards
3. Top power forward Hossa (Kane doesn't fit one of the categories here, but is clearly a better player)
4. Specialist/Utility Player/Agitator/Shutdown center Shaw
5. All star offensive d-man Keith
6. Top shutdown d-man Seabrook
7. All star goalie Crawford

I feel the concept is silly. You could take any team and they'd fit the profile if you squinted hard enough. BCF must be squinting pretty hard to call Brown a top player or Williams a power forward.

Not to mention the player, who in my opinion is the player most responsible for Chicago's cups is nowhere on this 7 player profile; Patrick Kane.

You need to be good at every position to win. Period.

So almost half your team needs to be All Stars. Brilliant.

Well, I would assume that the point is that the more of these that you can "Check Off" the more likely you are to win the cup. In addition, you could use it as a criteria for comparing two teams. Of course, more quality players = better team, but IF this was the way that Bowman approached team building, he has seen a lot of success.....
