I get the feeling the forward lines will look something like this:

Drouin - Petan - Mantha
Shinkaruk - Horvat - S. Reinhart
Rychel - Laughton - Lazar
Hudon - Gauthier - Girard
McDavid

Fair enough! I do think you ignore stuff like mental toughness at your peril, though. If it wasn't a factor then you wouldn't see a guy like Fleury post sparkling save percentages throughout the regular season only to have his performance drop substantially in the playoffs.

It's absolutely a good point that assessing mental toughness is difficult for outside observers. However, I'd argue that it's not nearly as difficult for decision makers. We (i.e. fans) may not put players on the couch, but coaches, scouts, and GMs certainly do. They interview the players regularly and have sports psychologists provide research-backed diagnoses and treatments to improve mental performance under pressure. It's not some pie-in-the-sky thing. When you have scout after scout praising Fucale for his exceptional calmness in net it means something, IMO.

Anyway, I imagine we're going agree to disagree on this, so I won't press the issue - for everyone's sake :P

---

I enjoyed TSN's WJC preview, though it was understandably thin on news given where we are in the process. I'm really excited to see what selection camp looks like this year compared to years previous given the massive changes in the selection process.

Fleury doesn't have sparkling regular season save percentage...

Goalies tend to perform in playoffs relative to regular season as you would expect given the smaller sample size so added variance...

Playoff%20saves.png

The line is where you should expect 95% players to fall in between if there is no real difference.

Besides, I didn't say you should ignore mental toughness. I'm just saying you have no idea what is mental toughness and what is just you putting a narrative to random changes that happen with small sample size. I bet even GMs and scouts make that mistake at times (not saying always, but no where near never).

Just caught the TSN preview show.. Duthie made a comment re: finish 1st. in your group and it's a bye to the 1/2 final. That in fact has been changed this year. There will be 4 1/4 final games on the 2nd.

Although I do think you should get a bye if you win your group, I really can't complain as it means getting a bonus game to watch.

Unbelieveable how they can go a whole "World Junior pre-tournament show" and only mention Mantha once, when they mentioned him with "one dimensional - only offense"... geeze, he's the most dominant scorer on that team together with Drouin...

This is looking like one of the most high octane scoring teams we have had in years. I can't wait to watch Mantha and Drouin play together..and please put McDavid with them for a game...I hope to see that.

Could someone explain me the Gauthier selection plz? :dunno:

Pretty clear why he's there.

Big, fast, smart and a physical player that can win faceoffs, block shots, plays a great cycle/board game. He's probably one of the best players there that can do all that.

This isn't an all-star game, you need some of those players.

With that said, there will be one or two cuts so perhaps he'll be one of them. Sutter seems to be pretty high on him though so we'll see.

I dont think so, Hudon will probably have a more defensively oriented role..

The biggest asset with hudon in a tournament like this is that he can excell in any situation aside hitting.

his excellent hockey IQ will allow him to be a dominant force defensively if asked (which I believe will be the case starting the tournament) covering and shutting down opposite best players.

But if an injury occurs, or someone underperform, you put him in the top 6 easily and he can become a force offensively by positioning and great vision. He will adapt to any situation.

too bad this weekend is probably the last time I see him play here, but I hope he succeeds at every level he goes.

Yeah mentioning Petan with Drouin as the guy who will drive the offense and the only thing they mention is almost negative about Mantha. I'm willing to bet he'll be on the top line with Drouin and the PP. Petan is on a way better team, less of a goal scorer and still being outscored by Mantha. I do think Petan will factor big time into the team not trying to put him down just fail to see why hes mentioned as a guy who will drive the offense and Mantha is a guy who might be in the bottom 6 to provide some scoring cause hes one dimensional

I was amused by that too. The Drouin - Petan - Mantha line (make it happen, Sutter) is going to be scaaaaaary good.

Talk about three guys who have no problem putting up points. That line would be down right scary.

I'd swap Rychel and Hudon, but those lines look pretty close to what could end up happening.

I think this video shows what Gauthier offers. Perfect as a fourth line center in an international tournament. Defensive shut-down specialist that isn't going to take a lot of penalties. Very high Defensive IQ.
