About the only thing that seems set in stone is this:

Tlusty // Eric // Semin
??? // Jordan // ???
??? // ??? // ???
??? // ??? // ???

Ruutu seems likely to be on the 2nd line, but who knows for sure. Skinner was experimented with at 3C, but could play wing to Lindholm or with Jordan. Fill in the rest with Dalpe, Nash, Boychuk, Westgarth, Bowman, Blanchard, Welsh, Dwyer. Maybe Morrow.

The defense should be Pitkanen, Gleason, Sekara, Komisarek, Faulk, Harrison in some order, with either Bellemore or Murphy being the #7. Or Hainsey could change things.

The only certainty is that Ward will start and Khudobin will back him up.

Yeah. It's really not that easy to predict this roster. A rough skeleton would be:

Tlusty-EStaal-Semin
Ruutu-JStaal-?????
?????-Lindholm-Skinner
Westgarth-Nash-Dwyer
Blanchard

Those ?????'s could end up being filled by some combination of Gerbe, Dalpe, Bowman, Palushaj, Boychuk, or even a free agent.

My defense would be

Pitkanen-Faulk
Gleason-Sekera
Harrison-Komisarek
Bellemore

Ward
Khudobin

No, he's AHL-eligible this year. The likelihood he makes/doesn't make it will depend on if JR makes any other moves, the health of Pitkanen, the cap situation, how Murphy looks, and how the PP looks.

If Murphy is tabbed as #7, I'd rather him be in Charlotte getting regular minutes and Bellemore be kept as the #7 in Raleigh. But should a defenseman miss extended time, Murphy would be the one I'd insert into the lineup.

If Murphy doesn't make the Canes, he has to go back to junior, correct?

If that's the case, what's the likelyhood that he makes the roster?
No, he's eligible for the AHL. If we carry or play 7 d-men, he has a good chance to make the NHL roster unless we sign Hainsey or another d-man. But I think if he's not playing he'll eventually be sent down to the AHL.

This was almost word-for-word what I was getting ready to say. Murphy needs to be getting minutes somewhere, and I would rather see him dominate the AHL than struggle in the NHL. At least early in the season, to get his feet wet.

I'd agree with that. Murphy looked promising but a little uncomfortable in his little callup last season. Bellemore's had a little more experience and is MUCH closer to his ceiling, I'd have no problem with him as a 7th dman stepping in. He really was solid last year, I think a team with a 7D like that is in OK shape. Hit like a tank, didn't seem to put himself out of position too often, seemed to have a "step in and don't screw up in my limited minutes" mindset, which is perfect for a 7D, but still got more comfortable as the year went on.

I like the guy. Murphy's going to dominate or become a Bergeron-type player, so let him dominate the AHL to work on some things. Bellemore is MORE than capable of being a 7D. He's probably not getting much better, so going out of your way to find him ice time isn't a problem like it would be with Murphy.

I too wouldn't mind seeing Murphy in the AHL getting a lot of minutes and working on his game. I'm guessing it won't be too long before the Canes need someone to play top 6 min. due to injuries though. In addition to Pitkanen, Faulk has missed some time in his two season due to injuries, Harrison and Sekera also has typically missed about 10+ / season as well.

Just curious, why do you think that Murphy's either going to dominate or be a Bergeron-type player? I honestly will be surprised if he were ever to dominate, but I don't see it as an either / or type of scenario.

Another player I wouldn't discount is Matt Corrente. His signing went pretty under the radar around here, but he would be a perfect candidate for filling the 13th forward or 7th defender slot with his positional versatility.

Despite the fact that Bellemore had a decent showing in his 8 game audition, he was about 10th or 11th on our depth chart prior to last season. Corrente almost certainly would have slotted higher had he been here. That will be a camp battle to watch. Two similar players stylistically but I think Corrente has a bit more jam and more piss and vinegar.

If it comes down to Carolina wanting both Corrente and Bellemore to get more seasoning in the AHL, we might see Mark Flood as the 7th defender. More likely we're talking about defenders 7, 8, and 9 here in random order. If we need a more offensive option then Flood will be the guy. Something like the Rodney to the Carson/Borer connection.

Right now, if I had to fill out all the lineups and special teams, I'd go with

Tlusty-E. Staal-Semin
Skinner-J. Staal-Ruutu
Gerbe-Lindholm-Dwyer
Palushaj-Nash-Bowman
Westgarth

Faulk-Pitkanen
Gleason-Sekera
Harrison-Komisarek

Ward Khudobin

PP 1
Tlusty-E. Staal-Skinner
Semin-Pitkanen

PP 2
Ruutu-J. Staal-Lindholm?
Faulk-Sekera

PK 1
J. Staal-Dwyer
Gleason-Faulk

PK 2
E. Staal-Semin/Ruutu
Sekera-Komisarek

PK 3
Nash or whichever Staal is most rested-Semin/Ruutu
Harrison-Pitkanen

So this looks decent, but I still think we really need to sign either Morrow or Raymond to help fill out our forward lines, and either of them could play on both special teams units.

I'd agree with that. Murphy looked promising but a little uncomfortable in his little callup last season.

We also threw him right into the fire with 20 minutes a game because of the injuries. You're a guy being called up from junior, playing in your first NHL games, and you're being counted on for serious minutes against real competition?

His first NHL game ever, he played 23:51. His second, 25:27 (and they say the Canes don't give young players real opportunities). 16:15 and 18:42 the next two bring the average down a little, but if, in your first and second games in the NHL, you're playing those kinds of minutes against real competition, looking promising but a little uncomfortable is jaw droppingly outstanding. How many D prospects come in from junior and can take that kind of a role without missing much of a beat?

I think he'll make the team, and play a real role. Bottom pairing to start the season, but I also think he has a real chance of moving up.

My prediction would be:
Pitkanen-Faulk
Gleason-Sekera
Harrison-Murphy
Komisarek
