Was a budding star in early 80's who emerged as ace of Sox staff briefly in 1982 and went on to win 1983 AL Cy Young with the "Winning Ugly" White Sox

Brought to Chicago as the main piece back in Bucky Dent deal a poor showing in 1984 led to his trade to Padres in deal that brought SS Ozzie Guillen to White Sox

Hoyt regained his form in 1985 with an allstar year for Padres but off the field drug issues as well as a rotator cuff injury would end see his 1986 a dismal failure

In the offseason of 1986, he was arrested with 500 pills at US/Mexico border leading and was jailed for 45 days then suspended by Pete Ueberroth and released by Padres. He was set to be given another shot in Chicago for 1988 season after coming off suspension and regaining health from rotator cuff injury but was again arrested for drugs and was released by White Sox then sent to Federal Prison for a year for violating probation terms from his 1986 arrest

One of those careers that in short time saw rise to stardom before falling apart as a result of off field issues

Regarded as likeable guy by teammates and fans he kept a relatively low profile occasionally popping up at events celebrating team or being seen here or there around game every now and then
