I turn 34 on Wednesday. Why did the gods conspire to have us play Carolina the day before

I could've made GDT's for both games on both boards and cheer for both teams at the same time on my birthday

So it's fine to lose a battle, then kick it backwards to the other team who gets it in stride?

Losing battles when you're outnumbered along the boards happens. His kicking it only allowed them to get it in stride because Brodin didn't hold his own position.

Brodin holds his position and Nino actually ends up kicking the puck to him and the defense never gets it in stride.
