I like Fox as a player but I don't like the precedent of refusing to sign with the team that drafted you.
I feel the exact opposite. I much prefer the European system where players get to sign where they want. I really don't like the whole draft system. Way cooler to let people play where they actually want to play, builds true loyalty and increases passion. The whole salary capped franchise system is just so lame and only serves the owners making money off of it.

I'm a Long Island kid who was at Cornell for three of the years that Fox was at Harvard. (For those who don't know, it's one of the biggest rivalries in college hockey, and the games at Cornell's Lynah Rink are legendary).

I didn't actually follow college hockey--I just went to the games with friends--so I didn't know who Fox was at the time. Knowing that I missed multiple opportunities to watch Fox before he became a superstar is yet another reason I'll never forgive myself for not putting the effort in to getting tickets to a Harvard/Cornell game.

Rich kid from a rich family grows up entitled. Hard to cheer for him tbh, especially writing these articles.
Is Fox's family actually rich? I haven't heard anything about that--especially compared to seemingly endless number of pro-hockey sons coming into the league nowadays.
Also, this "hometown gratitude" article is pretty standard for The Athletic. I don't blame Flames fans for disliking the player and the article, but I don't get what Fox has done to earn hate from fans outside of Calgary.

I read it, and I regret wasting my time doing so. Fluff from start to end.

It's an article about New York written solely for people from New York.
Yeah I don't see the point of it. Other fans (especially CGY and CAR fans, but also likely NJ and NYI fans) will read it and now use it as an excuse to hate him even more. NYR fans already loved him. This article would be fine if written by someone from Columbus or Winnipeg, but when it comes to New York, there really is no point to it.

Me too, I wish the same 3-4 teams would always be packed!

I understand when you don't want to commit a team that drafted. It's not totally unusual. But to deny a 2nd team that traded for you? That's a whole nother issue.

Fox not rejected Calgary, but also Carolina. He's a great player of course but I don't like him that much.

Not a big deal from a Canes POV. We knew when we got his rights that he was highly unlikely to sign, but hey... you don't hit home runs if you don't swing the bat. We got a satisfactory return for his rights, so there's not much if any resentment from our corner.

That being said, it's a bit weird for him to write an article about how he's living his dream, but also says he didn't think about it as a kid, and also doesn't acknowledge the machinations that got him to this point. There's a certain lack of self-awareness in portraying this to the public as something he just kind of fell into.

Except that isn't at all what would happen. Nearly every team has had their day in the sun for drawing players for various reasons.
Rangers, Leafs, Habs, Bruins, Hawks for obvious reasons.
Minnesota and Detroit have drawn plenty of hometown kids.
Pittsburgh, Washington, Carolina, Dallas, Vegas, Tampa, and Nashville have attracted players because they are always competitive.
Buffalo and the rest of the Canadian teams would have tons of hometown kids who would love to play for them if they actually were competitive.
Florida, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Jose are known destination franchises.
